by ChainedLupine - Jam Entry

The basic idea is that you are a jetpack wearing redneck with a shotgun, whose trailer home is being invaded by space alien kudzu. The kind that rapidly evolves to resist your weed killers. Yeah, that kind.

A/D to move left/right
W to thrust upwards with jetpack
S to shop (only if in front of trailer)
F to activate fumigator bomb (limited supply)
1/2/3 to swap between weedkiller types (buy more in shop!)
R to restart a level quickly

Destroy the beating kudzu hearts in order to progress to the next level. You'll need the right kind of weed killer to kill the vines that the hearts generate. Green works on green vines, blue on blue vines, and so on. You can use the wrong sort of weed killer, but it takes 3 hits instead of one to kill a vine segment.

This is a very interesting game. I like how the green "plant" stuff only grows when it is attached to the core flower thingny. It gets really difficult with the stronger grey leaves growing. I may have missed something, but what can the coins be used for?

Such an addictive game, and such a simple idea but one I've never thought of, I really did enjoy this game

Very nice game how it is and it was unfortunate that you were not able to put in other features you wanted to add. I had one question though: Was the core of the plant supposed to automatically be destroyed by the vines being destroyed?

I beat all 5 levels, woot!

Awesome take on the theme. Great audio, excellent graphics, and very solid controls. Gameplay was great. With another 10 or 20 hours thrown into this, you'll have an excellent game on your hands. Great work!

Wow, great game. Awesome graphics, gameplay, audio - everything! Only thing I noticed that seemed like a bug or something was that I beat two levels without actually killing all the hearts - somehow they were destroyed on their own or something. Anyway, great job!

That was fun -- it was neat how the vines kept growing and attacking.

@chamberlainpi: Go back to the trailer and press S. There's a shop that lets you buy things. :)

@Justin Kibbe: Correct! This is intentional, though I toned it down in the final version. The idea being that, if the core is too heavily defended, you can just sit back and kill encroaching vines. It also prevents the player from just coin-farming infinitely.

@kato9: Not a bug, intended behavior. But if you played an early version (before jam submission deadline), then the kudzu hearts would blow up too early. That's been re-tweaked.

Hmmm... Well made game=) Nice pixels and gameplay.
Can't beat blue bullshit at third level. It has many HP and grow too quick.

Excellent game! Really fun to play. Don't actually have a whole lot of critique except that the trajectory of the coins is super irritating, they always seem to fly over my head making me waste time and life picking them up before they vanish. And that might be intentional. :P

This was fun! It really captured the feel of battling overgrown vegetation. The upgrades all felt good and the feeling and strategy of trying to stem the vines was unique. Great job!

Aug 28, 2012 @ 9:48pm

Really great. There are no big flaws, although I wish there were more options for upgrades. That's super nitpicky though, especially for a 72 hours game. Really awesome work!

Fantastic! One of my favourites. Smooth gameplay, nice retro graphics and sound effects, and a very Duke Nukem style mood to it. Great job!

Really good game I think. One thing that bugged me a bit is that when I'm shooting directly at a kudzu heart, half of my bullets still don't hit it because it keeps growing so fast. It kinda feels to me like at that point I should be allowed to just kill it. Maybe if hitting the heart slowed down its growth for just a tiny moment? Unless that breaks some balance I'm not observing, of course.

Great arcade game. Somehow the shop didn't open consistently for me.
