Radiation Man

by schnerble - 48 Hour Compo Entry

Radiation Man is infected with a rapidly-advancing form of radiation poisoning. He needs water pick-ups to reduce it temporarily.

However, he can pick up stable mutations that grant him extra powers! (... in some future version)

For now, his goal is to pick up the mutation devices and evolve before the poisoning kills him.

Watch out for the radioactive jumping robots.

It all makes sense, honestly...
(but probably would've made more sense with a bit more time)

This requires WebGL. I've tested it on Chrome, and all looks fine; it does also seem to run on Firefox, but it's a bit slower on that on my machine. I'd like to have had a chance to test it more thoroughly on different machines, but there you go.

There's not much depth to the game, I know - but it's given me some ideas and experience for next time. As it's my first serious WebGL and JavaScript experience, I think it worked out OK :) (however - apologies to anyone who looks for the pretty random code structure... was learning as I was going, to a fair extent!)

Thanks once again to increpare (Bfxr) and Greasemonkey (Autotracker) for their stellar work and contribution to the community.

Edit 2012/9/3: Thanks for the constructive feedback. I've made a couple of quick fixes, and here's a small post-compo update with some nicer gravity, buffered sounds, and no ability to collect things after death :)
Edit 2012/8/27: I fixed a typo that caused lots of errors, and potentially crashes, in Firefox. It's a change of four characters only - nothing more. I've updated the link to point to the changed version. Here's the original submitted version, for the record:

The game works well (Firefox here), pretty smooth and comfortable to play. Nice work :) Too bad you couldn't have hacked in some levels or powerups to extend the game duration!

Not bad! Controls are nice and smooth, but jumping did feel a bit floaty.

I had a crash though: when I collect enough to mutate, the game freezes. The javascript console has an error saying you'd called gl.vertexAttribPointer without having an ARRAY_BUFFER bound. This is on Chrome, tested on both OS X and Windows.

Work on my machine using Chrome. Controls were okay other than the weird jumping gravity.

Slightly disjointed graphics, though the 3d is kind of cool.
Gameplay works well enough, but it is quite a short game :)

Controls are fluid, but jumping feels a little weird. Could be fun when it's finished

Hey, i love how you have managed to mix 2d and 3d objects with animations, i have some kind of lag with sounds, like 0.3seconds later since I pick up something, then I got killed and the char body picks a powerup then it appears like dead but with the normal sprite, a zombie? :D
Check it out:

I think the gravity is low when jumping, like @scoots said

Thanks for the constructive feedback, all :) I've made a couple of quick fixes, and here's a small post-compo update with some nicer gravity, buffered sounds, and no ability to collect things after death :)

Nice music! Jumping needs more gravity, but good job!
