Update: v55 [7e69767]
48 Hour Compo Entry is tagged v1.0 in GitHub.

Windows 32 (15.6MB):
Windows 64 (15.9MB):
OS/X (24.5MB):
Love (13.8MB):

The year is 2045, and the singularity is here. Machines have evolved, and
they're gunning for us. Ray Kurzweil predicted it, but he didn't imagine that
it would start an armageddon between man and machine. Our three heroes,
Kurtz, Tuxxer and Charlie, set off in a daring do or die adventure to destroy
the central computer which runs all of the AI.

Destroy the evil AI ships so you can plant the nuke at the central computer.
You have three unique lives to do so.

The game has three subtle modes:

Easy: Finish the game. Everyone is expendable.
Medium: Finish the game only losing one comrade.
Hard: Finish the game with the whole team in one piece.

* Use your movement keys to avoid the falling bullets.
* Space to shoot!
* +1pt for every hit!
* -1pt for every miss.

* Three original almost-human characters made in GIMP!
* 13 original things that look like spaceships made in Alchemy!
* Original music made in LSDJ!
* Over 35 unique sound bytes made by one voice actor! (There's 36)
* Tons of fun dialog that will make you think twice about your life!
* Awesome slash screens that will make you pee your pants!
* Beautiful dynamic menus with three different backgrounds!
* Font made with tons of pixels in fontstruct.
* Awesome sound effects effortlessly generated with bfxr using all eight bits!
* Wild and Crazy 3D like moving background thing that will eat your CPU!

**If you are running OS/X, you may find that it will lag.**
To fix this, disable SFX in the main menu!

why is the osx build so much bigger and slower?

Aug 27, 2012 @ 10:52am

Er, what does this have to do with evolution?

josefnpat says ...
Aug 27, 2012 @ 3:22pm

Unless I'm mistaken, there are some libraries that OS X needs, that windows already has, therefore it's bigger. Its only slower if you have SFX enabled, due to a audio threading issue in the OSX software.

One idea of evolution is a theory developed by Ray Kurzweil from his rather famous book, "The Singularity Is Near"

The plot is rather simple: In the next epoc of evolution, AI and Nanotechnology will oust the human race. Instead of using people, I decided to add a little humor by adding humans descendants (e.g. monkeys, although I'm not sure about penguins or frogs ;))

Really nice entry well done. It seems a bit like everything moves just too fast, it is really hard to get out of the way of the bullets coming towards you.

Aug 27, 2012 @ 5:52pm

That's some star fox I see there.

Congrats on the effort of doing all your own voice acting.

Pretty cool game. Loved the background effect.

I have absolutely no clue how is it even pretending to be related to evolution, but I enjoyed it anyway. Loved the jokes.

The windows 32 link seams to link to a windows 64 version, therefor i can not play this one, sorry, looks interesting though.

Aug 27, 2012 @ 6:03pm

That was fun but, is just me or the dialogs were just getting in the way? I couldn't see anything underneath it!

josefnpat says ...
Aug 27, 2012 @ 6:20pm

Thanks! You get a ton of health for each character, so expect to take some damage :)

Star Fox did have some influence :) Thanks!

If you're interested, check out the wiki page on Ray Kurtzweil's "The Singularity Is Near": It talks about how technology is evolving. In this game, you need to KILL IT! I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

@kevincorrigan Thanks for noticing! I fixed the link. I don't know how to contact you, otherwise I'd tell you.

Yeah, I was having real problems knowing what to do with the dialog boxes myself. I settled on "in the way, but fade away when not needed". In retrospect, I should have thought about the GUI before making the game.

Aug 27, 2012 @ 6:26pm

I kinda like that you have a few different characters in there, although the jokes/quotes weren't that interesting since they mostly just seemed like non-sequiturs. I also didn't understand what this had to do with the theme. Gameplay was pretty basic.

Aug 27, 2012 @ 6:29pm

I liked the visual style of the menus and characters a lot better than the in-game graphics, also, the dialogues were funny, but they did get in the way of the action. Very well polished and fun though!

Nice I'm glad you fixed the link it is a fun game, good job.

Cool game, loved the humor XD. The ships are really fat and the bullets move to fast to avoid them IMO. The graphics and characters were also great.

Aug 27, 2012 @ 7:51pm

Very funny. Loved the voice acting and the animals. The gameplay itself was rather bland. It didn't help that on my computer things lagged pretty badly later on (Windows 8 running 64 bit version). I'd love to see you expand on those personalities for a proper game.

Very cool game with very cool characters too! The 10º wave was pretty hard! xD

josefnpat says ...
Aug 27, 2012 @ 9:12pm

That's an issue I had with the game myself. I had this cool idea for fake 3d graphics, and then it fell short when I realized I didn't know how to make spaceships. Thank you!

I'm glad you got to play.

Perhaps the bullets should have been slowed down, and the health reduced? I was hoping to get less of a defender clone :)

I'm surprised it lagged for you! Can I get some more of your machine specs?

I'm glad you got that far! I was able to beat the game within three lives, so I can only imaging someone else will!

Pretty crazy. The dialogue popups got in my way once or twice, but I wouldn't want to get rid of them; they're awesome!

vilya says ...
Aug 27, 2012 @ 10:34pm

The speech bubbles were taking up way too much space. Other than that, it's very very polished - and really quite hard. Great work! Didn't seem to have too much to do with the theme though.

dalbinblue says ...
Aug 27, 2012 @ 10:36pm

The first play through I thought I had defeated the boss (it's life was at zero and I wasn't near a shot as best as I can tell. The second time through, I got a game over after only two of the characters were expended (it was just as the boss was appear, might be related).

