April 20th-23rd 2012 :: 10 Year Anniversary! :: Theme: Tiny World
trapped. is an arena-style platform game with a quasi-retro aesthetic. You are trapped in a tiny world, with its inhabitants out to get you. Survive as long as you can.
This game was created in a grand total of 11 hours. It was created in pure Java (it only uses the JLayer library for playing the mp3). See my forthcoming blog post for more information.
Use WASD to move around, and aim/fire using the mouse. Create your own levels by making a copy of the map_template.map file in the trapped/maps/ directory, and editing it with a text editor. Please see the included README file for more information.
Thanks for playing trapped. - Have fun!

Please note, you must have Java installed to play this game. Also, the source is included in the downloads (open the .jar file with WinRAR or similar to view).
Last-minute update: fixed some bugs with the Windows and Linux scripts, a bug in the graphics buffering (it wasn't working on some machines) and a bug where the game would launch in a tiny window (this may not actually be fixed - if it occurs, please re-launch the game again).

the AI was too easy to beat, as the enemies couldn't jump up. I could simply chill at the top without moving.
I want to be friends! *Dies*
I thought the text was pretty funny. As a platformer though, it needed a little more work.
Sound and music worked well for me(I enjoyed it aswell). You could improve it to allow the enemies to jump and a timer stating how long you have been in the level for.. The more time the harder/ smarter the enemies.. (Windows 7 x64)
Cheers for the comments everyone.
Concerning the sound bug, I've no idea what's happening there, I guess Java's sound library just doesn't support some hardware??
Because of the time constraints I mentioned on my blog posts, AI wasn't a priority at all - having a working, polished game was my main target. As a result, yes, it is very easy to beat the enemies - the longer you play it, the more frequently the enemies spawn (but it's not balanced so I actually have no idea how quickly they spawn after playing for a decent length - definitely didn't play test enough!).
Glad people seem to be enjoying certain aspects of the game, even though the gameplay is lacking somewhat!
I found this very eeariy .. I wanted to find out more about why he was trapped etc. Good stuff with the messages of players shouting crazy stuff at you etc.
As somebody else said, I liked the sound (I can appriciate it al the more for how bad my background tine was...). Enemies do need to jump though - and maybe a little more spawn chance for ammo? Well done!
Sorry, couldn't play. "Windows cannot find javaw" error...
@Monkey Armada, you need to have Java installed to play this game. Sorry, should have put that in the description!
It would be cooler if there was an end. But it is pritty good for plain java and 11 hours
I definitely liked the humor, but the game itself wasn't exactly deep :D But good news, I tested on OS X Snow Leopard and all systems were a go. No problems here.
@TheGamingProject, thanks for letting me know, I can remove that pesky "untested" label now!
Fun little game, the controls are a bit fiddly. Love the text from the baddies though :)
Could you provide a link for the java stuff i'm supposed to get ? I thought I had it installed but the game isnt running.
Nice little game. Movement was quite awkward though, particularly jumping. Loved the messages between the player and the enemies! Didn't like the fact that enemies can actually spawn right on top of you though, meaning you didn't have to chance to avoid them. Maybe I was missing something on the pyramid level but I couldn't get back on to the platforms once I was down on the pyramid.
@blob, try www.java.com/download.
@Lucas Tiridath, I made it so enemies can't spawn if you're on the spawn point tile - however, I just realized that they can still spawn if you're on the boundary of two tiles (but the game considers you to be on the adjacent tile), so it would have the same effect. Whoops! As for the levels: they were thrown together somewhat haphazardly, and in some cases there are unreachable platforms (such as the pyramid level). Just pretend the player's stuck on the pyramid, and they have to survive the falling enemies. Or something. :P
Dodging the other guys is really hard and ammo powerups are a bit too rare. The text was funny however.
Pros:
- the sayings of the enemies
- level editing
- runs fast and smooth
Cons:
- No sound
- boring gameplay
- ugly textures
- not enough random phrases
- no random levels
- level editing is not ingame
@kddekadenz, there most definitely is sound - perhaps it wasn't working for you? It seems like the audio isn't working for everyone. Sorry!
The rest of the points are all valid though - thanks for the feedback! (Though I take offense to you saying the textures are ugly ;) ).
I got the "little-endian not supported" error, so no sound for me (running Linux Mint 64 bit and Java Spot 1.6). The AI could definitely use some work. As it is, it's just too predictable. Nice touch with the lines that enemies and the player say.
I really, really liked this one. Simple enough, yet captivating. And polished, so I guess it's a success since this was your target. Gratz! =)
I liked the music and texts as well like many others.
For some reason I experienced a freeze for a couple of seconds every time a bullet hit an enemy or I landed after a jump or in some other places. That made the playing a pretty bad experience. The fps counter on the console says something like this:
FPS: 50
FPS: 48
FPS: 49
FPS: 11
FPS: 0
FPS: 33
FPS: 49
FPS: 18
FPS: 0
FPS: 1

FPS: 13

FPS: 7
FPS: 3

I guess this is ok for 11 hours work. You could have certainly made this alot more fun if you'd worked on it twice as long, though.
@Toast, I would have loved to have worked on this twice as long, but unfortunately, life transpired to keep me from doing so.
