Block Shoot - KhaoTom - Jam Entry

    Ludum Dare #24 - Evolution
    By Edwin DeNicholas (KhaoTom)

    How To Play
You are the circle, shoot the blocks. They evolve if they get away. Survivors mingle traits so over time the most successful (those that exit the gameboard) should have traits that the player wasn't able to deal with.

    - Keyboard: WASD
    - Controller: Left Stick or D-Pad

    - Keyboard: Arrow Keys
    - Controller: Button 0-3 (A, B, X, Y)

    Move Slower
    - Keyboard: Hold either shift key
    - Controller: Hold either bumper

    Pause Game
    - Keyboard: P or Tab
    - Controller: Start button

    Quit Game (Stand-alone only)
    - Pause the game, and then press Escape Key or Back button.

Resolution & Control Config (Stand-alone only)
    - Hold ALT while starting the program.

Created in Unity with Blender for graphics and LabChirp for sound.

I think the player moves too fast, and is not very easy to see once enemies and bullets are everywhere - that said, I really liked the game the second I started :D

Since there is still time left in the jam, I made some quick edits. The evolution system wasn't even working as intended, it is now. Also slowed down the player movement and attempted to make the player more visible by limiting the colors the enemies can be a bit. Also I had hardcoded a random.seed for testing purposes and forgot to take that out.

    Really cool - Like a sort-of lo-fi Smash TV.

Good game, reminds me to Ultratron.

Really enjoyed this one, although I don't really see it fitting the theme. I also enjoyed the controls a lot!

The blocks evolve over time, survivors pass on their traits, so theoretically, the ones that exit the playspace are more successful and eventuall ythe population of blocks will have traits that the player either 1) was unable to deal with or 2) preferred by letting them live.

That is... if you survive long enough.

Pretty cool, although the effects of the evolution are not always immediately evident, and the shooting noise gets to me a little after a while

The shooting sound was annoying as %@#$ but besides that I enjoyed it a lot :)

Good central idea, but not very apparent in actual gameplay. Sound gets irritating... Gameplay wise it's fun, graphically fine too.

Fun game. Your Kongregate link is malformed, FYI

Pretty effective! I like the idea of the enemies adapting to playstyle.

This was quite a lot of fun - fast paced and frenetic. I enjoyed the retro sound effects too. I'm not sure I buy the evolution gimmick, but I did notice the blocks becoming more advanced after playing for a while (firing more complex patterns of buttons and moving more evasively).