Other than that, it was funny and well put together.

Aug 27, 2012 @ 10:46pm

Okay, your hitbox was way too big, so it was pretty much impossible to dodge in the later levels :( My strategy was just to go back and forth on the left side, because the dialog boxes kept popping up and obscuring the game on the right - maybe not the best decision. But aside from those criticisms this is a pretty nice game. The profile pics of the different guys look great! I got to the boss, but failed to beat him.

raohmaru says ...
Aug 27, 2012 @ 11:35pm

Great game, but the ship is too big and is very hard to dodge the bullets.

Cosmologicon says ...
Aug 28, 2012 @ 1:25am

The gameplay is about as unoriginal as can be, but you did a great job with the audio and graphics. The characters look really professional, well done! Even though the captions were really badly placed, I liked the jokes. They remind me of email forwards from the old dial-up days. :)

Thank you, there was some. Believe it or not, I've never even played starfox.

I had a really hard time with the dialogue placement :(

Polish is what I went for! There wasn't as much connection as I was hoping to have when I first set out on this adventure. Originally all the dialogue was going to be an epic script that would ultimately be very serious, but time ran out.

Perhaps you can tell me how to reproduce this error, I can get a patch in! I'm glad you liked it.

I agree, I had a few people late development suggest that I make the ship smaller, but unfortunately it was very hard coded, and I ran out of time. I'm glad you liked the art, I'm not much of an artist, but I did what I could!

yeah, if I had more time, I would have fixed it, but I was able to beat the game in play through testing, so i decided to leave it as is.

Yeah, technically the game play is a waved cheap space invaders clone. This LD was more about polish and content though.

The internet is a great place :)

Haha, with some rather blatant UI issues and basic gameplay, I doubt it, but I appreciate the support!

Materie says ...
Aug 28, 2012 @ 3:04pm

So many bullets, and really no way to kill enemy ships without letting them hit you back makes for a not very enjoyable experience. The constant humorous popups makes matters worse, given that they cannot be seen through and cover half the screen, thus making you unable to discern whatever enemy ships are hiding underneath. One final problem is the fact that the enemy fires single color projectiles, which become practically invisible on a red background. You should give them a clear edge with an inverse color so as to make them always visible to the player.

I really liked the fact that you had voice acting, though. :)

LOL, liked it a lot. Funny ass dialog. The gameplay was really well thought out and the progression seemed to be really polished.

Really nice entry!

Aug 29, 2012 @ 7:39pm

Thank you! It was interestingly the easiest to budget time for.

Yeah, UI was an issue for me this game.

Sorry! There seems to be a bug of some sorts. I'll probably branch the repo so I can add some more content to the game.

I wish I had more time for playtesting. The extra health was sort of balances the impossible to dodge bullets. I'm considering slowing the bullets down, and making the ship smaller. And yes, I agree about the bullet coloration.

I'm glad you liked it!

@Barry Abrams

Totally Original(tm)

Damn, nice job! Sounds like an epic game.

The full sound bytes can be found in my dev tree, if you want to hear more;

Check out the t*.ogg's

Believe it or not, I considered slowing down the progression. I've gotten a few, "it's too fast!". I'm very glad you liked it!

Great Job! Loved the dialog, and great job on the whole menu.

I found that in LOVE 0.8.0 if you explicitly set short sound clips to "static" when creating a new source, you don't get the lag slow down. Or maybe I'm wrong, but it seemed that way on my game...

Aug 30, 2012 @ 5:25pm

Merciless barrage of enemies and red bullets makes this a very challenging game. The crew-banter is absolutely hilarious though and it kept me entertained even when the gameplay quite didn't ;)

All in all very nice design and overall presentation in a game that will probably benefit from some balance fixing and enemy diversification.

Aug 30, 2012 @ 5:49pm

Thanks! The menu is available here:

I use it a lot!

The gameplay is rather bland, I agree, but I'm glad the voiceovers kept you entertained!

I've been balancing in the post-compo version, and adding enemy diversification sounds like an awesome idea as well!

Can you describe the crash at all? Is it a hard crash? Can you run the game from terminal? If you download love ( and run the .love with it, does it work?

I've played a while, waiting for some evolution wich can make me smaller or move faster.. I died, unevolved. I'm disappointed, but the narrated dialog worth a second try.

Fun, but the dialog was in a very inconvenient spot.

Sep 3, 2012 @ 11:56pm

Don't know if the error can be caused this way, but I've had the same issue as @dalbinblue: just as the boss was appearing, I lost my second character and got game over.
Anyway, I really liked the UI and audio, though messages kept showing on top of enemies, which was a little irritating. The game is pretty hard, having no real possibility of dodging bullets (they fly too fast), so there's some place for improvement. Overall, it's a nice entry. Good job!

tux died... oh no! I guess I'm terrible at your game :-P

Sep 17, 2012 @ 10:12pm

So hard, I think your game was punishing me for the bad things I've done (how do you know about those?) Seriously this was great, a nice game experience with the extra polish; nice UI, menus, options etc. I really liked the Star Fox team aspect as well, good voice acting and overall characterisation. I always like games with distinctive characters, especially when they have slightly different stats or gameplay.
