Ludum Dare 31 — December 5th-8th, 2014 — Theme: Entire Game on One Screen

Untitled #31

by f7f5 - Compo Entry

** :( ** - If possible, play my Game using a recent version of Chrome or IE 11 (I don't have access to earlier versions of IE). It works fine on FireFox, but the map may flicker a bit. On Safari the sounds don't stop. I'll try to fix these bugs asap.

The game may take some time to load. Please wait :)

So, my take on the theme was to fit a big map on one screen and use a zoom lens
to enlarge the area around the player. The radius and fade effect of the lens are
used to convey information about the player's health.

The goal is to collect you personal objects (keys, wallet, etc...) that you lost earlier
around the playing area and return safely to the white square near the starting point
(that's your home, in case you forgot). Avoid the crazy wildlife. You can run in short
sprints if needed, and hide in the dark green squares.

Software used to build this game:
ImpactJS
Chrome, Firefox (and Safari, IE)
Kate
Audacity
jcgMusic
ffmpeg
timidity
Pinta
Inkscape

All sounds recorded on sunday, Dec 7th, using my faithful OnePlus One and the miidio Recorder app.

I couldn't move with WASD. Fun game, even though I died from the duck about 100 times.

Nice game ,like the zoom effect. The Instructions could be a bit more specific, as well as some better graphics :)

Try make a name even if it is bad. Also nice idea, the zoom effect helped as I'm sure it be hard to play without it.

Hi there. Like the minimal magnifier map presentation. Killed by dog/red square a couple times. Might need to be a bit easier to run away, is quite hard straight from the off, I think.

The game was interesting. Though, there wasn't a lot of information on what things were and the blind area around the character wasn't the most intuitive.

The visual setup was quite interesting, and the different types of creatures and sound effects were cool.

Cool aesthetic, also super hard, I died many times before I had to throw in the towel.

Nice game!
I like the way you see the place where you are, with the lens.
I'd like to notify to you that the game doesn't work with wasd, but only with arrow keys.

On IE11, the sound doesn't stop neither.
The lens effect if nicely done, but it hides a big part of the screen, forcing you to go away to see what's under.
I didn't manage to understand what every color means.

Quite liked the zoomed in effect.
There was some bugs with the dog sound.

The dogs could be a bit more forgiving, once they get you once you are done. Never managed to make a comeback from that.

Cool concept, and controls just fine. A bit hard to figure out how well you're doing at any one time.

I like the magnifying idea but some times the screen outside of it would flicker black.

Absolutely love the zoom part of it. I've seen a few whole dungeon on one screen entries and they could all do well with your zoom. I get the point of the game, but it was difficult to play without any graphics. There were things everywhere and having them all as boxes made it confusing. Anyway, controls seemed solid and overall it made for a fun couple of minutes.

Interesting. The sounds were kind of funny, and the map, while kind of disorientating, was also really helpful. I liked it! Nice job :D

Nice idea, liked the magnifying vision. Game was a bit hard though. Not sure if placeholder graphics was the intentional style either. Still, not a bad game. :)

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
