Life of a Worm

by tomsik68 - 48 Hour Compo Entry

In this game, you're a worm and your objective is to get DNAs and evolve to lizard, crocodile and then monkey. DNAs however, aren't everywhere, so you need to find them in different locations. Try not to get killed by humans, or hunger. On the upper right corner, you have hunger bar which can be filled by collecting food. Game is controlled by arrows, you can shoot infections using space. This game uses my personal engine called SGE (Simple Game Engine). Source of the engine is hosted at github.
Requires Java 6+.
Tools used:
Language: Java
Engine: SGE
IDE: Eclipse
Graphics: Paint.NET(most of gfx), Inkscape
Sound: sfxr
[UPDATE]: * Fixed not being able to play after die-ing. (we're allowed to fix bugs see -> http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2012/08/27/ludum-dare-24-weekend-ends-time-to-rate-games/ )
* Made WEB version!

Simple yet pretty fun. The gameplay is reminiscent of early 90s Windows games :) Everything feels very rough and unpolished, the collision detection is off. Enemies seem to enjoy getting stuck in the walls. Really cool that you have your own engine written for this.

Pretty simple game! It feels a bit rough, but there are a lot of big levels and that's cool for me!
I have to agree with kyyrma, it really looks like a 90s Windows game :D
I think there should be some kind of sound effect when you get hit by an enemy because on my first playthrough I didn't realize I was getting hit until I died!
And the bullets should be a bit faster!
Good work though :)

Nice and simple, I like these kind of games but I would like to see some story.

Also after I died of hunger i could not restart the game.

Pretty cool. Kinda lo-fi, DOS-style. The collision detection's a bit iffy, and some background music would've been nice, but other than that, yeah.

Indeed this does feel very oldschool, the cavemen made me a laugh a bit :D

Nice overall with an ok engine but far to easy. Also still had the unable to respawn bug in the .JAR file.

was playing in firefox, and once you die you can't start a new game doing so just brings you straight to the death screen again. good game otherwise.
