by torcado194 - 48 Hour Compo Entry

This is Igneous! A lava puzzle game.
Beneath the Surface, it is your goal to guide magma from below to the volcanoes on the surface!

There are many things to get in the way though, such as boulders, water, bombs, children, etc. Maybe even magic, who knows?

I had lots of fun with this LD, like always! This has been my 3rd LD competition. My ultimate goal was to not make a game so hard nobody could beat it, which is what happened to my previous 2 LD games. And i think i accomplished that.

Made a POST COMPO version which fixes some bugs making you able to win under false conditions. Thanks!! :D

Let me know how I did! And if you beat it! (even the challenge levels heheheh)
Feedback is sooo very appreciated.

Good luck everyone! :D

Had a lot of fun with this game! Cool mechanics, nice graphics and chippy NES music. I also really enjoyed letting the lava flow while still inside the tunnels and racing out, obviously kinda reckless but added some more danger! Good job.

Really liked this game! Great mechanics / level design. Nice graphics. Sound would have been nice, but its completely excusable because of the time limit.

Great job, the music was awesome and, as the comment before this one said, I enjoyed racing the lava out!

Wow thanks for all the awesome comments! I'm really glad you all love the music! Music is definitely one of the hardest parts for me, so that's really encouraging!

Great game, and as a few people said, racing the lava out was fun. Music was great, but it definitely took a while to get to more challenging levels.

fun puzzle-y game! fun dialogue/tutorial too. music is good, gets a little repetitive after a while.

Apr 29, 2014 @ 3:26am

thanks a lot guys! Yeah it could be a little faster, and i tweaked the speed a lot. unfortunately, the speed of block-breaking will boil down to how fast the character moves from one block to another, and that would mean the character moves too fast to control for some.
:D glad you all like it!

Nice game. Lots of levels to play through too. Reminded me (in the good way) of some of the NES puzzle games like Fire & Ice. Also, Nic's double-fist punch is super cute.

torcado194 says ...
Apr 29, 2014 @ 3:46am

@ghostmaple AAaahh wow fire 'n' ice is an amazing game! I was mainly basing it (at least the collision and digging) around DigDug.
and thank you! hehe. he is very proud of his boulderfists

It took about 2 hours, but I got through all 32 levels. Really good challenge and had a lot of fun playing. Found two things in the game that I think are bugs though. first I got the impression that you are supposed to save the babies, however you can still complete a level even if you kill them so long as the babies die before the lava flows out the volcano. Second, and more serious, you can let the lava leak out to the surface through a non-volcano hole and still win the level so long as you hide in water while the lava flows. It looks like you are checking to make sure 'Nic didn't touch lava and not did the lava rise above the surface level. Despite that I avoided the exploits and had a blast playing through the game.

@dalbinblue AAAAAAA I am literally ecstatic that you took the time to beat my game! You are my idol I bow to you.
This just made my whole week. I don't think anyone has ever beaten a game of mine.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Also thanks for pointing those out. I can definitely see why those are happening (you are right). And I'm even more honored that you actually beat the levels legit despite knowing those exploits! Holy crap man

My brother and sat there and worked on the puzzles for a long time. There was much cursing but we were really happy to get through it all. Fantastic game. You should consider polishing it up and releasing a post competition version.

Really nice! And so many levels *o*

torcado194 says ...
Apr 29, 2014 @ 6:48pm

@dalbinblue I might just do that then! I also had an idea for a sequel just because I had a cool idea for a game about digging and falling down endlessly trying to escape safely. And I already got something like it!

@kill0u thanks! Yeah I was really rushing in the last few hours because I decided it was a good idea to add 3 new block types, and I needed to design a few levels for each.

Level 8: dig into the earth beside the volcano, push the second block away to let the water flow all over the bottom, push second block back in to stop the water next to the bombs, hide in the water... blow the bombs and chuckle as the sky turns red :D

Very nice puzzle design. At first I thought it's a standard and basic thing but then the water and other mechanics eventually changed everything and made it sometimes a dynamic game (I'm almost sure I've completed those levels not how it was intended!). I was under impression sometimes that the level could be completed in at least few ways. For example, I've completed level 11 without using space button and while stuck in obsidian deep underground (I've dug a way for lava myself and then hid in water) but I'm not quite sure it was intended that way. Even though I didn't come up with another way to complete that level. Anyway, you've succeeded in creating easy to learn game this time, and it's definitely hard to master for me. Will play more and see if I can finish it all!

mortus says ...
May 8, 2014 @ 6:55pm

Completed the game, it was lots of fun. Some levels were too easy to beat though, probably because you didn't realize that there's an easier solution than the designed one during the short cycle of game development. As such, the two challenge levels are almost the easiest ones in the whole game (except the earliest levels and tutorial levels), I've completed both in under 1 minute by moving only 1-2 blocks (hint: sensor-drains are overpowered, you can move them almost anywhere easily to block lava flow where you need it).

May 9, 2014 @ 1:27pm

Was a lot of fun to play. Sometimes it was hard to read the tutorial text on the blue background (for me), but this is just a minor thing. While I like the overall style, the player character graphic doesn't fit in that well. Very nice puzzles (and so many, wow!).

torcado194 says ...
May 9, 2014 @ 4:36pm

@mortus wow! Thanks a lot for taking so much interest in my game to best it! :D yes I realize now how easy it is to win on unintentional conditions, I thought I designed it well enough that that couldn't happen, but 2 bugs are in place which allow that. If you can still win in the non-intended way on the updated version, then oh well. But thank you for the insightful feedback!

@rest thanks a lot! I'm so glad so many people enjoyed this!

Very cool game mecanism. Game smoothly increase in difficulty (great job that you introduce new mecanisms one by one). Nice effort in the mini tutorial.
IMHO it could be a bit faster to dig, that digging time kills a bit the play fun (first levels are obvious).

This is actually pretty clever and fresh take on good old sokoban. I've had fun with this.. Music is maybe little annoying after while or maybe it's just me.. :-D Good job.

csanyk says ...
May 14, 2014 @ 9:46pm

The early levels were pretty easy, but it starts getting really hard at 10. I couldn't figure out how to beat it, so I can't get to the rest of the levels in the level select. If it's a matter of timing the water break, I can't seem to get it right, and I don't see any other way of doing it.

torcado194 says ...
May 16, 2014 @ 6:28am

@csanyk ah cmon you can do it! keep in mind, water and lava move at the same speed. count the blocks itll take for each to get to where they need to go.

@all thanks!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to place in the final results, you NEED votes. The easiest way to get votes is by rating other games. Judging lasts for 3 weeks following the end of Ludum Dare. For best effect, rate 20 games as soon as possible. Rating more games is encouraged.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
