August 24th-27th 2012 :: Theme: Evolution
[UPDATE - 08/28/2012]
Since many are, with reason, complaining about the game being unplayable, I'm adding a "post-compo version 1.01", with only two modifications: I added a demo and a "keys pressed HUD" (only activated during the demo, though).
Even so, I know there are two small problems with this demo:
1- since I mostly tap "x" to attack, it sometimes isn't shown...
2- I used floating point timers in my game for calculating when the next action should be performed... but that can cause some inconsistency if the framerate when playing is diferente from the one when recording... (since the replay is frame-by-frame, I think...)
At least, I finally understood why the gameplay fells so terrible to many... xD

A flash adventure about a strange creature that can actively modify itself, given enough sample (that's, kill enough enemies and you get abilities =D).
Instructions:
arrow-keys - move
x - attack
up key - jump (when enabled)
c - run (when enabled)
k - stats screen
p - pause

Didn't really get it. Do you have to eat the purple things to be able to jump? The level design could have been better if that was the case as it just led you downwards but then you couldn't get back up again. a small flat room filled with just enough enemies to enable you to evolve and get the 'jump' so you could escape may have been better.
@Vordux: Time (and lack of ability xD) didn't allow me to try and make some more sprites/animation... Though the gameplay makes sense to me, I was afraid it wouldn't be quite clear for other...
Also, you can see what games I've played most through my style. xD
@turnip: That just show that it was indeed bad design... It's intentional for you to go downward and there isn't enough enemies to evolve. But, they respawn... I should have made the respawn time faster, so it wouldn't cause confusion...
Hey man! I think the level design could have been a little more friendly, especially if you go down and are still unable to jump. I felt it was a little too hard already in the beginning. I liked the style!
I felt the character movement is a little slow for me!
Good job there!
I really struggled with the level layout in relation to my abilities. The attacking seemed to hurt me as often as it hurt the purple things.
As said before, EVO for SNES must have been your inspiration here =) The one major fault with this is the game design. Being forced down into the pit with enemies spawning everywhere and no real chance to defend yourself is a bit harsh.
The pixelart was really good. The hearts could have used some extra work since I couldn't really tell how much health I had left.
All in all, good job, it was a solid effort =)
@Brassawiking: Wow, now I see it!! I thought that leading the player into a place where he would be able to kill enemies and evolve would be a nice idea... (I really though that =X)
Thanks for all the comments. It's really great to know what you all thought about the game. It also helps me understand which choices where good and which were bad. =D
It was difficult to see how much health I had left - it's hard to see the difference between a full and empty heart. Other than that a nice little game, I'd like to see it developed further after the compo.
The damage system ruined it a bit, I mostly got hurt by attacking more than I hurt others. Otherwise, a nicely put together game.
Looked cute. Couldn't get my dino to eat any of the enemies. Not sure what I was doing wrong. Kept pressing X.
Kinda unplayable... would've been nicer if you had jump to start :) I was really excited that it would have been more like the old school E.V.O. Search for Eden game -- it looked like a really good start! Maybe bit off more than is possible in 48 hours...?
Pretty unplayable without the jump. X didn't seem to have any effect on anything I came across. Could have potential but needs work. Unfortunately 48hrs is not long..
Sorry, I couldn't really figure this one out. I just kept getting stuck in the bottom of the level. How do you jump? Nice work on the character art.
Really like the pixel art. Even with the demo I kept dying! Could well be me being rubbish though!
I like the concept but the attacking wasn't very clear so found myself dying before gaining enough experience to learn the jump ability. I hope you keep working on this game as the potential is clearly there.
The sprites and the music were good and it is a fun concept. As everyone else has said the level design was confusing, but not having any way to regain health killed it for me. I managed to evolve to jump a couple times but I would only have one heart left by that point.
@Wydra: I noticed the game was probably very dificult... I was even going to add checkpoints, so you wouldnUnfortunately
@Wydra: I noticed the game was probably very dificult... I was even going to add checkpoints... Unfortunately, I couldn't fix some bugs in time and had to remove it from the game... >_<
Again, thanks for each and every comment. =D
Really, it helps a lot to know what I should (or must xD) improve. =]
Nice graphics, but i thought the movement was a little slidey. Also super hard! (I couldn't even make it to the jump)
Not sure if I was playing right. Felt super hard. Couldn't evolve to jump. Wasn't sure if I should be running from those fruit things or attacking them.
Kind of simple and confusing. I couldn't even figure out how to get to the jump. Do you just need to eat a lot?
I'm sorry, I managed to get the jump, but I keep dying.... Your game is really hard...
Nice game. May be will be better, if add the indication of pressed keys, like in demo.
I loved the music and graphics! The game play was fun too. My only complaint was it was hard to tell if you were getting hurt by the enemies or hurting them.
great art and music. could use something on screen to show how far to the next ability rather then having to open the menu. ok game otherwise, just really hard.
Controls felt a little laggy/frustrating, but other than that it was pretty cool.
I didn't really understand what you were supposed to do. But cute game :)

Nice graphics, looked like a GBA game, which I thought was cool. A greater visual representation of what was occurring would have been nice, as it was somewhat confusing at times.
A good game, nice to see how you've created your style.
