Snowman Survival

by CoderDozer - Compo Entry

This is a web based survival game that takes place in the confines of the screen area.

The player must avoid the evil snow peoples attempts to hit our hero with snowballs that may look a bit more yellow than I comfortable with for a snowball which causes health loss.

The player uses A and D to turn and W to move forward. They can fire an arrow at the snow persons by pressing the space bar.

The player can regain health by foraging through trees by simply moving close to a tree containing fruit. This also adds wood to the inventory. They can also collect stone which can be used to craft more arrows (1 W + 2 S = 1 A).

Arrow pick ups are also available so watch out for those.

Lots of stuff I would like to improve on here, probably including removing the automatic item chop/mine/collection which causes the player to be stuck in place until the operation completes. I would replace with a manual operation but with time constraints I'm prepared to leave as is and work on after the compo as a personal project. Also content regeneration would be nice.

Thanks for viewing, would appreciate the vote and/or comment and will do best to return the favor.

I actually really like the concept for this game. It's getting somewhere, but as it stands it is nearly impossible to get anywhere since crafting takes so long and snowmen take multiple hits to kill.

Oh wow! So hard! So many snowmen coming after you!
Died after a minute!

Recollecting takes so long and gives you so less :)

I like the concept, difficulty is ramps up pretty fast. I found it really hard to dodge, it would be nice if you could move with the keyboard and aim with the mouse. I liked it, good job.

Really nice idea! Collecting takes a bit and it's hard to survive. I like it!

This game needs a bit of balance and polish. The character would get stuck in a gathering action, and I was a sitting duck with no way to cancel to dodge the oncoming attacks. It also seemed a bit excessive that the snowmen and their attacks could go through walls. A weak, unlimited attack would have made this much better, but as it stands, you can't get enough ammo to kill more than one or two without just getting destroyed.

Nice idea, but controls are little tricky, it would be better that you made it strafe left and right instead rotation, and made it rotate to mouse

I can feel the inspiration from the snowman theme :D

A fairly simple game mechanic, but apart from collision checking (this felt quite broken) it played alright. Really not sure why I was allowed to walk outside of the room.
The crafting mechanic was pretty neat, and the music was half decent, so good job on that. I wasn't keen on the aesthetic, but top-down is pretty hard to do right.

I am not sure how exactly but the keyboard based controls could be more "friendly" :)

Extra points for including the Snowman (another theme candidate for this LD) into your game :D Everybody loves snowmen right? :)

Hi there. Nice idea to craft the arrows. Found it took too long. The collision at trees seemed to be a bit ragged - maybe on sprite not shape ? Like the plinky-plonky sound. Good job!

Very hard game, but I liked it. I really like the music in this, and I agree with you that the locking onto resources is a bit annoying, but that was definatly my biggest concern. Maybe try letting the arrow pass though the snowmen so that a well placed shot can take out two or three (you could always limit the number it can pass through). Good work on this one!

I know limited time makes stuff difficult, but if you continue working on this:

* A win condition would be nice.
* Using mouse to steer instead of A and D would be nice.
* The crafting did not seem to work -- even with 3 stone and 3 wood, no more arrows appeared in my inventory unless I grabbed an arrow pickup.
* Snowmen and their attacks should be blocked by obstacles.
* As you mention, you should not be locked in place from touching a tree. Even making the mining instant would make it more fun.

Nice little game, was made a little difficult by the auto-harvesting and movement. I also couldn't find any way to restart the game after a loss without refreshing the entire page.

For controls, I think WASD to move and mouse to fire/harvest is the usual control scheme for a topdown game. I also think the bullets/arrows are too small and slow. If you make the game a little more fast-paced it would be even more fun to play.

Nonetheless I like the crafting idea, really cool concept. Keep it up!

Controlls a bit hard. It'll be much easier to shift to direction instead of rotate and accelerate.

This could be quite cool but I think the controls detract from the fun.
But I can see this becoming a really fun game.

Had sometimes the problem that I wanted to run away from the snowman and then accidentally collected some stone or wood and got killed because of that. Maybe a key to start the collecting would be nice.

But your game is fun nonetheless. Well done.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
