Muju Juju

by bjorn - Jam Entry

Muju Juju

Genre: Platform Defense Game
Summary: You are a shaman named Muju protecting your juju shrine from scary beasts.
Controls: Arrow keys, WASD, or left mouse button to move, number keys to select between up to 2 minions and use spacebar to summon that minion. E or Tab to visit the upgrade shop while standing at the shrine.

The game starts with you in front of the shrine in the center of your screen.

Enemies start coming at your shrine, trying to attack it! If they kill it, you lose the game.

You can summons minions using juju juice to fight off the scary beasts.

The scary beasts also attack you! If they kill you, you enter the Juju realm.

While in the Juju realm, your soul floats freely in the air. It gradually gets sucked into your body, limiting your movement.

After a time period, your soul enters your body again and you are resurrected!

All enemies drop juju juice when they die. Juju juice is a green goopy mass that floats around in the air.

You can only collect juju juice when you are in the juju realm.

You use juju juice to summon minions, and you also use juju juice to purchase upgrades at the shrine.

You have to die sometimes to get juju juice so you can summon more minions.

But it's risky because while you're dead you risk having your juju shrine taking damage.

Part of the interesting decision making is choosing when to die, and optimizing your juju juice collection path (designed so you won't be able to get all juju juice).

Another interesting decision making is budgeting your juju juice between upgrades and units (and what type of upgrades and what types of units).

Muju doesn't really do anything, he's just this super old guy limping around that throws his arms up in the air dramatically every once in a while to summon stuff.

How To Speak Juju

Take the first consonant(s) and add uju to the end. If it starts with a vowel, it's just uju.

So great! It's a little slow to start though, so getting upgrades doesn't feel very feasible until right when it gets so hard that I need all my juice to make minions. I'll be playing it more though to see if there's a better order of upgrades, some of them seem super cool. Overall super great.

It looks fantastic. I love games where I can feel the love of their developers in every little detail. Super cool sound scape... great. The gameplay feels good but there should be more positive effects for the upgrades. Great Job played it with a good feeling!

I don't really like that the game forces you to die. Also the diffuculty jumped at some point and the enemies just oblitared me even though I was summoning as fast as I could. I guess I should've gotten some better upgrades. Nice atmosphere and the gameplay works too, could amp up a bit faster though.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to place in the final results, you NEED votes. The easiest way to get votes is by rating other games. Judging lasts for 3 weeks following the end of Ludum Dare. For best effect, rate 20 games as soon as possible. Rating more games is encouraged.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
