Sandevo - The Evolutionary Sandbox

by leparlon - 48 Hour Compo Entry

The game was not finished, and I had problems creating a build that would work in any other computer, so I HOPE it works (My first time with LWJL + Slick.. it was fun! :) ).

This is about playing with evolution, the creatures haves some parameters and needs that randomly evolve each time they reproduce. Its ALL RANDOM, the only way you can influence is by changing the environment.
The AI is scripted, and remain constant through the generations.

When finished, this game should be about surviving in a pretty random world by tilting the evolution your way> You can do that by killing off the agressive creeps, letting only the passive ones reproduce, or by modifying the environment, build fences to force evolution on specific species (works!), plant vegetation (works), etc.
(you can do this things on this version, but there is no reward or goal)

This thing here has ALL the features minus:
-Tile merging
-At least 30 creature frames
-A freaking GOAL

But I found it fun to play while angry.

Controls (I am releasing it with all the debug controls)
WASD - Move
1-6 - Simulation Speed (important)
X - Place plant ou cursor location
Z - Place Fence on mouse cursor location
Mouse Right - Remove Fence on cursor location
O - Add Herbivore
P - Add Carnivore

And this name is temporary, since it wont be a sandbox when finished.

PS: The creeps may look the same, but that is because I had no time to make enough skins, the parameters may be VERY different.

(THIS LINK is for a windows version WITHOUT executable, double click the jar )

Something about swinging that sword around, just clicks. So fun. If the game was centered around it, say, full swings do more damage, enemies shield on one side, things like that, that would be really awesome.

You should make it web-playable.

@Materie I Agree, that was the absolute last thing I did on the game.. were it the first, things might have took a different direction.
@midgard I could not (tried for over 5h), I'm pretty new on this Java stuff (could barelly export an executable). Sorry!

I like the idea of a sandbox farm like game. It works on Lion for me, when I start the jar file.

There is not sound? Too bad... Still like your game.

interesting but as you said, not really much of a game, just a cool little simulation. couldnt keep carnivores alive for very long on any speeds higher than 4, for some reason as the speeds get higher it seems that they die off faster than they can eat so they always go extinct.

on osx could not get it to work using the application but for anyone else with this problem just pop open terminal, navigate to the directory that the sandevo_mac.jar is in and do "java -jar sandevo_mac.jar" and that opens it up!

But yea, Looks like a cool concept, too bad you didn't have enough time to complete it!

That has a lot of potential.

Like they said, this game had a lot of potential, too bad you couldn't finish it. :\
The theme and the concept are good, I liked it!
