Collect Cells and Grow!
///please read///
"Sorry about the music I should have read the rules better, but now I know for the next time:)"
//Controls//
WASD to move
Left mouse to shoot (Later On)
mouse to control direction (Sorry for Crapiness)
if you have trouble playing it, you can download blender (FREE), and open the growtitle.blend file. Press P to start the game Engine.
This was my First LudumDare and I enjoyed it! I changed My Idea twice so I only had a couple of hours left to make this game. The source is included in the games zip folder.
There was a couple of bugs that showed up after compiling but I don't have time to fix them, but if I can I will.
known Bugs include:
- Getting injured and no longer being able to defend yourself
- Exit screen and the next level screen, occasionally the mouse jumps off screen and cant be found.
- Rays don't always point where there supposed to.
If you have blender on your computer you can open the GrowTitle.blend and avoid these bugs, and also run the game on different operating systems!

Seems like fun if I knew what to do. moving was a bit counterintuitive and I didn't know what to do next.
Worked fine for me on Win7. The mouse was a bit tricky but overall nice.
Really sorry but it just didn't work for me, the mouse cursor stopped moving almost straight away and I couldn't do anything. Seems like you have to bump into the other cells to grow, I liked that idea
Had difficulty with the controls. The big issue here was that the player could catch up to the mouse, so I ended up having to keep picking it up to move. The mouse should just point you in the direction you want to go and lead the player's movement. Also, halfway through level 3 I lost my beam attack and couldn't complete the level.
kevincorrigan: Thanks for trying my game! I fixed the link, if you care to try again.
Also, any tips for running this via wine / linux?
interesting idea and fantastic music, with some more playtime and polish it woul have been nearly perfect
Thanks for the comments, if you want to play on a different operating system, you could download blender(Free Program!) and Run The GrowTitle.blend and it should work without many of the bugs.
The download was huge! Plus for minimalist aesthetics and music. Idea itself might have been good too, but controls make this very hard to play.
Well, it looks like fun, but as mentioned before, I couldn't click the continue button, because the cursor disappeared.
Also, is 50mb really necessary?
Ideas looks awesome. On windows7 it freezes when I click continue after level 1.
Originally I felt very negatively about this game, but it grew on me XD. It's sad you didn't have to make more.
A few comments:
A little bit of text saying which keys to press would have been a life saver. The mouse pointer should also move as the user does. When you complete a level, the game lags horribly when trying to click the 'Yes' button. You can just wonder of the green square and get lost.
I was going to say the music was great, but I noticed that you wrote 'Music Provided'. Does this mean you did not author it? I'm not sure if this is against the rules or not, but I personally feel it defeats the object, even if you do have rights to use it.
Not sure if it's ok to use external music in a compo entry. Besides to that the music bloats the download (39mb music). Liked the mechanic of sticking the blocks on me but sadly after the first level the game got stuck and I couldn't click anything.
ya sorry about all the bugs, and the mouse, I think its ok to use the music because its publicly available and was available before the start, but if not oh well, next time I'll hopefully be able to get more done.
I'm fairly certain using premade music isn't allowed, but oh well... The game's pretty buggy and jerks around a lot, and that can get kind of annoying. The concept was neat, though.
Have to vote you down because you broke the compo rules by using external music. If it was a jam entry, would have been different.
The last level is a very nice idea, I was surpised and I ended the game with this good impression. If you could achieve all of this in few hours, I think you will make a fantastic game at the next Ludum Dare.
Some notes :
- you should disable moving if mouse is too close to your center position for avoiding the flipping effect
- The area is a too large, you have no way of appreciate your position if you dont see any border
- When you get the laser, you can't fire it until you see a monster, firing even without target would help the player to understans he's doing it right.
I can't figure out how to get through the "Continue? Yes Quit" screen. I tried every button and went to some lengths to have the mouse cursor over "yes" when the level ended, but I couldn't get through it.
I really like the idea. But I kept running into some pretty bad lag spikes at times. Lags really bad when trying to move on to next level. I think your controls would be easier to figure out if you used A and D to rotate and W and S to move forward and backwards. Just my thoughts.
Couldn't make it work properly, but good to see a BGE game!
@josefnpat: Blender is cross-platform. Try running it in a Linux version of Blender.
some kind of radar would help and the mouse is really annoying
Would have been a lot better with more polish, and, as people have said, a better mouse-movement mechanic.
Hey, found the controls a little bit tricky but seemed fun. Wasn't sure what I was doing but still enjoyed it!
I like the minimal art style & the music is great, but the controls are really awkward. After a while it just stopped for no reason I could spot & asked if I wanted to continue, but I couldn't actually figure out how to say yes. :-(
All the bugs made it very hard to play, but this game seems very cool so I hope you fix everything and take it far...
Mitkus, it's 2012. 50 MB is not a huge download by any stretch of the imagination...
I repeatedly got this error http://i.imgur.com/p5XUy.png when initializing the program in Windows. Not sure why. But if you click Cancel enough, it eventually stops...
Some explanation on the controls would be nice.
I was able to run the game, but when it asked "Continue?" I had no way of choosing yes :(
@ButtercupSaiyan That's odd, as you don't need a disk to run the game
Nice! Another game running in the BGE! ;)
I think just the keyboard controls should be used, I had some problems with the mouse pointer, it just disappeared xD
Sorry my english ^^'
It became slower and slower and eventually just halted while the music still played. I want to check it out, but I couldn't even get past the tutorial. It's a big no-no to not compose your own music. I will rate it later if I can get it working.
Very confusing at the beginning and it froze a lot here, maybe because of the Blender engine, but not sure. Eventually the game froze and after a while asked if I wanted to continue or not. Couldn't select neither of them...
The idea is very nice, though, I wish you had more time to work on it. Congratulations on your first LD! I hope you'll participate on December and have more time to work on it! =D

Too bad you came up with the idea so late! With a bit more polish this would have been really great. Maybe you could tell how to play the game. The music was great.
