CHANGE is a roguelike survival simulator about being homeless. Beg for cash, get food, and stay alive. I wanted to make a game around this idea for a little while, and I decided to have it all on the same screen with passer's by coming to you. It works!
UPDATE: Right now the web version isn't working, i'll let you know when it's fixed. in the meantime, download! :D
This is my third time in Ludum Dare, so happy to be back. :D
Click on people to beg money from them. Press ESC to quit.
NOTE: Unity games no longer work in chrome for those playing the web version. D:
This game was made in UNITY.
All art was made in GIMP.
Music created in GARAGEBAND.
Sound effects created in CFXR. (Of course).
The only library I used for this before starting is the TYPEWRITER library seen in the source code.

Overall I like the concept. However you have one person (though understandable). And it seems more like a relaxed game than anything. It would be better with a bit more interactivity than sit and click on walking by persons
Yeah, I wanted to add more than the clicking and random events at the end of the day, but you know, time constraints. :)
Wow, Depressing. That doesn't make it bad, this is a good "Game". It covers a very real social issue. Bravo to you for making this. Oh and the game is very polished, everything worked well.
This game doesn't seem to get past the title screen for me. Chrome on Windows 7. What do I click on or press to start it?
Ah yeah, the web version is broken, I'm afraid, so right now its download only. its a tiny download though. :)
Interesting. Sometimes homeless are invisible people for most of us.
Ummm... got me to the heart. Impressive. Really. (although where is the dog? starved in day 4 (i did want to buy the dog!!!)
Thanks guys! At the end of each day random events happen, and the dog appearing is one of those events. It's all about luck!
Wow, being homeless is hard work.
Very well done! The music really sets the mood here.
Excellent experience! The graphics remind me of The Sims for Game Boy Advance. The music is so very fitting, and the issue at hand is very well approached. Overall, the game has a very good and distinct style.
Thank you for making this.
I really liked the mood/production values. Good job, very interesting use of the theme.
Conceptually strong, but mechanically weak, unfortunately. It would have been good to have more intrigue in choices - I understand that desperation and choicelessness is part of the art of the concept, but even a beggar has choices - do you pester the same people 10 times? Would you get socked if you do? Who should you beg? Based on their looks?
So I really applaud the idea but the execution is lacking. Hope to see more Papers Please type stuff! :)
Hey tuism,
Yeah I agree, I wanted to do more things, but didn't have enough time. Maybe if I take this prototype further more stuff can happen. :)
Played for quite a long time actually. It really gets you...
I didn't get the dog :(
I got mugged :(
Very interesting game with a very immersive mood to it. I love the audio. A little anoying that you can't click on persons going behind an another person. Also could be a little more eventful, but overall a good game.
Mood works really well, played two times (because I didn't get the dog the first time) and have to agree that it would have been even better if there was some sort of choice as to from which people I beg (or a day running a bit faster) or some other mechanic that makes begging a bit more interactive. Loved the choices with random consequences and how some comments affect your mood.
There's no good place to be homeless, but the people in this city seem to be a lot more ... humane than many places I've seen. Everyone you ask for money at least acknowledges you, even if they don't give anything.
Ah that's a good point, I should have had some people just ignore you...
This is really touching but also entrentaining, I found the dog, yes! I hope there are more "friends" :D
Amazing music! Reminded me of Through The Dragon's Eye (not the theme tune). A really promising start to something that could be really good.
We made a video on your game! Check it out:

It was by far the longest we've played an LD game, and it didn't disappoint
I like how you use this as a way of addressing social issues. Good job!
That made me feel a bit... not a bad thing though. Good job! Thanks.
You certainly captured the mood - not pleasant. There didnt't seem to be much variety in gameplay and I couldn't figure out how to spend cash. The graphical style was quite neat, I don't think I've seen many games do that before. Music fit the mood, but was overly simple.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
Interesting art and audio style. Love the dog.
