August 24th-27th 2012 :: Theme: Evolution
I didn't find much inspiration in the Evolution theme, so after wasting a few hours procrastinating over what to make I decided to try my hand at the 1000 Kittens theme instead!
I'm going to claim my tenuous link to Evolution is that you play a highly evolved problem solving cat that must rescue all the lesser evolved problem solving kittens! ;)
UPDATE: I've uploaded a DX9 version now.

Likewise, it crashed after pressing space on the menu screen for me.
(Windows 7 64-Bit with Intel graphics)
Doh :( Sounds like the audio is crashing it, I've uploaded and updated version that disables audio if it's missing something.
Also just noticed it was starting XAudio in debug mode, hopefully these fixes should stop the crashing :)
That's one difficult game, I got stuck around the 29 kittens mark. Good fun though even if the link to evolution is pretty feeble!
Can't start the game, missing d3d10 (direct X 10 I suppose). Screenshot looks nice though :)
Challenging game with a throwback to the likes of difficulty of VVVVVV at times.
Graphics were nice and consistent and the audio compliment the overall retro and simplistic style well.
Gameplay mechanics were balanced out well and the cats and player cat behaved well in my favor when precision was needed at certain areas that were challenging.
WOW that is one awesome game! By far my favorite until now. Getting all the kittens is hard but doable =)
I love the feeling and handling. Superb graphics. Lovely sounds.
Thanks, I enjoyed this.
Fun to play, well executed. I like the graphics. I got stuck in the tunnel with the spikes.
One of my favorite games so far I only got up to 26 or so kittens but I will come back and play it again I think.
With a DX9 version that (fortunately) works for me, I was able to play this. There were a few minor rendering glitches but I'd put that down to it being the DX9 version.
Anyway, to the point:
Gameplay wise this was really fun- a simple platformer done very well, and balanced- not too difficult either. The difficulty curve took a MASSIVE spike just before the end but that's fine haha. Gameplay wise all I can say is its too short... but that is understandable in the time.
This is great! A bit short, and there's a lot of room for adding variety on top of your 4 or so graphics, but what you do have is good, and the physics are smooth. I got all 60 cats. I liked the trail behind you.
Got up to 26 and gave up. The pixelkittens are lovely, more soundeffects would have been nice and some help. It took a while until I figured out I could do double and walljumps.
Good game!
@Spaceoff Thanks for pointing out the glitch with the DX9 version, pixel centres changed between DX9 and DX10, and I got the conversion backwards :)
Too short and hardcore... Gameplay is standard and reminds me meatboy or dustforce. Where is the evolution, man?
One of the best games here, lots of re playability and your source code is educational.
@moonmagic Which DLL were you missing? If it's one of the DX9, or XAudio DLLs you should be able to get them by installing the latest DX runtime http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=35
Very fun, but no theme connection (as you said). Some of those spike pits can be navigated because you stand on corners safely! It's the only way I got through.
I'd of given it a higher overall score if it had more to do with the theme and didn't require a glitch to get through the game but was very fun.
I'll try this again later, really enjoying it, I like a hard game, and the platforming really reminded me of cave story, which I love. Perfectly simple graphics too.
I like how you only tell the player that he can jump and force him to try something new through the level design.
Totally off-theme but who cares! The difficulty DOES spike pretty hard at the wall climb, and just after, but you really nailed that addictive instant-respawn meat boy / vvvvvv gameplay. The bupbupbupbupbupbup sound of the cats got a bit grating. I didn't get to the end, but damn I wanted to. Good Job!

Loving the screenshot. Unfortunately I'm on a DX9 card (on Windows 7, with DX11 installed) and cannot play it. I guess I'll have to wait.
