Targeted Evolution

by johnfn - 48 Hour Compo Entry

Hi! This is a silly game involving combining evolution cards and giving your character special abilities. Your goal: Combine all the elemental cards together! What kind of powers could that give you?

I hope you enjoy!

There also might be an easter egg hidden somewhere. :)

The only thing holding this game back is some wonky physics glitches and problems. Specifically I can get boxes stuck in walls and once I got it stuck in the ground. The game however has a nice charm to it and I'm a sucker for exploration games. Could of benefited from some music and a less annoying contact with the ground sound effect.

Great humor here. I laughed when I received the "Jumper". At that very moment I was thinking--"why the hell can't I jump!"

Woah, you even set up a walkthrough for it. Great job man, I liked it!
Right away I laughed on the first lines of dialog (won't spoil for others). Great humor :)
Great level design, awesome job on the little art! The feeling of the controls is just great, they're very responsive, fast and smooth.

Damn I just got in a part where I got the second card but I just can't equip it, is that supposed to happen? :( Couldn't find out what to do. Anyways, I really loved the game :) Great Job!

Very good overall job :)
The card selection interface is hard to use though, the currently selected card is not really obvious... Also, support for multiple controls is nice when using letters such as Z/X, for foreign keyboards ;)

This was really funny, and feels like a proper complete game. One of the best I've played so far!

Some things I noticed while playing: The sound effect for collision is really loud, had to turn down my headphones so my eardrums wouldn't pop. The movement is a bit slippery and physics feel wonky... boxes slide around when I'm standing on top of them. Also, the evolution card selection screen is really difficult to use. I usually have no idea which one I have highlighted and only manage to pick the card I want through blind trial and error.

I maintain that walking on blocks to push them is a feature, not a bug. After all, how else are you going to get them out of a corner? ;-)

Really though I agree with all of your criticisms. I definitely messed up the evolution selection screen. Most of the other stuff you guys are mentioning are things I wanted to fix but simply ran out of time. Such is Ludum Dare. :)

Fun game here!
-I liked the smooth scrolling between, the screens, the space background, pixel artwork
-liked evolving the blocks, the card system was a little confusing - was hard to see what card was selected, etc
-Some of the "dialog" was pretty funny when talking to the wizard.
-Sound was a little obnoxious

Hey guys, 1 thing - if you stop before the ending, that's fine, but check out this image (SPOILERS) and see if it changes your mind ;-)

Also @deepnight, that was something I did not consider. I will definitely keep that in mind in the future. Thanks.

Great humour, what really made the game stand out was the ability to combine your power-ups to form different powers. The game has charm, but the one negative thing I can say is that it would have been even better with a good sound track and a less annoying sound from hitting the floor.

Everything I wanted to say has already been said. Dammit all! Spectacular humor. Cracked up on quite a few occasions. :P

Really great job. I thought the level design was excellent. The puzzles were challenging enough to be satisfying without being frustrating. I really like exploration, and that's hard to pull off in Ludum Dare. And of course the dialogue was excellent! The only downsides is the controls weren't very tight, and the selection mechanism was a little cumbersome. Overall a lot of fun to play!

Very fun! I had bumped into an issue where I couldn't switch to the electric ability. All I could use is freeze and smash. Very confusing.

Nice job!

"That is the dumbest thing I've heard all day" line was funny. The falling on the ground sound is really punchy and loud, hard to deal with.

I liked how the Professor mentioned keys and the guy didn't know what he was saying. That was hilarious. Great game, 5 for humor.

By the way, I noticed you gave me a "Good Samaritan" award. What was that meant for? :)

I have played over 40 games so far, and this is the first one that really made me laugh. The humor is funny and not forced. I liked the game a lot, but sometimes I got a bit confused by the card selection screen.

Digging this one. Liking the sharp and colourful 1:1 pixel art, I haven't seen any other entries with a similar look as of yet. The amount of detail put into the graphics with a complete lack of effort to add any animations adds to the games humour. The movement feels a little hyperactive, but isn't dodgy in a way which makes the game irritating.

The dialogue was quirky and felt like a personification of the internet, it made me laugh in places. I especially liked the little poker face on the idiot protagonist's dialogue avatar:

There were a few minor bugs in a couple of places but nothing that really spoilt the game. I did find the card selection menu incredibly annoying, and found myself flicking through it confused to what was selected or not, but it made a bit more sense once I had 3 cards. The walkthrough came in useful when I got distracted at one point and ended up confused to what I was supposed to be doing.

Nice one @johnfn.

The card selection menu was fiddly, but the overall gameplay was really nicely thought out. Good sense of humour throughout.

Pretty decent platrformer with a well done evolution puzzle mechanics. The controls were a bit slow reacting in my case (Firefox/Win).
Funny dialogues.

Nice humor, and decent game all-round! I felt the ending was a bit abrupt and the movement was a little frustrating at times. I also wasn't too keen on the audio but apart from that it was quite nicely put together and a fun one to play.

Ahaha very nice! the controls weren't so good, but that didn't made it less fun! I found the easter egg.

Sep 3, 2012 @ 1:13pm

Haha, Amazing. I got the egg it was saying to screenshot, then I... then... ROAR. Overall, this was really good. I actually chuckled at the first bit of dialog when you talk to the Professor about not being able to jump. Only downside was the sticky physics. Also it didn't make sense that if I wasn't currently freezing, but there was ice on the ground, pushing blocks wouldn't work. Overall though, nice job!

Suddenly I'm getting a lot of comments about bad controls. Um. That's odd, because I didn't change the game. Maybe it's because you guys read my postmortem and knew all of the common pain points now? :P Anyway, that is helpful, thank you for letting me know.

I'm also exceedingly happy that some of you guys got to the easter egg. I wasn't sure if anyone would get it!

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Good game! There's a great progression here.

A few minor criticisms: the card-choosing interface was a bit awkward; I got stuck both times when I needed to talk to the professor to progress, because I was used to using the 'x' key with him by then; and the sound effect when you land after a jump was a bit annoying. Those are all pretty minor though - and other those, you nailed it!

I liked this game, the only thing that was annoying was the jumping sound. I had to turn my pc sound all the way down and it was still too loud.
It was fun though, and creative. Card selection was a little difficult at times.
