December 13th-16th 2013 :: Theme: You Only Get One
[ Real World Gatherings | Ludum Deals | Warmup Weekend ]
This is Bowerbird Quest! You are a lowly bowerbird and you need to find a mate. She will tell you what you need to decorate your love nest, go and find the items (in the right order) and return to the nest to see of you have won her heart.
Edit: thanks for all the comments/feedback! The idea was based on "you get only on... true love" and then i thought about the bowerbirds and then this game emerged ;) I had originally had it where if you fail on a level you have to start over (so you get only one chance as well) but it seemed too hard, but now i'm thinking of changing it back...
There aren't any sounds. i had planned for some but ran out of time. hopefully i can add some later and release this somewhere :)

It might be because it's almost 6am, but I can stare at that hopping all day. Teehee! *hophophop* and back *hophophop*
Very nice game! Try and make it a one-button game, I bet you can.
pretty birdie. heads up that you need to collect things in the particular order, stung me my first playthrough.
The art is simple yet very visually pleasing. I don't see how the theme applies here but the game mechanic is successfully executed.
Awesome work! Found myself laughing at the ladybird when she couldn't deal with an extra stick, come on lady look at the nest, you know we're gonna need it anyway.
Great style, interesting take on a memory puzzle game. I didn't read the right order bit too haha. Would really come alive with some SFX.
A fun memory based game. Really liked the art style. The blinking bird is a great touch. Well done!
This is really nice. And as Piat said: Just a couple of sound effects could have improved it quite a bit.
I relly liked the game! Aesthetics are great and mechanics is simple but entertaining. Some sound effects would add up so much to the atmosphere though. Great job!
Hey, I'm not too fund of memory games but I like the mix with the platformer !
I also like the look and athmosphere. Oh and one little thing, I found that the camera is kindda too "centered", it happened to me several times to bump into an item cause I didn't have time to react. (but maybe it's because i'm dumb :D )
thanks so much for all the feedback everyone! yes, sound would have been awesome! i totally wanted to add sound but suddenly looked up to see time running out :) i will definitely be finishing this off so keep the comments coming!
Fantastic art. It's a little too easy to pick up things by accident, but I suppose that's part of the challenge. The general mood is great, adding some calm music + little sfx would really take it to the next level. Love the background effect too. (Also your kid's off to a great early start)
Idk mcapraro, I think your son has you beat ;). Nothing cooler then a dad and his son making a game together. Glad you guys are joining the LD community. Thanks for the games :D!
thanks for the comments and the warm welcome to the community, my son and i cant wait for the next LD!
It's kind of annoying how you can't drop things but I guess I should be more careful with my jumping. The artwork is incredible.
Nice artwork. You wrote something about sounds in this game, but I don't hear any - is it correct?
The art style seems great. Could do with a little better controls, but feels nice
Pretty nice. The graphical style was great. Gameplay wise it was alright, but there needs to be a way to quickly restart the round or drop items, the controls are clunky and it's easy to accidentally pick up incorrect items.
The jumping was a bit unpredictable. I loved the artstyle especially, very charming!
The idea was well implemented and the graphics were amazing, but i didn't like the theme usage
Superb graphics, and great walk-jumping of the bird. (Of course an extra star for it being bowerbird-themed). The obvious things to add would be some music, a different sprite for flight, and maybe the bird should just jump around in place when the user is not doing anything (because that jumping was so good).
liked it. high rates just because woman behavior is illustrated 100% accurately. this other bird is a bitch.
Nice art, the female bird is a bit demanding ;). Also when you picked an incorrect item it is not nice that you first have to walk back. Overall a fun game!
Parallax is very fun! THe gameplay is good! And this is a good serious game for memory! :D
Nice! That controls pretty well, and I like how the bird's heart is broken if you mess up. :D Idealized you a bit there, huh? ;)
Nice graphics :) The idea is original, funny ! The control are a little hard, so it add to the challenge. Great work!!
Really nice idea! Like it, nice and moody. The work seems solid, good work!
Beautiful game and brilliant concept. It would have been nice with some music but overall, really fun game to play :)
Wow, the origami style graphics were awesome. Had fun playing this. The only downside was that the camera didn't show too much in the direction you were moving, so came down to either be slow and careful or inevitably pick up wrong stuff. But I liked this game pretty much.
This is just a fantastic game. Love it! Definitely one of my favorites.
Fun game, great graphics, well done! I included it in my Ludum Dare 28 compilation video series, if you'd like to take a look :) http://youtu.be/tnNlwxp-9J8
haha, thanks Jupiter for giving it a go! thanks everyone for your great feedback!
Nice game and graphics. Has issues though. That you can't drop along with not always being able to see makes for weird combo... You often loose for reasons unrelated to you -_- You just did not see...
Also it would have benefited greatly from some ambient forest background sounds.
Still nice graphics and idea :)
Cool mood and cute graphics! Given more time it could become a great atmospheric find-and-bring kind of game (if you add flying of course).
I like it. The graphics style is cool :)
Unfortunately you didn't add sound to it

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to place in the final results, you NEED votes. The easiest way to get votes is by rating other games. Judging lasts for 3 weeks following the end of Ludum Dare. For best effect, rate 20 games as soon as possible. Rating more games is encouraged.
MORE TIPS AND DETAILS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE
TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up.
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
This was my first Ludum Dare and it was super fun and exciting. My son (9yo) also participated and built his own game (in Scratch).
To build this i used:
Art: Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash
Code: FDT, Adobe AIR, Flash, CitrusEngine
Sound: Adobe Audition
