Everybody knows where the Godfather is

by dunin - 48 Hour Compo Entry

This is my second ludum dare (I was in the "copain" team).

"Everybody knows where the Godfather is" is inspire by two things: the super fun game "hidden in plain sight" and the board game "Mr Jack Pocket".

The theme made me think of the mafia: hidden links between people of different worlds. I tried to work with that.

I use:
- phaser
- GraphicsGale
- sunVox

I work alone, but a friend help me for corrected my bad english: thanks Kieran.
I never made music (except once: a K7 for the 40th anniversary of my mother, I was 10) so sorry if the music hurts your ears, I tried...

This is a two players game, even if you can play against an AI, it's more fun with a friend.

(last thing: If you have a recent Firefox, you can play with XBox controller (move with right stick, interrogate with A and accuse with LT)...)

(and other last thing: when the game is done, press enter to restart)

good game!

It doesn't work for me. Windows + Chrome.

argh, bad start...
it works for me with Chrome. Maybe the browser isn't up to date. Or the loading too long (I didn't make a loading screen...)

Interesting, took me a while. Graphics remind me of C64 games :)

I like the idea, but I don't really see how it's connected (heh) to the theme. Also, the controls weren't very good, I managed to deduce the godfather, but when I pressed space there was another person already in the way.

It worked fine for me on Chrome+Mac. It was a fun game :)) interesting choice of theme

thank all!
@Druid: I didn't know it, cool game!
@Nelly: Sorry, I don't look at all the settings of itch.io, too tired. My mistake.
@arzi: it's people from "different world". the connection is that all know who the Godfather is. Maybe it's too fetched. And accuse the godfather means catch him (see the arrow). for two player it's a good part of the game...

Getting the timing right to accuse/question could be annoyingly tricky. Fun game and a logic puzzle to boot!

working fine ( mac / chrome ), I like this pixel art style and enjoy you did it with phaser :) ! Inspector win 8)

The wall of text in the start was a bit offputting and not really required as the controls and objective is quite simple. When you get past this obstacle the game it self it quite fun. Its fairly simple, yes, but sometimes less is more. I am not quite sure how this fits the theme though.

Interesting idea. It gets a bit tricky with them crossing in front of each other though but that probably adds to the challenge. Nice job! Just a note, I didn't know I had to click on the main picture to start the game, I waited for a bit for something to happen or load.

I really liked the game a lot, especially once you figure out a strategy, but the connection to the theme seems quite weak.

The idea here is one that's rarely seen in many games, and it can be really fun if done right. Sucks that I can only play with the Ai as I don't have anyone to join me atm. Don't really see any correlation with the theme.... Artwork looks good, though.

Big block of text at the start was a bit too much and made it sound like it's more complicated than it is. Game itself is strangely fun, if simple, and the graphics and sounds add a lot to it. I liked!

Simple but entertaining concept; not something I'd replay it over and over again, but still fun to play. I really liked the variety of characters; the only odd thing I noticed about graphics is that the inspector has outlines, while the suspects don't. Overall very solid entry, though its use of theme is a bit too metaphorical for most, I'm afraid. ^^"

(ps. I replied to your comment on my entry, maybe you'll find my response helpful)

That's slick! I even like playing against the "dumb ai".

Aug 28, 2014 @ 6:33am

Nice concept, but it's hard to select the person we want perhaps you could add something like "please don't move for a second" or use a selector attached to a selected person... I don't know... however, I found the godfather and that's a nice entry

I really enjoyed hidden in plain sight, so I'm looking forward to try this one with some friends -glad you included gamepad support, and even azerty keyboard config :D.

The dumb AI looks pretty decent, and the graphics fit really well with the game!

Replying to your comment on my game. I totally agree with the bad tone, different weapons and/or chords. I plan to continue the project and add those things in as I get the time :)

About your game: It is definitely something that you should develop further. The actors moved a little bit to quickly and sometimes the godfather was stuck moving behind someone else. That being said, I could see this being a big hit on the mobile app market. People are looking for something quick to spend some time and your game would do the trick :)

The concept is really nice. But I think it is missing something to make it more interesting...
The characters move a bit fast and as there are so many, it is hard to target the correct one. The graphics and music add a nice retro feeling. Overall, nice work!

This fits well within the emerging genre of asymmetrical couch coop games I've seen around the internet lately; it'd be great for parties and whatnot. I like the unique take on the theme! I also like that the godfather will lie to you; it creates interesting moments where two people accuse one another :P

The theme and graphics are really nice.
Actually the simple interrogation process is evry intuitive, my only critic is that maybe characters are moving too fast. But actually even with Dumb AI, the game is pretty nice and fun. The soundtracj could also be better but that really a details.

Salutation d'un autre ludum darer français! ;)

Big wall of text is definitely not best way to explain the game.
Was surprisingly fun, and liked the character art.

Was a bit hard to select a character and ended up making mistakes because of that.

But it was a really nice and different game.

Nice game. The controls are a bit fiddly as I found myself interacting with people I didn't mean to when playing a the inspector. Reminds me a lot of spy party.

Nice game. I think that without a friend to play with, it can be difficult and less fun. The overlapping characters mede it hard for me to see which character I was talking to. Great job!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to place in the final results, you NEED votes. The easiest way to get votes is by rating other games. Judging lasts for 3 weeks following the end of Ludum Dare. For best effect, rate 20 games as soon as possible. Rating more games is encouraged.

MORE TIPS AND DETAILS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
