Next Generation

by r3d5 - Jam Entry

Here it is. Very rough, but I'll be updating it.

Web Build will always be most up to date.

Next Generation is a turn based life simulator game. Your goal is to survive the ever changing world for 13 turns by choosing mates with traits you expect to be beneficial.

Move with the WASD keys.
Press Enter for next Stage.

Mouse over objects for more info.

Attacking and mating is done by clicking close by organisms. Make sure your Reproduction types (Sexual & Asexual) are compatible.

During your turn's stages, make your moves quick and keep an eye on your Energy bar. If it's low, find nutrients. Your energy bar does not decreases on the Ai's turn.

Your energy meter depletes the longer you take your turn. Either make quicker decisions or invest time to find Nutrients to replenish it.

Always seek mates, if you fall behind, other organisms will become strong than you and attack you.

Much of the art was not done by me (because I'm not an artist at all). In fact, all the 2d cell art is pulled from this wonderful TED Education video, "The Wacky History of Cell Theory" which can be seen here

"The Wacky History of Cell Theory" is a lesson by Lauren Royal-Woods and was animated by Augenblick Studios (

I could not figure out how to choose to attack or mate. I could only move around and starve to death. :(

It seems that the game does not wait for you to make your decisions as it continuously depletes your life. This does not make it easy for someone who is exploring and who does not know how to play the game yet.

@axcho Attacking and mating is done by clicking close by organisms.

@Accidental Rebel
That was your energy meter, it depletes the longer you take your turn. So, you would have to either make quicker decisions or invest time to find Nutrients to replenish it.

Sorry for the confusion everyone, next build will include more clear instructions.

I really like how you used the theme - I like the evolution tree as well

@sampyxis aww thank you! I really wanted to nail down an evolution simulation feature rather than a eugenics mechanic (alows the user to choose traits) since that's the way life has been working as far as we know.

I couldn't figure out the controls, but I really liked the concept.

After reading the instructions I had issues with controls. Interesting concept but the fun factor just wasn't there for me. The interface and interactions could use some work.

@csanyk @Gryxitl what particular part of the controls caused issues? Was it the movement, the mouseover, the clicking?

same as @axcho ,and controls does not respond to what i want... the text got rotated (inverted) and cant read.
The potential is enormous, dont extinct the game, evolve it!:)

@juaxix Thank you! I'm planning on adding mechanics to be unlocked with the skill tree.

Also, I think I found the bug for the controls. Should be fixed during my lunch break :)
