December 13th-16th 2013 :: Theme: You Only Get One
[ Real World Gatherings | Ludum Deals | Warmup Weekend ]
How good is your reaction time ? Dream forever, live once is a short metaphorical game about life.
I really tried to stick with the theme. The game will only let you play and make a score ONE TIME, so make it count :)
Controls : arrow keys / space
So what's your score ? So far the better one is 1728 !

Nice games, could get too far cause i'm not skilled enough :D I would have liked the difficulty to be a bit slower to enjoy the travel! But the impression is really nice, it works perfectly and will try it again some time, well done! =)
(i think sounds could be a bit better also ^^)
Maybe this is the reason why I am sleeping so badly at night! :P
Nice entry! I love the pixelated graphics :)
Gameplay is addicting, too. I love these kind of games.
This is so beautiful, one of the best and most interesting looking games I've played so far. Really impressive work for 48 hours!
Really nice game. The graphics and atmosphere were excellent. Good job!
Got hard very fast. :P I was hoping for some better sounds but overall a nice game. :) The graphics really pleased my eyes!
Thanks for the comments :)
The sounds are a bit of a disappointment for me too ! I spent a lot of time on a procedural generation of the music as I wanted to have the tempo of the music and the speed of the game evolving together, but it didn't work out, I don't know if it was me or just flash player not being able to play the sounds with enough precision, so I had to make something else quickly.
Awesome look.
As you said, sounds are a bit off (music seems not on the same speed as the game). I would have loved more feedbacks too (like how many mistakes are left).
The lack of feedback on mistakes is intentional :) This is intended as a metaphor on life, you're not supposed to know when things are coming (death especially)
Hi, you really did a great job on the graphics. Though the sounds could have been better (at least for a game that does that much with sounds). I liked the gameplay itself but it was kind of hard for me.
The sfx was rather a mismatch with the rest of the track, and it took a lot of hits to finally get game over. :P
Leaving that aside, the graphics and overall feel was wonderful! For 48 hours, this is awesome!
Maybe you should get hurt if you press the wrong key too, as you can just mash the keys and keep going forever. lovely graphics! I love that glowy pixel mosaic style. Great entry!
I think there needs to be some penalty for pressing the wrong key, I can just mash arrow keys with my fist and go on forever ;)
Still, if I stop being troublesome for a moment and play it how it was intended to be played, I think its a really cool idea, and I appreciate the metaphor.
Thanks for the comments ! I coded a wrong hit penalty initially, but I decided to remove it, as it felt too harsh, and I assumed that not many people would try to spam the keys. I have to say I'm not the best kind of player for this type of game and I can't go on forever. :)
haha, I have games you can't restart too, but there it's not intentional.
Those graphics really are appealing. The way it moves the way it looks, the 'thoughts' in the background. Lovely!
I was no where near 628 :(
Well done! I like it a lot! Got to 109 :) Graphics were great!
1728 At first, I thought I was going to hate the one life thing. But then I played it, and it seemed to work pretty well. Though sometimes it wouldn't always register my keypress, but it was pretty good.
Lovely game. I am surprised I got as far as I did - I am absolutely terrible at these kinds of games.
Nice mood, fits with the title. Cool graphics as well, nice job!
Graphics and music were cool, but the game mechanic is open to spamming keys and there appears no win/lose scenario? Was hoping the boat would sink lower in water or something the more you got wrong. :D
The more you get wrong, the more the background changes. The constellations represent various stages of life, and eventually the boat sinks. But maybe you only tried the practice mode.
Wow quite a challenge there... procedural music? changing tempo? Perhaps you could fake it with different fixed tracks, turning volume on and off whether you hit or miss a button? That way you have more control over the overall song and I think it might sound better. (graphics are NOM) -Mark
Beautiful graphics, neat idea but there was only a small pocket of time where I was truly having fun - the beginning was too easy and then it got too hard too quickly.
And yeah, would've loved to have had music in a rhythm game.
Really nice graphics. The game itself on the other hand gets to be way too difficult, and the drum beats from pressing the arrow keys don't fit with the song at all.
Grafx were awesomes!
You only get one chance to play, sticking to the theme litterally is a clever Idea.
But as said before: there some lack of feedback (either for failure as for doing it right). Except the scoring mechanics there is not much to keep you in the game.
Really nice art. Would be great if there was a little more synchronicity between the music and the beat.
Amazing graphics! Totally love the metaphor as it pertained to life. You did a great job with only 48 hours :) How did you get the pixels so tiny?
Nice graphics. I wouldn't have choosen garageband music, but something that matches the keypresses. Anyway well done and great pixelart style!
I enjoyed every aspect of it (mechanics, graphics and take on the theme), except for the audio. I think there's plenty of room for improvement in that aspect, and when you do that it will be a great game.
beautiful graphics and I quite liked the story unfolding!
Adore the art style. It may only be because I was a huge Guitar Hero player back in the day, but I found the difficulty curve to be really easy. Still had a good time, though! :)
Very cool :D Lack penalities when you fail the touch. But it's good!
Congrats! I really like the metaphor! And as simple as the game may be, the sum of all mechanics really do manage to get the message through in an impressively intuitive / emotional manner. You get to train, but the menu tells you that there's only one chance when it's for real, and only when you actually start playing for real that you get to know about the stages of the life thing.
Maybe I'm super sensitive to the sad, linear nature of our lives, and how it sometimes indeed feels like an inevitable run to our end... And I feel even more for people I see around me, having to deal with getting old and coping with the fact that they didn't manage to do all they wanted in their lives... As Ray Kurzweil says, to me death indeed is the greatest of all tragedies. Or as Tyrion Lannister says, the problem with death is that it is so definitive! hahaha
Anyways, what I mean is that I could really relate to your game. It's subtle, evokative and obviously has a very honest and personal message. I love it!
Guitar hero - yey! With cool graphics and sound. But I wish the tones would be more in sync with the playing track, so one could really help play the music right. They seem to be random now.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to place in the final results, you NEED votes. The easiest way to get votes is by rating other games. Judging lasts for 3 weeks following the end of Ludum Dare. For best effect, rate 20 games as soon as possible. Rating more games is encouraged.
MORE TIPS AND DETAILS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE
TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up.
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
Cool graphics!
