April 20th-23rd 2012 :: 10 Year Anniversary! :: Theme: Tiny World
"Overpopulous" is a game about space colonization.
Mengolia is overpopulated.
Major advancements were made in interstellar traveling to colonize other planets.
Today is the day the first manned shuttle will leave your planet in search of a new home.
But, oblivious to everyone, the shuttle is upside down.
And then it propels the whole planet through space.
You can still colonize though - at the speed of light!
How to play:
- Press the SPACE key to blast off!
- Use the A, D, left or right directional arrows to steer your ship.
- Crash into a planet to colonize it.
- If a colonized planet crashes into an empty planet, it colonizes it and starting a Combo counter.
- Crashing into planets and satellites (natural and artificial) fill your Blast Off meter, allowing you to use it again once it's complete.
- When hit, artificial satellites and spaceships release astronauts that can be picked up to start a Colonization Multiplier.
- You can stack Colonization Multipliers until you hit an empty planet.
- Avoid the Sun!
- Be a sport and post your Best Time and Score. ;)
We've been working hard to fix some game breaking bugs.
Hopefully the game is more playable now that the Home World doesn't disappear (we think) from the screen.
Bug List:
- Some animations need speed tweaks.
- Combos sometimes don't end.
- Combo and Multiplier counter sometimes don't appear (but points are still given).
- Planets that crashes into Sun isn't removed from the total number of planets and doesn't subtract score (don't worry though, only colonized planets are destroyed by the Sun).
- Some physics are f#&%$ up!
Missing Features:
- Leaderboards button in main menu leads nowhere.
- Intro animations aren't playing completely.
- Planet number should be random.
- ESC should bring up Pause Menu.
- No end screen when colonizing all planets.
- No Retry option on Game Over.
- Particle system is disabled.

I love the opening cinematic! And the game is really fun, congratulations!
Very nice game ! Just a bug I had: the ship seems to disappear sometimes... I basically used the center of the screen as a reference but it's harder for sure... Good job :D
Haha! The Death Star and the Pixar ball made me laugh :) Good game!
Absolutely love the sprite work, and the SUN. Pretty awesome experience, great job!
That. Was. Awesome. Amazing job. What framework did you use? Just curious.
This is great! The opening sequence is my favorite part. Nice work.
@deviantgeek - We used an in-house game engine made by Pedro Gonçalves =D (this was the first time we used it as a team), box2D physics engine and flint.
@cadin - Glad you liked it =D, the tutorial is the same line as the opening sequence.
Amazing game! really liked the way the story is told from the tutorial to the intro ahah, really amusing. The art is superb and really humorous throughout the entire experience.
The gameplay is consistent and fun and I also really liked the idea of combos, but since we fly off in the opposite direction of the planet we hit, the visual effect that we get from them bouncing of each other is rarely visible (possibly from the speed). For me it was a great deal of fun going around a planet just to make it collide with it's near fellow on the occasions i managed to see several of them together.
There could be an opportunity to add combo objectives to the 40 planets or something alike that might extend the longevity of the game, although as it is it already made me come back several times to replay =D
Great entry! Congrats!
Love the references! The humor too. And the ART it's amazing, congratulations!
Nice job! Good use of humour. Very stylish.
Since no one else is posting scores: just 102100 / 2:37, so far.

@jwolf - Yay!!! Scores. ;-)
@Evil Cult - We have created a mirror to help solve the problem =).
Thanks a lot for your feedback and the kind words!
This is certainly one of the most well polished entries I have seen so far, and I've rated lots of games! And I LOVE the characters, they have a lot of personality! Congratulations!
Kinda cool! I didn't fully get the point of it, but did quite well I think! Score: 223500 and Time: 6:47.
It's full of personality, polished look, great graphics. Well done you guys!
I love the storytelling. The controls got a little annoying; sometimes I'd circle around a planet 3 or 4 times trying to ram into it. Also, I think the yellow satellites should be a different color so you can't mistake them for the people on the surface. Great game, though :D
Thanks for your feedback! This is one of the best parts for us, ^-^ to hear what you guys have to say!
@liger13 If the controls were super precise and smooth there would be no challenge! xD The "mengs" are clumsy guys!
@liger13:
Your best option is to do an 8-figure or draw an ellipse if you keep circling a planet.
@liger13:
Oh, and for some reason, every natural satellite is using the cheese planet skin. Oh boy.
Yeah! Super fun! Score: 168,150 Time: 4:17. Really enjoyed this one! Definitely one of my favorite Jam entries so far. Only thing I had a hard time with was collecting all the floating Mengs, yet it was so fun to try and rescue them. Anyway, fabulous job! Definitely bookmarking to come back to later on. Thanks!
Great game!
Lovely graphics, innovative gameplay and a whole lotta fun!
We hope for you to continue making games for Ludum Dare!
