December 13th-16th 2013 :: Theme: You Only Get One
[ Real World Gatherings | Ludum Deals | Warmup Weekend ]
The ruling party, a Twine game about having the cake, but maybe not eating it.
Play in fullscreen if you like.
Four endings. Or perhaps it's five.
Update the web page if you want to restart from the beginning.
Update:
Added a postcompo version, where it's no longer necessary to restart from the beginning to experience the other endings. Instead, you have the option to go back and replay from the middle part and forward when you reach the end credits and scroll down the page.
There are other changes in the postcompo version too, the story is the same but the flow and structure have some minor alterations, and personally I think it's better and closer to what I had in mind.

hi, thanks for checking out my game!
yeah, meta is all the rage right now! no, but seriously, my trend-o-meter is constantly off, so i guess it's a fun coincidence. or perhaps twine is suited for meta-stories.
and yes, we had. those sure were the days.
Hm. I am a little conflicted, in a way the opening made me pay less attention to the game, due to it's repetition, and this may have made me instinctively pay less attention to the rest of the game once it actually progressed the story.
I think I would've liked more choice, and I guess the whole point here is "Have your cake and eat it too" so choosing only one eventuality makes sense..
But it felt a little like a story that had more depth than I was allowed to understand through the text, though as I mentioned this may have been due to the beginning, which almost made it seem bugged :P
That might be a danger in a ludum dare, submitting something that could be construed as bugged..
First time I heard Xavier Rudd and it's awesome.
The choke points I found a little distracting and chopped the flow...
Your writing has a way of drawing the reader into the experience, like actually living that life for a moment though it's only text on a screen.
@theholychicken: hm, what do you mean by choke points?
and thanks for playing and commenting, all of you!
I like the writing, but I'm not entirely sold on the intro. Especially since you can't skip it when you go back to try out all of the options.
Interesting, would have enjoyed more choices. Thought the game was bugged in the beginning :) Really liked the writing.
I feel like I should mention here that, over the LD28 weekend, I coded my LD entry while on the train to and from a reunion with friends. Yay for eating cake and having it too!
But yeah, nicely atmospheric. I'm not sure the repetition of the intro helps the narrative, but once you get past that point the game does a good job of drawing you in.
I like the writing, it's a bit.. well.. not really much of a game, but it's interesting! It broke a few times on some of the paths (clicking on the only option just repeated the same thing), but restarting the game usually fixed it.
Nice mood. There was a bug in the original version that made you loop in the date's memory. Liked a lot the writing.
It's something wrong here? : http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/37fx9vn7aamlkny/The%20ruling%20party.html#1.s.h.s.g.s.f.s.e.s.q.6.9.8.3.m.y.x.a.7.d.x.a.7.d.x.2.4.5.x.10.p
hm, seems like i accidentally changed the original version while making the postcompo. it's now back to the original state, and there should be no bugs left.
thanks for all your comments!
I had the biggest scarejump of my life when I saw my name in the inspiration section. That's probably the biggest compliment I've received since I've started making games. Now because of this it feels a bit awkward to comment on your game, so I'll come back later, play it again, and leave another comment about the content.
haha, yeah, i always like to pay tribute to the things and people that's been inspiring me at the moment of creation. i'm glad it had such an effect on you.
Jag spelade det på svenska!
Extremely original concept; Twine is perfect for this kind of storytelling, but I've never seen it done before. The writing is good in a low-key way, with some beautiful descriptions and great use of detail (such as the "Frankenstein" bit). By and large, it felt very realistic.
I like the way you used the music link.
Good story and fits very well with the theme. Plus, we Swedish Twine users have got to stick together, right?
thanks for your kind words Christina! we should, and i would love to play more twine games in swedish too!
Interesting. Until I'd figured out how to progress, I was a little confused/disappointed with the game. After that, I thought it was nice.
i like these type of games but just some stories were way too long. Give this man some high ratings XD.
Interesting - I thought I knew where this was going but I didn't. Neat idea.
Heh, nice concept. There wasn't much choice but still made me laugh.
Nice story with good shot of influential speculations :)
Hover effect of the text is breaking some lines badly, makes me think you change the text content on rollover.
Very interesting. I was confused at first but by the end I think I figured out what was going on.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to place in the final results, you NEED votes. The easiest way to get votes is by rating other games. Judging lasts for 3 weeks following the end of Ludum Dare. For best effect, rate 20 games as soon as possible. Rating more games is encouraged.
MORE TIPS AND DETAILS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE
TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up.
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
Hi Kristoffer.
Another swede in the compo! Fun..
We had some contact during the last LD?
Nice looking game.. this is the third meta Twine game.. have I missed something?
