Crowns

by Geti - Jam Entry

Heads up this is a board game for 2 players - I'll hopefully get to coding an AI for it at some point, but for best results play it with a friend or enemy.

The readme has a description of the cards, which you may find useful (particularly for the buffs)

CROWNS
========================================================
Crowns was created in a weekend by Max "Geti" Cahill
for Ludum Dare #31, in December 2014

email: 1bardesign@gmail.com
twitter: @1bardesign
notable: kag2d.com

========================================================
To play, run PlayCrowns.bat
========================================================

========================================================
Rules:

Each player has a deck of cards
Each player has an open hand of 4 cards

Players each place 1 card onto the board,
and then the game advances one step.

When a player's deck runs out, their
discard pile (except any discarded crowns)
are shuffled and used as a new deck.

The game continues until one or both players
are out of crowns.

========================================================
Pieces

Crown - protect these!

Pawn - advances one step each turn
- dies upon taking any piece

Wall - doesn't move, provides simple
protection from pawns

Tower - attacks 2 squares ahead
- doesn't move

Farm - lets you draw an extra card
each turn

Flag - lets you use an extra card
each turn

Sword - lets you use all your cards
in one turn

Shield - prevents enemies from moving
or attacking this turn

Siege Engine - attacks 3 squares ahead
- only attacks if not blocked
- moves forward if cant attack
- dies if it hits an obstacle

Bomb - kills whatever it's placed
on top of
- can be used to clear walls
and flags tactically

Not my type of game.

So, this is why KAG updates take so long. :D
It's fun, once you wrap your head around the rules. Some AI would be great, as it's really hard to find another human being willing to play board game on a PC. :D

Its a good prototype for a real board game. It needs some more gfx and a better presentation, but I like games to play with friends. Nice !

@rzuf - haha, I don't work on KAG on the weekends anyway :) Hopefully an update is just around the corner, but as you will have read there have been build server issues.

@sharp911 - sorry to hear that, thanks for commenting

@psychomonster @dieblume86 - I wanted to get some particle spam in there but ended up focusing on the sound and gameplay, smooth transitions of cards, etc rather than making it as pretty as I'd usually fuss about :)

Like for not using pre-made game engines

Cool. good foundation for something fun. An animated battle chess type thing would be cool.

As rzuf said, it was hard for me to get into it cause it is hard to find someone else then get them up to speed. AI would be good, I like the ideas.

If there was any audio I did´nt hear it.

@deyteris_team - nothing like coding some containers on day 1 ;) first ld in pure C for me.

@crushenator - yeah it'd be fun to add some more types of cards, was thinking something that could attack sideways

@2bit - understandable, that was a concern for me but I didn't want to half-ass the opponent.

@skonkan - interesting, its using SDL's audio so should work ok with just about anything you throw at it :/

Nice foundation for a board game!

it lacks some graphic work though

Fun card game and think the simple design with the blue and red works. Liked that you got the smooth card transitions happening and hopefully you'll get sometime to add the AI in later.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
