Super Snow Girl

by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou - Jam Entry

Note: tx everyone for the kind comments. I don't mind that it's unfinished, please don't assume I wanted to finish it.

Help SnowGirl, a snow golem back from the dead, reunite with her true love.

Arrows - move
A - jump
S - punch
1 - undermine attack
2 - avalanche attack

Not done obviously. Enemies spawn endlessly. Their attacks don't register. You can't die.
But it's a proof of concept I guess.

Photoshop CS5, construct2, FLstudio. Did all music, graphics, animation and coding (such as it is :P )
Had LOADS of fun working on this. Hope you dig

until next time
Christina ( @castpixel )

:3 I hope you'll develop a more advanced game based on this concept. And as always, the art is adorable!

It's really sad you couldn't finish your entry, the art is super good, and the chara design is great :)
And to be honest I like the fact that your story involves women in a more mature way than the traditional bimbo cliché. That's a nice change, thank you :)

Seems like with a bit of polish and obviously completing it, could be a pretty solid beat-em-up. Art style reminds me a lot of the scott pilgrim side scroller game. Good work!

Too bad you didn't complete it. What I tested I loved it :) reminds me of Scott Pilgrim vs The World + Steven Universe.

Dec 10, 2014 @ 2:26am

The "undermine attack" is nice. Cool faux-3D effect in the cutscene as well.

Unfortunate that it's unfinished... but looks good so far.

Dec 10, 2014 @ 2:28am

Gosh, I love the art direction for this... and the depicted relationship ;3. Really good character design and I actually liked the single-frame animation for the punches, since they seemed to provide some characterization. The one thing I'd say other than the obvious "complete the game!! I want more snow ladies!!" is that the coin sound is tuned a bit too loud relative to all of the other SFX and music. An audio retuning would help the feel of the experience as it is right now a lot.

Thank you for the game!

Very, very cool artwork! It's a shame you couldn't make it into a game, but I really love what you've got here so far! The diving into the snow thing kinda reminds me of the upcoming game Splatoon as well, which isn't a bad thing 'cause it's a really cool mechanic.

Cool fighting mechanics (the snow powers). I have to say the music was what I liked most. Graphics are super as always.
Very impressive what you were able to do in the limited amount of time. I feel that if you further scaled down on the content you could really make a very well-rounded experience!

Really great stat to a game! I thought that "1" should match with "A" though (since it's a jump-type attack). Good setting of the mood, and controls are solid. Also, it's just an interesting premise.

It looks like you bit off a bit more than you could chew with this idea. The handdrawn animation style must be very labor intensive.

It's very nice though, it has a unique feeling that I enjoyed a lot.
The special moves were a cool addition as well.

Dec 11, 2014 @ 10:09pm

Really? Art style, animation style, scenario and even the music are all copied directly from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game.
Check yourself:

The game is merely incomplete (logically, because of the time you had), but you should at least had worked on the gameplay a little more. Good work otherwise, though.

Nice graphics and intro. Hitting enemies already feels pretty good, but with a few effects (or perhaps more punching frames for SnowGirl), it would feel awesome!
The specials were also really cool!

I can see this becoming a really fun game. :)

Dec 11, 2014 @ 10:57pm

Lovely art in this game. There's definitely a solid base for a good game here. As it stands its obviously unfinished, but what you have here has a lot of potential. Nice music as well!

Tuism says ...
Dec 11, 2014 @ 11:12pm

So ambitious :) Really good animations, goes without saying :)

Also +1 for Scott Pilgrim vibes ;)

So, here comes constructive criticism!
> Of course... Sliding on the floor is not ideal. Walk animation needed.
> No gameplay... You should have added in some life, that would have been the minimum requirement for a game to have any sense of direction and need to do something other than standing around.
> You shouldn't be able to move while attacking
> Try and keep the button count lower and closer together - you didn't need to use 1 and 2 for the other attacks, that made them unwieldy. You had so many keys around the ones you already use. Heck you should actually have...
> ... used combinations. Like down + punch = that burrowing thing. Or holding the punch button for 0.5 sec to activate the snowball.
> The snowball attack didn't suit this kind of game - stopping in the middle of attacks to pull and charge feels a bit off.

Yeah I think that's it. Just gotta be more game-y. I can see you're a good artist learning game dev, keep it up, the best learning comes from doing :) I started learning game maker for the first time 2 years ago :) Last Sunday during Ludlum Dare I released my first (smallish) game. It's been unreal :)

nice appropriation of paul robertson's work but the overall feeling make me think the game is just an alpha version of scott pilgrim, by the look of it, you can do a much original and better game next time!

Good art. I'm not quite sure what the story was? Girl goes to the graveyard to lament her girlfriend, then... a snowgirl starts beating up monsters? I'm sure it would've made more sense if you had more time.

The gameplay was smooth, and the special attacks worked well! Neat stuff.

I really liked what little was there. I also fell into the same trap of not being able to get my full idea out there, so I feel your pain. I love the art, but it's pretty clearly lineart that's been scaled down - totally understandable for time, but I'd love to see you do some real pixeling for the final product. :)

Great job, thanks for sharing, and congrats on finishing!

Dec 29, 2014 @ 3:56am

Ok some replies.

Firs of all thanks everyone for checking it out

1. The art is not scaled down lineart, it's just unpolished pixelart. Or oekaki. At any rate, drawn at that size, for all it matters.

2. I totally see the scott pilgrim/paul robertson/o'malley resemblance. Never played the game myself, I totally love the look of it though, and completely adore the books and movie. Didn't mean to "rip" anyone off, this is just an experiment with completely underdone graphics, and besides I'm not making any money off it *or* using someone else's assets.

3. I'm not sad, not in pain, not unhappy, not regretting that this game isn't finished. As I'm not a coder, I learnt a ton in those three days: FSM enemy behavior, pathfinding, hitboxes, attack boxes and beat 'em up Z type movement. If this looks like a failed project to you, I don't mind. But it was awesome for me :)

Lots of love,

SuperDisk says ...
Dec 29, 2014 @ 5:33am

I, for one, really liked the art even in its current state.

What it really has an uncanny resemblance to is Jonny Smeby's stuff.

Dec 29, 2014 @ 7:01am

Cute! This game reminds me about Scott Pilgrim video game and this is good. May be it's good idea to leave main hero invulnerable to make game more friendly for female audience. Seriously! Also, game need more narrative (I don't understand link between intro and fighting) and goals (what I need to achieve, what I playing for). It's good concept. I subscribed in twitter to keep looking for updates.

Lovely art. Nice small details like monsters closing one eye when getting hit. Snow powers are simply awesome.

Too bad I cannot win since I would have liked to know how the story ends. With more monsters/creatures, more stats/powers and content this would be fun to play through.
