Ludum Dare 31 — December 5th-8th, 2014 — Theme: Entire Game on One Screen

Back to Browse Entries

All the World

by Cosmologicon - Compo Entry

Go on an adventure without ever leaving the screen.

Controls: arrow keys or WASD to move and jump. Space or enter to fire. Down at a portal will bring up a different "room".

This theme seemed way too easy: most of my past LD entries fit on one screen anyway. To challenge myself, I required that I had to incorporate exploration. To allow exploration without leaving the screen, I had the screen change around you. That's the inspiration for the stageplay theme of this game. I didn't want to just make it a cop-out where I'm getting away with changing rooms on a technicality. That's why enemies remain even when you "change rooms", and you'll see this is an essential mechanic when it comes to fighting the boss.

If you get stuck or frustrated, please try out the EASY link above. It gives you extra health, quadruple jump ability, and tells you the name of the "room" you're in, to help with navigation. Also see the tips and map in the link above.

The game works at different resolutions. If you click through to the site, you can set the resolution by resizing the browser window.

Music: autotracker-bu. SFX: as3sfxr. Fonts: Google Web Fonts.

Thanks for playing! Looking forward to your feedback.

Cool concept of changing between all the different scenes! I found the two BOSS KILLER scenes, but got lost trying to find the third one. Is there a trick/pattern to it? Great work!

I really liked this implementation of the theme, and it was all quite well executed. I know you have a little more guidance in the easy mode, but remembering how to get your way around is a tad confusing.

I suppose its part of the game to accidentally destroy a boss killer before the boss is out?

I like the level change idea, though I had a little trouble figuring out the goal.

Nice Job. I loved the changing worlds with different weather/time/etc. I'd love the combat and physics to be a little more polished, but a great concept. Very playable

This was super smooth on my laptop. Stylistically so different to most of the other games I've played so far, really stands out!

This is great! Tight controls, really cute graphical style, and a creative implementation of the theme. I also love how the bullets fall as they move -- it's a unique little detail that gives the game it's own feel. Awesome job!

Wow, this game was hard. Once I found the boss I forgot everything I had remembered about the map and drove around wildly. I think I managed to kill it with two lives left. :)
Really nice game with excellent graphics! Loved the concept as well

Great work! The graphics work really well, and the sound is good too. Interesting game design, though I think the nature of the shifting-between-levels thing is hard to remember - either that, or it's just me :) I used one boss killer, but then after a while couldn't find my way back to the others and stopped. (I didn't realise there were others until looking at the walkthrough) Nice entry though! I also liked that the enemies followed you through the rooms; seemed better for continuity.

Really cool concept and scene transitions. I found the boss and after that 2 boss-killers, but couldn't find the last one. Controls felt good and the difficulty was (in the end) right for me (apart from the confusion about where I could find the last boss killer)

Since you used outside bgm and sfx, you should probably opt out of audio.

I absolutely adored the strings attached to the graphics. It made me feel like I was watching a puppet show. I wish you had that style for the entire thing... the car and enemies seemed very out of place. I didn't count that against you, though, I understand the time constraints :)

I didn't like the feel of the controls. Gravity felt a little bit too strong (i.e. bullets being pulled downward and car jumps barely going anywhere). Other than that, I had a lot of fun playing the game. And I am usually not a fan of platformers. :)

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
