Darwin's Turtle Race Challenge - endermath - 48 Hour Compo Entry

Help Darwin prove his theory by breeding the perfect racing turtle.

    How to start the game:
Windows: Just run the darwinLD24.exe file. (If the windows version doesn't work, please let me know in the comments and specify your windows version.)

OS/X: Go to the folder darwinLD24/ and double-click on the file called darwinLD24. (I think the OS/X version requires Mac OS X 10.6 or later.)

Source: To run from source you need Python 2.7 and pygame.

    How to play:
Arrow-keys and return to select in menus. Space activates Leaf boost during races.

TIPS: Try experimenting when breeding. It may lead to unexpected results :)

This game is fun. I think the turtle breeding is my favorite part. I would love to see a more polished version of this. <3

I liked the game, although I think that it is either too hard or too random :-) Also, props for the Mac-exclusive version, I've never seen one before :-)

This is so much fun! :D I love this game... and the turtles are so cute~! I love turtles. Little Darwin riding his turtles is so silly, it's a fantastic but simple concept, I love pixel art, and such nice music... you really can't go wrong.
    Especially since i have a Mac. :D

Wish I could have played this but I don't have a Mac:( I'll check back to see if the Win version is available yet.

I ended up always breeding the last two turtles. Some kind of incest malus would have been great.

This was awesome. I used my MacBook Pro but if windows users are determined to play it they could jump on torrentz.eu and search for a Mountain Lion VMWare Image and VMware.

one of the best games i've played so far, the aesthetic as well as the audio and gameplay leads to a cool authentic retro game, i really liked it :D

This game is fun :) I love the turtle breeding. Not sure if I understood how it works though. Is there a way to actually win the game?

    Aug 30, 2012 @ 7:28pm

Really loved the concept (Almost the same as mine, lol) but your execution was much much better. I love the humor of using turtles and the simple menus

Thank you all for the comments! I'm glad you like it (it's my first LD game) :D

cappelnord: By breeding a very low level turtle with a higher level one can sometimes get a really good turtle as a result (better than you would get by breeding equal level ones). This is kind of a secret ;)

Danvil: Yes there is a way to win the game: Breed a turtle with all three stats maxed out! :)

    Aug 30, 2012 @ 11:27pm

Yeah, Danvil! You win by getting all the stats to 99.

I haven't had this much fun making turtles bang since I got the April O'Neil action figure.

Fantastic. A very complete experience. I adore this to bits. The only thing I can think of is that the game gave out too many leaves, which made it more on the easy side. Bravo!

Fun and addicting. I think it could have used a bit more variety, after a while, it was the same few steps over and over again.

I have no idea why, but I kept playing this until most of my turtles werre awesome green beasts. This is an awesome take on the evolution theme, with a simple yet addictive gameplay.

Not only the graphics, but also the kinda naive gameplay and the UI give this game an authentic retro feel that seem quite polished. Congrats!
