Moments of Paranoia

This is a pretty simple game that focuses on atmosphere and creating a tense situation. It's a bit of an experiment for us, so be sure to comment on what you think of it after playing!

We wanted to create a game that forced the player to make a choice where he/she didn't really know what the "correct" answer was, or if there even was a correct answer at all.

Also, as you probably noticed if you played the game, it's very inspired by John Carpenter's "The Thing".

The game was made by:
Pontus Lunden - Art, Music, Writing
Kristian Brodal - Programming, Implementation

- Sometimes when you click the head of the characters, you will shoot them instantly. To avoid this, click on their bodies when choosing who to talk to.

- The ability to click ahead in dialouge
- The ability to change character to talk when the selection menu is active (this actually was a feature during development, but at some point it must have bugged out. Whoops.)

well done wit this, the graphics are sooo nice! love the suspense and the overall idea. it was a little tedious reading all that dialog at times, i wish it was just a tad faster

Very interesting, with great graphics and a surprisingly amount of tension. One of the largest criticisms was that the text moved too slowly. I wasn't able to make my decision in time because it was in the middle of a line. Otherwise, a very solid entry!

The text moved a bit too slowly, would have liked the option to advance it manually and then have a timer count down once I can start interacting with it. Otherwise, very well constructed mood and atmosphere. I like that the ending is ambiguous.

Agree with above commenter, the dialog should be a bit faster.
But love all the aspect, especially the open ending (although I would love hint on the dialog to provide one clear answer)

I really liked the sudden realisation at the end of having been sucked into the paranoid atmosphere. I agree with the other commenters that the dialogue moved too slowly though.

The text is too slow for my taste, and I couldn't really think about who I should kill since I couldn't get enough information in time, so I kinda annoyed me to kill one of them for no particular reason. Aside from that, the tension was really well built.

Great mood and tension. Provokes reflection. Same comment regarding the text speed - ability to skip or a faster default would be welcome, especially since replay is valid.

Thanks for the comments everyone! We'll keep this version for Ludum Dare, but we might do a post compo version that takes care of the dialouge speed. If we do, we'll be sure to post a link here!

Wow, I really liked this. I liked the suspense and atmosphere of the game, the music just added to the tension. I shot the guy in the labcoat.

I think there has to be a repercussion for your choice. There's no connection to any of the characters to begin with, and fade to black robs your decision of any weight. There needs to be an epilogue -- even if you kill one person, it doesn't prove the identity of the other, so there is still ambiguity.

Also, the text needs to be skippable.

Very nice and mood and graphics. The audio was also quite right for this game. You got the theme very well! I wished there was a bit more explaining about the ending.

Almost for the whole game I thought it was the labcoat guy.. But then I realized that it was supposed to make me feel that way so I shot him. Well, dunno if I chose right. Anyway, very cool game, 5/5 for mood. Cool graphics also, and the sounds added to the mood.

I really liked this, nice take on an adventure-style time-limited dialogue puzzle! It did get pretty tense as the seconds ticked down, I had no idea if I made the right decision in the end or not! :D

Holy SHIT. For me, you accomplished what you set out to do for this game. I'm glad there was the intro for listening to a conversation before you make choices, gives you a bit of time to soak in the moment.

Very nice graphics and music!
I specially liked the minimalism of the music. Just some background noises and a piano. It creates a nice tension atmosphere while not distracting the player.
What bothered me about the text is that, no matter the size of the phrase, it seemed to scroll at the same speed, what doesn't makes much sense.
Now I freaking NEED to know who is the monster!

Lovely graphics and although I liked that there was no "You were right!" or "You were wrong!" screen I still felt like at least a hint about your decision would've been nice.

Great art, music, and inspiration. Good tension and atmosphere. Light on the gameplay. I was about to say I would have liked a more definite resolution, but if you take the approach where you shoot no one, all is answered. At least for me it was. :)

Ok being a fan of "The Thing" this rating is a no brainer. The music fucking rocks and fits supergood. Only thing is as mentioned by others the text speed. Especially at a second play. But probably hard to solve, because of the timer in the background...

I love The Thing (the John Carpenter one, not seen the other 2). I love this game too. Great ending. Would have preferred to have something where you could interrupt them mind talking rather than wait. Loved it though, best thing I've tried so far.

Checked out your game cause I remembered you from Jellycakes' stream (cristicbz here) and was not disappointed :D. Clicking ahead through the dialogue would've made slightly better, but I the idea was cool and the art and writing were pretty darn good. Nice job!

Graphics and audio are great, making a superb mood together with the always welcome Thing-like story (btw it's not Carpenter, he just did one of the movie adaptation, not even the first one, althuogh arguably the best), but it's not much of a game (I originally wanted to say something worse because I run into a "known issue" with the head instantly after the intro dialogues stopped, only after I returned here I noticed it and gave it another try). Super slow dialogues while time ticks away, guy in labcoat ranting for a minute about the gas without me able to stop him... No closure, no real end (I'd shoot my head because the guy with the pistol didn't seem to be taken by the gas as the other two).

