Mutasite 1991: Attack of the Mutagenic Parasites

by Cake_Catastrophe - 48 Hour Compo Entry

Too ill to explain. You mutate, parasites, top-down shooting. It's a game, play it.

Nice Gauntlet-like game. Good job!

Really cool title screen. The game was solid enough, but it lacked something to make me really like it.

I tried to run this under wine on linux, but the mouse got stuck, and I wasn't able to progress. Sorry!

Finally beat it. man that speed kill is like, "ok, just shoot me now cause i'll never make it." it was better just to run through the rooms than to focus on killing. You got random genetic improvements, is that evolution? :D That final room was hard! took quite a bunch of tries. needs more though, more more more!

@raohmaru: Thanks!

@JaJ: Understandable, I felt like I got a bit too bogged down in making the mechanics solid. I'm definetly going to be a bit more experimental with my next LD game.

@josefnpat: Sucks to hear that. I'll probably use Love2D or HTML5 for my next game.

@commanderstitch: Glad you enjoyed it enough to reach the end! Yup, you receive a random mutation each level and if you die you get a different one. When you complete each level, the mutation you completed it with becomes permanent. So the mutations that are most helpful live on, while ones that get you killed die off (essentially, survival of the fittest traits). To the best of my layman's knowledge, that's evolution.

Also, apologies if the abrupt ending is a bit unrewarding. I had this completely gonzo plot in mind, but I was struck down by flu on Sunday and wasn't up to writing it.

Fun game! Needs some audio for sure, though. I'm glad you put a safeguard in there to prevent having 0 speed, but getting -spd over and over was pretty frustrating. Maybe give the player one of two choices when a stat evolve happens?

I think the issue with speed is that the minimum is too low. Below about 50 speed it's just too slow. If I'd had the time, I would have adjusted it so the minimum (10) was equal to what 50 currently is.

A solid game, I got about 6 levels in before I could progress no further.the problem was how you got the mutations. Although you are correct strong mutations should stay with the player, this only works where you have a group present actively competing against each other. Otherwise you just get a mutation that was good enough for the easier level.

I ended up with no con, no life, and no speed. Yet an ungodly range. It basically made it impossible. If you wanted players to really evolve, you should give them all the traits, and then permenantly assign the one that made them complete a level the fastest. This would give a better 'natural selection'.

Good Gauntlet-clone, but needs audio and few new tiles. Nice job!

Nice gameplay. I did not see any effect of the gained mutatations though. Even a simple sound effects (SFXR-like) would add to the experience.

Good game. Gave up after a long time with speed=10 which was tedious to move, and made the room impossible. I really like the title screen.
