Paint Share

by zatyka - Warmup Entry

*Works best in Chrome, but it's not required

I wanted to test the waters with online features, and somehow settled on a simple paint application that allows users to share their drawings. 48 hours, and 9 colors later, anyone can create a simple 20x20 image and share it with the world (well... the world within the application ), all while viewing a regularly updated feed of other users' submissions.

There are only 9 colors, but my goal wasn't really to give the user a way to create beautifully colored images. Instead, I'm hoping the enjoyment comes from sharing and viewing images that you, and other users, create.

Communicating with my server, and implementing online features was relatively simple. The thing that actually took the longest was figuring out a flood-fill algorithm. What I ended up doing is FAR from perfect, but it actually creates a pretty cool visual effect.

Controls should be relatively familiar. The left mouse button does just about everything. The eraser is treated like a color, so you can use it with any of the tools.

You can save multiple images to your temporary internet files, but you can only load/share one image with other users over the web. Of course, this one image can be changed at any time. Please note, to share a drawing, you must create an account within the app.

The application is far from perfect (the circle tool is crap), but I'm actually quite happy with it. I hope you enjoy the application, and I'm looking forward to seeing what images you all share. As always, feedback is welcome.

As an amatuer (at spelling and development), I find this is amazing! Did you have to use any server side languages like PHP?

Thanks! All online interaction is handled with AJAX, SQL, and PHP.

Thanks for the kind words!

Right now, the app only supports a single submission per user, so I think you probably saved over your previous submissions. You can always create another account to submit more images.