Really fun stuff is going on there! Simple, yet addictive mechanic, music that reminds a bit about the old arcades, but is modern at the same time - and humorous artwork. Well done!
@R3ason: Those astronauts are hard to catch but to balance that they give you more points than colonizing a planet, and a multiplier for your next colonization. You can even stack those multipliers and get a crazy score for just one planet.
@Evil Sandwich Studios: Thanks. And we're really glad there are more and more Portuguese teams competing. :)
@vigrid: Thanks! That's the feel we wanted to achieve. Shame we didn't implement leaderboards on time.
I really liked this! The opening cut-scene is great with neat graphics. The music also works very nice with everything. Good gameplay, very nicely done.
192 800. That was actually lots of fun! I did end up circling some targets way too many times before I managed to hit them tho, but I guess that is mainly because I suck lol. I like the gameplay, the scoring system, the graphics, the intro, the sound and the humor. It all makes a brilliant combination of awesomeness. Great work!
Nice! One of the more playable, complete game entries that I've played. I love the OMG/s gauge.
great job. one of the best i've played so far. I'm even impressed that you managed to build a game with such a big group. the team dynamics must have been crazy. great audio, visuals. you clearly have someone who cares about UI doing some work in there. great job. opening cinematic makes almost no sense without reading the text on your entry page first :P hehe.
Nice and fun! The concept works well and the tutorial and intro really add a lot to the mood. Plus there's Portal space cores everywhere! :D
Nice style! :) I liked the intro a lot. The planet pinball gameplay is pretty fun, though I only found 39/40 planets and I didn't really know how to make progress except explore randomly. I hope I didn't miss a sweet cutscene!
It's really polished, intro has a nice art style. Unfortunately I found the gameplay to be rather tedious.
Nice game! Unfortunately I only read the description after playing it and now I lost my score... But I colonized 37 planets before the time ran out! I loved the intro story! Really funny. =)
Repetitive but fun mechanics. Graphics, intro and music were pure awesomeness! :)
Pretty cool! Loved the graphics and the animations. The open sequence was neat. Flying around felt just right and was a lot of fun. Congrats!
Cool idea! I'm rather impressed at your intro. The mechanic seem like it could be something really cool and addictive.
(but the controls are a little effed up). Nice graphics, nice audio, good work!
I liked the intro and the polished overall, cool style. The music is very 2000.
Prety interesting game!
Some polish plus hi-res graphics pack nd the game will be awesome.
Unfortunately a bit slow on my machine, but I loved the graphics style and music.
This is good! This is very good! I only found 34 planets...but that was quite enough to have a great fun!
Nice game, cool graphics and very addictive. Would love to see the source code of this
Presentation is great. Game is great too, but it doesn't feel as much like colonising as it does like just smashing into things. One of my plays the planets were invisible until I smashed into them.
The music and style were both top-notch, and the game, though simple, was a blast to play! Very nice job!
This game is hell a lot of fun!
It feels quite polished even for a jam game. Only Thing I would critizise is that the graphics from intro to game aren't that consistent. Everything else is just awesome. And omg/s is just a great measurement unit.
Wow, very fun. After a while, I experienced some framerate slowdown, but that couldn't distract me from the awesomeness of this. Nice, guys!
Great, very addictive game with neat graphics. It is a shame it has no ending cutscene :/
Awesome!
Really polished. I couldnt tell that it was made in 72 hours. That's very good.
Great work!
@machinas: Oh man. Did anyone else feel the same? In that case we should slightly tweak the intro so the concept gets through - after the results are out, of course! :)
@Tcstyle: Good point. That happened because we didn't know the absolute scale the ingame elements would be in. That depended on factors like the ship speed and distance between them. Most of the art you see ingame was made with 4x that size!
@Qaterknan: You got them all? Awesome! I think you're the first one in here that did that, so I'll let you in on a little something. This is what should have happened:
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/win_screen.jpg
This is the end screen you were supposed to have seen. Your score and initials input would be overlayed, which would go into the leaderboards:
Very very sweet game! Top marks for mood, graphics, audio and humour. The theme is totally spot on too
That was fun! Didn't really make any combos until I suddenly got lucky and got millions of points. :) Good job!
Very cool opening cinematic, wasn't exactly clear what to do at first but I got it. Bonus points for using that classic Gold Box SSI font.
@Dark Acre Jack: Check out the ingame tutorial, it will tell you all you need to know!
This game was really fun while it lasted, but at about 35/40 planets the framerate dropped to an unplayable level. Great work though, I could keep playing this.
That was awesome! Really nice polished game with a good sense of humour and a lot of fun to play.
Well done! I really enjoyed this one :)
Probably my favorite game of LD23. Colonizing planets by ramming yours into it? Best premise ever. Check out my gameplay of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXjQlvTOnMw
