Ice Fishing Derby is inspired by David Crane's Fishing Derby for the Atari 2600 (where the entire game was played on one screen--there wasn't even a title!) My goal was also to make a retro-style game.
This game is a bit more complicated, however. You're ice fishing, so you have to cut holes in the ice, and you can use bait to attract fish.
Each fish is worth $1 to $3. In addition to being your score, you can use this to buy various types of bait. Each bait has different properties: some attract fish at greater distances, some keep fish interested longer, and some are less likely to be lost once you reel in a fish.
MOVING AROUND
Use the arrow keys to move your fisherman. Press Ctrl to make a hole in the ice.
FISHING
When over a hole in the ice, press the arrow keys to move your line up and down. Press Ctrl to reel in, hooking any attached fish in the process.
BUYING BAIT
To buy bait, move to the far right side of the screen. Use the up and down arrow keys to select bait, Ctrl to buy, or the left arrow key to leave the shop.

The only thing I would change with this game, is adding more types of fish, possibly rare fish that get you more moneys
Haha really cool ! Nevertheless, If I have to improve something; it's difficult to know if the fishes are currently biting or not. Maybe a little music(jaws:))?
Nice, very polished simple.
For the longest time I was fishing without bait and wondering why I was not catching anything. Almost gave up on it until I accidentally moved too far to the right.
It took me a while to figure out that I needed to buy bait, but once I did I really enjoyed it! Fantastic graphics as well. I'd love to see an updated version with more types of fish.
clever take on the theme! The movements a little cumbersome, but I understand where you're coming from. It's a little unclear at first that you need to buy bait. Maybe some cheap freebee bait at the start would've helped. The clues that the fish is hooked isn't immediately intuitive but I got the hang of it quick. would play again, good job!
Nice job referencing that retro style. I love the old school sound effects, especially when you reel in. T'was lots of fun.
Really polished game! It's also nice and simple, I enjoyed playing it, great job. :D
It's a fun little game. The minnow bait is OP. I think I caught 5 fish at once with it.
It would be cool to see more fish types, rod types, etc. Heck, you could really pack this game out with some more fun stuff, but then that requires more than just 48 hours. Nicely done
Hi there. Like the game, nice retro feel. At last a generous fishing game... I caught quite a bit, like the sounds as well as pixels. Good job!
Really nice game - good art and nice gameplay. The music works, but would have loved another hipster acoustic guitar riff - perfect for the long nights ice fisihing!
Simple and fun! Cool retro graphics and sounds. Some feedback on fish that caught bait would be nice.
I was attracted to this by the gfx - nice retro style! Like a few others I didn't notice the bait thing at first so maybe something as simple as a flashing arrow over the bait-house for when the player fishes without any?
Good stuff!
This is in my top 3 for this LD. It's incredible what was completed in a weekend here.
I really liked the overall style of this game, and it's quite relaxing to play, great work!
I really like your use of the theme for this game! The retro graphics and audio worked nicely, and I felt the gameplay meshed well with that!
A few minor things to potentially fix, when you reset your game the bait doesn't dissapear from the little window, and it's a bit too easy to accidentally buy doughballs at the bait shop.
Apart from that, this game was really cool!
Exceedingly pleasant! Nice graphics and happy, enjoyable music.
This was a decent little arcade game. You took a lot of inspiration from the 80s arcades on this one, but I think you may have taken a bit too much. Much like those old arcade games, the gameplay was very flat and uninteresting. It was just a matter of pressing up and down, there wasn't really any conflict or tension driving the gameplay. It's a good start to something, and I could see this mechanic working in a game like mother load where your goal is to fish up a whale or something. As it is right now, it's not bad, it just feels like an unfinished thought.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
Incredible game man!
