Space Mayham

by DevWouter - Jam Entry

* Use WASD to move the ship.
* Left mouse shoots primary gun
* Right mouse fires homing missiles.

The game crashes if you use a low powered graphics card. Switching to a more powerful graphics card solves the problem.

Enemies can drop powerups. One powerup will improve your primary gun (firerate and bullets in single shot after four upgrades) and the other will improve your homing missiles (tracking and amount).

Every 30 seconds a new wave of enemies will spawn making your life misserable and each wave will be stronger than the previous one. If you kill the last enemy a new group of enemies will appear arround you. There are two enemies: Gunner (which shoots the blue bullet) and Hunter (which shoots homing missile).

- Windows Vista or 7 (Windows XP and Windows 8 might work but are untested).
- x86 (32 bit) or x64 (64 bit) machine
- OpenGL 2.0 graphics card.

Some more instructions would have been nice, and it was kind of hard to see what was going on. Making the ships bigger would have helped. overall though its a fun game

No idea what I was doing, and I fail to see how it fits 'evolution.' Also, everything is WAY too small.

This is going to mostly be critiques, but I'd like to make it clear that I did have some fun, and the game is essentially complete.

Off the bat, the enemies are small and dim, and that makes it a strain to see them. That, plus their small size, the imprecision of the weapons, and the extremity ofthe player movement compared to the enviroment, and it can be frustrating killing lone enemies. And given there's no cost to firing both weapons, I'm not sure why they're on both keys, it mostly seems to serve to make me press two buttons instead of one.

On top of that I don't really think the basic upgrade system is enough to really make it an evolution game, unless there's a lot more going on I'm not noticing.

Won't run on my Win7 64 bit machine. It just says "GameTemplate stopped working"

Fun, but the fact the enemies were so small made it less fun.

Aug 28, 2012 @ 7:55pm

why is everything so small? I had problems to hit anything with my primary weapon so I was just spamming rockets. It's strange that the enemies spawn around you and not at the edge of the map. I didn't know what I was picking up until I had like 10 upgrades and was shooting so many missles. Some feedback when picking up something would be nice.
A hp bar or something would've been nice also ^^

Crashed on my laptop running Win8 release preview (x64) with "GameTemplate stopped working"

You fly too fast, it's the same speed of your rockets :-(
But good work =)

Basic. You could improve it by increasing ship size, and involving the theme a bit more.

Aug 28, 2012 @ 8:23pm

177315 points! Made it to err level 25 I think before something spawned on top of me, curses!

Fun game, atmosphere would have been improved with the addition of a background and perhaps some larger enemies but I can understand the reasoning that by having smaller enemies you can fit more on screen, yup?

Could have done with some more enemy types but the basis of a good game is there, just needs some more fleshing out, cool bg music and vocoder action also there :)

Very nice music and sfx.
Enemies where kinda small, hard to hit.
Found that you could just strafe in a circle and not get hurt.

I had way too much fun with this game. I kept making noises like pew pew pew boom crash! Good work on the audio and making a really enjoyable quick game!

I agree it was a little too quick and tiny that it made it more of a strain to see than it needed to be, but fun game.

It was too tall for my screen and I couldn't see anything, I can't really rate this.

DevWouter says ...
Aug 28, 2012 @ 10:05pm

Based on the feedback provided above I have to say I agree with it being too small. The gameplay however relied on speed and skill. There was a zooming camera which went between 1.0f and 2.5f zoom (the later now being the default), but it caused some issues during the gameplay balancing. We will take this in account for our second ludum dare.

The game does include some "evolving" but that is not shown by much. In the original design we made it so that the player would absorb the power of fallen enemies and unlock weapons and more powers (including speed, but I guess we won't put it in there).

@Fsmv: I'm really sorry for that. Normally I would have included an option to start the game with different resolution, but the gameplay required a higher resolution than the 800x600 we started with. Next time we will take this in to account.

@Bvanschooten and @tomhunt: If you use a laptop with two graphics card, try to use the higher one. It does require OpenGL 2.0 and we noticed that some of the intel cards were having problems, switching to the external graphics card solved the problem.

Aug 28, 2012 @ 10:19pm

I thought the game was actually pretty fun, although as others have said, it was very straining on the eyes. Perhaps it was too easy? I just held down both mouse buttons and kept the enemies off screen and went on pretty much indefinitely. Pehaps I'm missing something, but I don't really see much evolution. Sorry if that's a lot of critiques and no encouragements, it did hold my attention for a bit.

Incredibly repetitive! But the best music I've heard so far -- which is also pretty repetitive. Decent, just needs some gameplay variation.

After a slow start this got HARD-CORE...!!! Loved it!!

Blowing up a ship has the best sound!

Aug 28, 2012 @ 11:24pm

This doesn't really fit the theme. The ships were so small, so all I could really do was constantly shoot and hope that I hit something. Homing missiles were very useful, though. This could be fun with some more polish and features.

As the audio designer for the game, I thank you for the kudos. It was a fun project which we're considering taking further, using the comments you state in this thread. So thanks again :)

I downloaded the zip version (prefer not to install stuff), and I get a "GameTemplate.exe is not a valid Win32 application."

Tried everything I could, but still couldn't get it working!

"Gametemplate.exe is not a valid win32 application". On an XP?
I downloaded the "Windows (ZIP)".
Also, it might be more helpful to name the game something other than "no_setup" so that it doesn't get lost in my downloads.

DevWouter says ...
Aug 29, 2012 @ 8:33pm

@BrothersT: There is no difference between the zipped version and the installer and the zipped version worked fine. If you could post your Windows installation and the graphics card you are using I will try and see if I can get it working for you.

The enemy are too small, but once you gets the habit its very playable. The energy of your ship is not visible. I had to start another game to check to see the color change on the small top left icon. The music is good too.

For anyone who is experiencing crashes, if you have a two video card setup (especially an extra Intel HD graphics card) make sure windows is picking the real graphics card when the game is starting. On some systems it defaults to the weaker Intel HD card and that might give you an error.

Highscore 11330 :D Gave up after wave 6 to see if I could actually die! Very addictive, nice gameplay although a little easy once you understand that you just have to stay away from enemies and shoot them from afar.

I like the music, wish it was more varied, would love to see you guys expand on that!

Guys, guys! To anyone who's having troubles with the graphics card thing, I just accidentally found a solution! Go to your Device Manager, go to display adapters, and then right-click your graphics card and press "Update Driver Software!" Does the trick just fine!

To the developers: I suggest you put this in the description.

I can say I love the posibility of using, for the first time, a double fire, the normal laser and the bomb, at the same time, limitless, just like the space, from the center to the infinity, infinite waves...if that is not the expansion of the universe and it evolution i dont know what or who is :)

Well, I found a very easy strategy within a few seconds that made the game much less interesting, sadly. If you just go backwards away from the enemies and fire they line up and let you kill them easy.

Also I found that the sprites were much too small for me to be able to see them well, and this detracted a bit from the gameplay.
