Sink or Swim

by noom - 48 Hour Compo Entry

Sink or Swim is the latest in fish simulation software. Enter the mind of Steve, a simple, lonely, goldfish. Can you survive the ravages of what lies beneath the deep blue sea? Will you...sink...or swim?

If you haven't figured it out, you're BENEATH THE SURFACE of the water.

Time Lapse :

Technical stuff:
Graphics / Controls / Audio Engines : Created by Me (released earlier in blog posts)
Physics Engine : PhysicsJS (
Artwork created in GraphicsGale (free edition)
Soundtrack created in LMMS
Sound Effects created with my mouth (edited in Audacity)

Written in JavaScript, renders using HTML5 Canvas.

Known issues : If the framerate drops you'll struggle to swim, try hitting refresh or closing other open games / apps. (sometimes the physics engine freaks out)
In rare instances the assets wont load, wait a minute and try hitting refresh.
The game was tested on chrome, and developed for firefox, if you cant get it to work at all, try one of these browsers.

Nice product.
-The music was very good, if a bit loud at times.
-Liked the physics (i.e. food/bubble collisions, kelp deformation).
-The controls and gameplay were quite solid once the game started. It may have just been me, but it seamed like there was a lot of time before food started spawning...? Regardless the concept of getting larger and heavier as you got more points was cool.

Nice job!

Really loved the music on this one! Solid implementation of the "fishy" concept, I liked the collidable reeds!

Could polish some of the art/menu text etc but for LD it's not like menus matter ;)

I like the kelp physics. The game is simple and works well, although the background is a bit empty.

Slow to start, but the fish is surprisingly maneuverable. I had some fun races to grab a bit of food before it hit the ground, and I was able to pull it off while dodging bubbles. Graphics are rough but solid gameplay.

Can't really say much apart from the fact that I had great fun while playing :) Good job!

Looks nice, but I think it would be better with more positive rewards instead of becoming a gradually more obese and unwieldy fish who is doomed to die. :P

I like the way the seaweed moves when you brush against it, though going near it is a bad idea.

Cool concept. Could see this being turned into a nice little mobile game with a little effort. As microapple already said, kelp deformation is cool - nice bit of polish :)

Interesting and cute game! I liked the concept and racing around to pick up food was enjoyable and simple. It was a bit slow to start though, and tried my patience a bit.

Cool game physics, funny character and sounds, pleasant game. I don't always understand why I lose health though. Good use of HTML5 !

I love the seaweed, that the food interacts with the bubbles, and that you float to the surface when you die.

Nice tune. Simple controls. Easy to pick up and play. :)

~Fun fact: minutes ago I played a game where I was a fish *avoiding* falling objects, and trying to *collect* bubbles. wat~

Woah, nice game!
Good gfx, great music, good game mechanics (constant visible progress, clear rules).
You should continue working on it and change levels / backgrounds after the player reaches a certain size, this will be fun to play longer!

I'm curious about that happens when I get REALLY big. I just couldn't live long enough.

Wow thanks for all the positive comments guys it's really nice hearing all of this. I really appreciate all of you taking the time to play/rate and then comment.
eastes : in my timelapse (which i've just added to the description) you can see the fish grow beyond the bounds of the game, it's pretty funny -

This was a nice little game, the music was a little ear-piercing though. A lot of interesting details.

My fish got so fat it could hardly swim, haha! My score says 490 but the score at the top left says 500 which is kind of funny too. I liked the gameplay a lot, actually. I found the high-pitched tones in the music pretty annoying though. Nice work!!

The fact that the music evolves as you progress through the game is cool, and I liked how you handled difficulty by making the fish grow. And the physic of the plants was cool!

The frowny face on the fish when it dies is pretty funny. The seaweed obstacles at the bottom are a nice touch too.

You had a great idea with the ability to mute the audio, since it hurt my ears at some point. Solid gameplay, though. Well done!

This is amazing, great work! Though at first I was a bit confused, I thought I had to get the air bubbles (dissolved oxygen) but I think that is just me.

Really nice mechanic. I didn't notice that bubble could hurt the fish at first time.

This is an ok little game, starts with not much action, but has its quota of fun while being contemplative at the same time.
Love the fluidity of the game, and rubbing myself against those sexy kelps...

Nice game. Starts slow, but it gets better with time.
The physics was really good.
I found the music a little annoying, but it can be muted so +1

I like that you expanded on the "fish food" mechanic I've seen in similar games by making the bubbles dangerous and making the fish get slower as well as bigger. Didn't play long enough to take over the whole pond, but it was pretty fun.

The difficulty progression on this game is great--it's slow enough to get a feel for it, and ramps up enough to be a real challenge.

Nice physics and audio. The game is fun to play. But I would like to see another version with air bubbles not permanently dangerous. Maybe a bar that gets inscreased with every bubble hit and decreased over time. If the bar is at 100% the fish dies. This would allow the possibility to recover from mistakes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to place in the final results, you NEED votes. The easiest way to get votes is by rating other games. Judging lasts for 3 weeks following the end of Ludum Dare. For best effect, rate 20 games as soon as possible. Rating more games is encouraged.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
