Olympus Reunited

by jujule - Jam Entry

In a Galaxy fa... Who cares about the galaxy?! At some point in the mythological time MEN grew tired of playing with fire and stone. They wanted their fare share of HOT JAPANESE GIRLFRIENDS, ZOMBICIDE, iPxnz(TM) and all that, so decided to build a TOWER all the way up to mighty OLYMPUS where the GODS have it nice and cosy.

The GODS got angry and sent Llxd Blxnkfxin(TM) and his cousin and the cousin of his cousin, etc... to deny MEN their constitutional right to live as mindless CONSUMERS.

You can't let that happen!!!

---=== Instructions : ===---

Olympus Reunited is a bullet hell shoot 'em up. You shoot enemies to get ressources (basically your score). The closer you are to an enemy while shooting, the more ressources you get. As you gather ressources, a tower between the ground and Olympus will build. When the tower reaches Olympus (top of the screen), you win. If you loose 3 lives, it's game over.

- space bar at the presentation screen to start playing
- movement : arrows
- shot : space

The game works with a PS3 controller on Macs and with an XBox360 on Windows boxes, provided you configure the fire button in the configuration window Input tab. Sorry, I don't have a linux machine.

Source is included in each download file, with commercial plugins and assets removed.

I really like the heavy use of ASCII characters for the graphics; but FYI: it seems to glitch out on higher settings -- putting it on anything but "Good" (even higher), seems to have lots of articles or otherwise make the game unplayable.

That aside, I really liked this entry, but holy crap is it hard!

It works with the XBOX 360 controller, although it is hard to figure out which key starts the game on the keyboard (you can't start with the controller). The game also needs feedback to gauge progress. Enemies drop what appear to be "goods" (although I wasn't sure about this at first), but touching them appears to do nothing. I loved the ZZT-type/ASCII art-style and hope to see more of it in the future. I think it looks ambitious, but you probably ran out of time.

@BrainSlug83 Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you like it! Strange about the graphics bug though, I can't reproduce it on my machine ( very low quality will make graphics very blurry but I don't see the effect your mentioning ). What machine do you play the game on?

@DerekRumpler Thanks for the kind words and advice. I was indeed short of time. You can now start a game with the controller's fire button

I like the retro-style look.

Maybe a bit of collision? Otherwise really solid entry, good job. :)

Fun game! I liked how the title screen lead directly into the game. I wish I could have seen my score after I finished though.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to place in the final results, you NEED votes. The easiest way to get votes is by rating other games. Judging lasts for 3 weeks following the end of Ludum Dare. For best effect, rate 20 games as soon as possible. Rating more games is encouraged.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
