August 24th-27th 2012 :: Theme: Evolution
Sustenance is a timed survival game where resources are limited and you may not be the only one with an appetite.
OBJECTIVE - Stay alive as long as possible.
CONTROLS - Arrow Keys for movement and either ASD or ZXC to expel colors Red Green and Blue respectively
This was my first Ludum Dare and I am glad I was able to get something done to show. I didn't complete all that I would of liked but I learned a lot and I'm looking forward to Ludum Dare 25!!!

Nice mechanic. Music would have been nice as well. good first game. well done.
Funny fart sound. And effects not bad (I must learn unity too i hope it not such difficult).
Good idea, instead of the looming unavoidable menace, what if the predators were swimming around to, but only saw you when you stood out, so when the color changes it is more of a mad dash to match.
Also having more than 4 background colors would be cool and making it so you just have to be close to the background color to be hidden.
I really like the mechanic of blending into the background. Very interesting. My biggest gripe is with the movement, I had a hard time controlling my character over short distances. Grumblings aside, great work!
Thanks everyone for the feedback... :)
@ sgehlich - Unity has a great community behind it and tutorials are easy to find.
@camdensegal - I was thinking of something similar but didn't feel I had time to implement it. I may redo the project with different enemies. Thanks for the input. :)
@headchant - I am not sure what the problem is, I just retested the links and they seem to work fine.
Why can't I move? I think the game would be really really interesting if I was able to do so.
It was a bit hard at first because I kept having to remember which keys expelled which color. Although I really think this game would be 100x more fun if I could just move!
Then it would be you would try to seek out bacteria which are the colour of the background, and perhaps the colours would be dynamically generated. Could be loads of fun!
So yeah, good concept!
I really like the mechanic of changing colour to be camoflaged (spelt that wrong?), great work for your first jam.
If you develop it further I'd try it out with lots of enemies that you have to avoid but a lower percentage of them chase you the closer you get to the colour of the background. Maybe you can eat them when they can't see you? I don't know, I think this idea's got legs (pun - sort of).
Anyway, knowing that I had to get to the right colour did a good job of making me scared while I played because I don't know how to make most colours!
Hey, your idea is REALLY original man, i LOVED the concept, I just feel you could explain it a little better to the players since I took like 3 plays to finally grasp the concept.
But dude, in 48hours that's really a damn nice job, great idea and implementation! It just needs polish now, and I really think you should do it!
Also, thanks for your comment on my game.
Cheers!
the sound is nice and the theme is really good. nicely done.
The game was possibly a bit easy, as gathering all the little blobs on the screen wasn't a problem. I think what might have made it more challenging is if your expulsions seeped out over time. As it stands there's no reason not to eat everything in sight becuase you can just blast it all out of your character instantly.
Cool idea with the colors, great job for your first entry. See you again in 25 :-)
Simple yet very interesting idea, it's the kind of game that makes you think "why nobody ever thought of this yet?!". Congrats!
Really nice idea for game and funny sounds. This could be improved slightly because currently it's a bit too dull, you are just waiting for background to change.
I was a bit confused on what to do at first, but once I understood, it was really neat! Definitely helped me bolster my color theory =)
Brilliant implementation of the theme. I love the sound effects too.
Little boring when waiting for the background but interesting concept ;)
Great concept. If you continue to work on this and bring the player in gradually it I'd love to play it again.
Wow that is so simple and yet so entertaining. My eyes are hurtint though but it was totally wort it! :)
I really liked the idea of your game. It was a little bit difficult to figure it out at first. Perhaps a meter indicating how close you are to the desired color would be helpful, and you could give the player some wiggle room there. I think your game could have benefited from music as well. Well done overall and congrats on your first LD.
Trying to blend in is a cool idea, but the game becomes dull very quickly. I stayed alive for 5-6 minutes or so, and was left with a feeling of "Why did I keep playing for so long?" :)
Good job on the execution, I just wish it had a bit more to it.
199 seconds. Controls are nice and smooth, but the game gets a bit repetitive after a while. In particular when you go from e.g. magenta to red, you just fart out blue, but then you have to just sit and wait for the shark to come. Also, I'm not sure if RGB colour mixing makes sense to anyone but programmers... maybe you could add hints to the colour bars as to where they should be? Oh, and the sounds are great :D
Like the concept, but a bit repetitive : maybe having to make a specific color would have been more fun / challenging
Woha, really nice idea! I just need a reminder wich show me what colours are needed for mimetize in the background, instead of showing me only after that, but it's really a good game!

Interesting concept. The game became a bit dull while waiting for the background to change colour, maybe a couple of enemies hunting you would be a nice addition?
Other than that, I really liked how those small colour blobs moved around, they felt organic somehow.