Love the art, music and mood. Wanted to play multiple times but was unwilling to sit through the setup dialogue again. I'd love this game if I could skip it, then deduce the correct solution from their dialoge and art hints in the room, etc, Sherlock Holmes style.

Great mood, really tense, really cool concept. But the dialog don't gave you any hint or contradiction about who is the liar monster. After some tries I think that I clicked on all the questions and that help you to go nowhere. If atleast the order of your questions could change the ending.

That could sound a bit harsh, but I'm only a bit frustated because I really liked it I want more ^^U

Wow, nailed the sense of mood. The writing is pretty good too. I like the pixel art. Music is great especially when you shoot and how it blends in. Nice piece. Maybe i missed it, but i hope, if you make more of these moments, there could be a tiny hint of a correct choice.

Very impressive entry. I liked it a lot :)
I suppose the reason why the timer is so short is probably to force the player to make a choice. As soon as the game is finished in one way or the other, we realize that the trick is: no real ending... killing kind of any re-play value for the game. But at same time, that's exactly the point of this game, make you realize you had no real good choice. I personally believe that the monster -if it exists- would be the guy on the right, holding the gun (nice finale right?).

Anyway... really great game! Congratulations :)

Great game; a couple of improvements would be to show the directional line before pressing space, when the up/down keys are pressed, and to move on to next quickly when star failed to reach top.

Intense psychological game! Top marks for mood audio and graphics!
The placing of the shoot option is way too close to the cursor position though. I misclicked 'shoot' on the labcoat guy twice now...

a) The Thing, great inspiration. b) Nice tools, very adventure-gamey, cool to see in Unity. c) Could have done with a prompt to indicate I could click on the characters without shooting 'em! Got through most of my time before I clicked on a character - and even then I thought I was going to shoot him! d)More brevity in the dialogue next time - or let me skip through the text! Nice work for three days of creation!

Genuinely surprised no-one's proposed this theory yet. I know the game is supposed to be 'open', but I'd say there's a strong argument that the shapeshifter has to be you.

Think about it. Aside from the random fact you have a gun and do NOT look like some sort of security guard for what must be a high budget lab, look at how your character acts throughout the sequence. First the guy in the blue starts having breathing difficulties, then the lab coat guy - but do you, at any point beyond the initial huffing you start with? They say that the shapeshifter isn't affected by the gas. It's probably forgotten to mimic this because the only two people who can help it escape are before it, dying. It is too focused on trying to leave.

Infact, if you do let the timer run out, everyone else collapses first, with your character only collapsing to his knees, clearly watching the others - to make sure they aren't faking somehow, so his ruse isn't discovered by someone who could still prove useful? Only after assuring this does he go down, to pretend and wait for some investigation team to investigate the incident at the lab...

There's also the fact one of the 'proof of identity' questions for both lab and blue shirt guys are 'What is the escape code?'. It is the only shared question. This shows desperation on the shapeshifter's part to learn what that code is so it can leave, and the other questions are probably only there to throw off suspicion. You could argue that the character was asking to test the answer against his own knowledge, but the fact he'd ask something like that in the presence of a force they are trying to contain is very suspicious.

If you do shoot any one, the other one will still definatly know the code (as they both claim to have that knowledge), so you could use them to leave. Killing someone would dispel all doubt in thier mind, so they would submit to thier own desperate desires to leave, trust you, input that code...and doom everyone.

Also, letting the gas run out is as valid an option for it if you think about it. Eventually, someone will come looking, and open the door. There's nothing to suggest that in the chaos, the previously unknown fact that they can survive gassing was sent offsite. People thought they killed the shapeshifters once by gassing them; why couldn't that mistake be made again?

The story is greatly set by the introduction dialogue, I completely enter the universe and I could feel the tension. So great work on that.

This has been on my "to play" list ever since I saw those graphics: I love the classic adventure game vibe. The only thing I don't like is that the characters' breathing animation is a bit too pronounced, but that's a minor nitpick. I love how they visibly slump as the gas keeps entering the air.

The concept is great. The more general backstory has been done before, but is still powerful and tense.

Audio is excellent, among the best soundtracks so far this LD.

You've mentioned that you're going to add the ability to click ahead in dialogue, and I think it would also be good to be able to click out of one character's dialogue menu without selecting anything.

More of a story experience than a gameplay one, but it's a good story. One of the more memorable entries I've played. And like I said, the graphics and audio are made of gold.

Grammar nitpick: "intoxicate" really should be "poison".


So there's no right or wrong solution, eh? Mean, but feels appropriate to the situation.

Would have been fun to have the option to shoot yourself, just for completeness's sake.

Amazing tension and mood, really excellent sound and animations … but I failed to "play it" in any meaningful way. I was presented with a ticking clock and the people just stood there. I tried clicking the mouse, heard a bang, and saw credits :/ If the intro dialogue was skippable that would be teh awesome, really impressive detail and setting and mood

Great graphics and atmosphere. The character animation seems a bit odd, but I don't know how suffocating people look like. One thing I miss in the game, is the motivation to shot one of the others. Is it possible to kill the shapeshifter with the bullet? I think the situation wouldn't be so calm. Maybe one of the colleagues would attack the player or maybe both, because who wants to die? It seems illogical to me that all three wait to get killed.
