by jefrsilva - 48 Hour Compo Entry

There are no instructions available for the game. Part of the fun is to try to understand its world.

Probably not balanced enough, I don't even know if it's possible to finish the game :D

- Bugfix for movement keys not acting like they should (src: Animal.cpp)
- Removing a for that added too many "enemies" making the game impossible (src: Environment.cpp)

Patched version here:

I think you might be assuming too much from the player. No real feedback except a 'game over screen' and a boop sound effect. I really couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do, pressing the arrow keys was making the white lines bigger and smaller didn't seem to keep me alive or do anything important.

Very strange game, I have not quite understood. The audio is a little scary.

Instructions would have helped, even if it was only the basics. I didn't understand what to do either. I liked the lines moving, i just wish i knew what i was supposed to do with it. :)

Well I think I figured it out atleast :D

You just have to avoid the enemies right? And it gives you different ways of detecting where the enemies are each time.

I don't think I'll rate this... It's far too obscure for me to understand much.

Then again, my game isn't too intuitive, either. I'll rate some categories.

I wandered around eating FOOD and then when the screen turned yellow I ate another GUY to become a NEW GUY. Different colors have different kinds of awareness? I loved playing as a "blind" or "deaf" creature, except I would have liked to see those types eliminated as the enemies ate them.

Overall, I really enjoyed exploring this cryptic universe of symbols and relationships, but would maybe take the enemies out or change what happens when they hit you; the point of the game is to figure everything out (I think?), and bumping you back to the title screen if you hit one feels really punitive and frustrating.

Interesting idea, but I think it would work better if the goal was clear to the player. Finding the solution to a problem is much more fun than neither knowing the problem nor the solution.

I only understood this after reading your instructions/post mortem post.

First: I hope this is the first and last time in my life that I reproduced without being aware of it and reading about it in a blog for the first time :)

But seriously: I personally think that the idea is brilliant . I agree that some games really are fun _because_ you need to figure out yourself what and how to do things but maybe your game is a bit too extreme in this sense.

Nevertheless I was able to figure out some mechanics and reproduced (without knowing it) and died eventually (without knowing why) when I only was able to "hear" and started over. I got this "line-thing-direction-sense" on my next try and died very unexpectedly. I played several times actually ;) So what I really like about the idea is how the game translates the visual and audio sensory inputs into sth else that the player has to explore and understand in order to proceed. What I didn't like is the lack of information in the beginning. I understood most of what I did only later when I read your blog entry. A short introduction or tutorial would have been really nice.

All in all I really really enjoyed this experimental game!

I really tried my best to understand what was going on, but too many things changed and I wasn't really able to make any sense about what the purpose of the game is. Quite... how would I put it... artistic? :D

The concept is hard to grasp, but really interesting and original. Sadly the gameplay itself isn't so good (depends too much on luck I think), but it can definitely be fun occasionaly. Overall, I think LD should have more games like this - it's about being bold and experimenting after all.

Very interesting. I gathered som info from the comments. I don't know if I would have got it without those.
Original, but I don't see a winning or scoring condition, just an avoiding death condition. Give the game a goal and I think it will become much more fun. But a solid 5 starts for innovation.
