August 24th-27th 2012 :: Theme: Evolution
Singularity is a hardcore platformer featuring procedural level generation and multiple mechanics that keep evolving as you beat the levels - challenges are procedurally made on the fly just for you! Success means progress, but are you able to keep up with the evolution? :)
INSTRUCTIONS
-Use the arrows to move and X to jump. The other commands are presented as you have access to them. Just try to get to the end of the levels, and you'll make progress in uncovering the evolution monolith!
-All the levels are proceduraly generated on the fly, so you never play the same level twice
-The objective is to go as far as you can, and let us know where you stopped! :D
This is our 2nd time in Ludum Dare. We challenged ourselves pretty hard on the tech side this time (much more than we planned).
Hope you enjoy!
Pixel Cows is a totally-not-famous indie dev team made of two guys from Brazil. I usually handle design and production, and Joao Pedro (NecroToad) makes the tech magic. Singularity's protagonist and overall design is vaguely based on "The Journey of Eko", our main project (see more at www.pixelcows.com).
Special thanks to Dan Filimon for last minute graphics, Kevin MacLeod at incompetech.com for the great free music, and to our supportive family and friends - you guys are just GREAT! :)
PS: I fixed a game breaking bug that led to game crash, freeze or severe level unbalancing. There are no new features whatsoever, but there IS a new 'difficulty' counter at the upper, righthand part of the screen. It serves no purpose in game, but help you, fellow Ludum Dare judge, to let me know how far you got!

Ops, thanks for letting me know! Fixed it, should be working now. ;)
Wow! A lot of levels! =O
and... damn pterodactyls! xD
Nice game with a very nice concept!
Those pterodactyls are hard, But Fun game, I couldn't get passed the medieval era:(
That was fun. I like how you kept the game in small levels making allowing for quick retries. The music was by far the best part.
This was a nifty little game I got a kick out of. Highlights for me were the art and fast platforming. I felt the best way to play was to mad dash the level, using hearts as it seemed to give me more health frequently enough to do so.
Here is my constructive criticism: you might work on the jump velocity / feel, and also giving the pterodactyls & other level-crossing enemies a different color so that you can see them coming. I felt it frustrating to have random pterodactyls popping out at times. Also, the level design could be more varied in its jump challenges I felt.
Good work, good game.
Overall good work, I enjoyed it.
WWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
AWESOME * 1000!!! I finished the game and I continued playing 4 levels more...
Good job!
Nice game, but when you got the jetpack, the levels become very easy to beat.
Very well made. Great graphics and music and the level generator is pretty solid. A lot of fun.
Nice game, is very fun and very well made. I like the artwork specially. Good work.
Well, first saying that I had some tecnical problems, but I think that isn't even your fault guys.
The game unplayable with windows XP, or an old computer, don't know the exatly reason, because the screen flicker and disappear.
With Windows 7 the game loaded correctly, but it didn't stretch to the screen resolution even being full screen. Another strange thing is that I already started with 4 lives, wich was great because was very difficult at the start.
Now about the game itself. The graphics are great and the music is very appropriate to each era.
Still about the graphics, good choice with the color pallets, making the background very distinct from each other.
Make the character get abilities as you progress was also a clever idea and enemies/obstacles are appropriate for the upgrade you just got.
Great job Pixel Cows!
In the beginning i had to struggle a lot with the controls.
But as soon as you get the jetpack it's very easy.
But you did a great job with the graphics and the level generator.
The game was pretty easy, I actually died only 4 a 5 times. It is a pretty cool though, nice graphics and music.
The controls however were a bit weird, Z and X were fine, but C to shoot was one button too much. I only ran and jumped though, which worked great :P Good job!
Fantastic game. I found it too be a bit too easy once you get the jetpack. and i ran into a small bug where I would get stuck inside the cannons. Other than that though I really enjoyed this.
Hey guys! I'm glad you could attend this LD.
The game is awesome, very challenging and well polished. And it has freaking jetpacks! A must.
The randomly generated levels didn't offer any real challenge, but it's very fun to play and I beat it to the end :D
Great game, just like last LD. I really like you guys' works. Also, making randomly generated levels in a game jam sounds like a lot of work, congrats on that!
Unfortunately I didn't find the game very challenging, which is funny considering how hard you guys' last LD game was, lol. Just running and jumping was enough to finish most levels, but had fun anyway. I played the game before you added the difficulty bar so I can't tell for sure how far I went, but I do remember I only started finding the difficulty level ok much after finishing the story. If I had to change one thing about the game it would certainly be the difficulty.
Another problem I had was that I accidentally skipped every single cutscene by holding the "right" key before the next level started, and as a result, I only noticed I had a jetpack 4 or 5 levels after acquiring it ._.
But nevertheless, great game overall, and very well-polished!
Thanks everyone for the great feedback! :D
Pedro Chambers, indeed it took a lot of time to build the level generator itself, so undortunately we didn't have the time to playtest the game beginning to end too many times... Also, the first version we submitted was crashing in many machines and we turned off the loop that generates the ceiling, which allowed for the exploit of jetpacking over the obstacles. The bug wasn't there after all, so we placed the ceiling loop back, but depending on when you played, you may have downloaded the no-ceiling version - I'm sorry for that! The version that is currently uploaded doesn't have neither of these problems.
Thanks everyone once again for the great feedback. It's a true pleasure to be jamming with you guys! :D
@pixel_cows
Good game! Fun and addictive because of level generation and audio. But I think that weapon must evolve too. So at the second world it must be sword for example... Also pterodactyl is looking strange in the future world. Anyway good job!
Very well done graphics! I love procedural content, so i liked this game, the only thing i can say is that controls not always respond well
After all those positive comments I'd love to play the game, unfortunately it won't run under WINE because it quits with an "off screen: invalid drawable" message. What is it supposed to mean? Maybe I can hack around...
Looking at the screenshots, I have missed a lot by not being good enough. it looks very good. I also like that you made procedural levels, but some iterations were impossible for me.
I tried to play the Game on Linux (no Windows here at the moment) by using Wine.
It seems to work perfectly at first. Graphics, controls and everything worked.
But every level was the same as the one before. No enemys just going from left to right. I was a little confused but then looked to this site and saw the Screenshots. They look great.
I think I should play it on a windows machine when i have access to it again :)
Really nice. Hope to see your "The Journey of Eko" debut :), you guys are amazing.
Thanks guys for the awesome feedback! We thought of this from the beginning as an experiment, and we're absolutely amazed that so many people can enjoy it. Thanks!
Datw, this is one of the most encouraging compliments we've ever received! Thanks, buddy, we're working really hard to live up to the expectations! :D
Great game but i was expecting a bit more. Still it's one of best games i've seen in LD24.
Very good! Nice gfx and music. And I'm curious about the random level generation. I am a big fan of procedurally generated stuff! :D
Tks, guys!
RawBits, the random level generation is surprisingly simple, actually! We've explained it all in a post in our blog, you might wanna take a look! http://www.pixelcows.com/2012/09/the-singularity-arrived-grab-your-clubs.html
This is fantastic. A very impressive piece of work for just two people, even for a jam entry. Not very innovative (apart from the procedural levels), but a great game overall.

Can't open the .zip! Was corrupted!
Seems a nice game! Greetings from Brazil! ;)
