I didn't know you could make card games with RenPy.
I played thrice and enjouyed it (win/lose/win) but honnestly didn't have time enough to try to build my own deck. The game isn't self-explanatory at all and you should work on the card design to make it easier, but the tutorial was just perfect, and I get it very quickly. About the game itself, it has good mechanics but isn't perfect yet : it's easy to get stuck with plenty of ressources and nothing to build. In this case, you can just discard one card at a time, and you're sure to lose.

The atmosphere is great, I really was in a forest with tiny gnomes and I enjoyed that!

Anyway, I'm really really really glad to have tried this one!

This is exactly the kind of interface (and tutorial) I needed to add to my entry (also a card game)! I didn't know you could do this in RenPy either.

I really enjoyed this although it seems to depend a bit too much on your luck in your initial hand. If you are able to play a lot of cards at the beginning (regardless of which ones they are), you can go through your deck a lot quicker (and be able to "search" for what you need). Maybe there should be a possibility to discard 2 cards so that using an ability is costly in some sense.

Also, two thing that should be mention in the tutorial (or maybe I missed it) is that you always draw back to 7 and reshuffle the discard pile back into the stock when its empty.

Awesome! I like that this is a real card game - this didnt need to be coded at all! I'm hosting a game jam for physical games and i hope we get some as good as this!

Sound and gameplay are solid. Tutorial was perfect. Graphics were mostly great...

I feel like I needed a visual link between Builders and costing Chrystal to play, for example.

But that is such a small thing, really. You designed a fun card game and virtually implemented it in 48 hours - and you did a great job!

This is a favourite of mine, so far.

Thanks for all the great comments.

I was going to have a Anime-style story around the game, but common sense won and I polished the game play some more.

There are a bunch of things I would add now if I could. :)

With about 24 more hours I would add:
- option to discard entire hand
- help text on hover
- two human hot seat version
- different AI to play

Great job! Once I figured out how to play this (by paying attention during the tutorial the second time :P ) it was a lot of fun! Simple but well thought out mechanics, I loved it. The little characters on the cards were cute too, it would have been nice to have art on the building and resource cards, but I'm guessing you ran out of time for that.

The tutorial had me worried, so much to remember! But when I got in game the click-on-card help got me going. I lost, but I played a long time. Really clever!

Impressive, a reasonable card game including deck customisation in 48 hours, nicely done!

Controls were a little bit off - I frequently had to drag cards multiple times before it realised what I was trying to do.

Enjoyed playing this so again, nice one.

Couldn't run on Arch Linux. I tried fiddling a bit with it but I suspect it wasn't compatible with 64bit system. I'll rate it once I get back on Windows.

I love a good card game, and this one is fantastic. The tutorial took too long to get through because of the cards moving off the screen, maybe move all cards at once to save some time?

@ratboy2713 Good point. It was a limitation of my understanding of how ren'py animation works. I think I have figured out ho to do it now.

Impressive work. Card games can be tricky to computerize! The mechanics eventually frustrated me though; the game seemed to have a lot of delayed feedback where certain actions can get you in trouble, but only a few turns down the line. The UI also had some occasional problems that left me guessing as to whether I was following the rules or not.

I loved your tutorial! It makes the game look so much more polished. Of course, card game itself is also quite fun -- If I start thinking after the game how to tweak the deck composition, I guess the game was quite successful :-)

You could maybe make your cards a bit more visible -- maybe putting them on the diagonal? Sometimes I didn't know if I had a mushroom or a mushroom house in my hand.

Wow, this is one of the ludum dare games that I might play several times outside of judging it!
It's actually quite fun! You should add the extra features you mentioned... I think it'd be fun! My suggestion is an option to be able to set how many points you need to get to win. Of course other characters and mechanics would be kinda fun too, but whatever.

The music made a pretty sweet mood, although the flute wasn't quite perfect, which was a little annoying.

Still, this is a pretty great game!

Yeah, my recorder playing wasn't the greatest which I why I went with two generated pieces rather than subject people to more of my playing. XD

I like the idea of changing the number of points. Thanks for suggesting it.

Really lovely entry. It's so... gnomish. Loved the fact it was a card game although I was not good at it. I guess controls may benefit from some explanations (It took me a while to realize how to "attack" my enemy) and since there are so many things to remember, some reminders would be good when the player attempts to do something like attacking a unit or playing a building and it's impossible with the current hand (telling the player what s/he is missing in order to perform that action). I liked the game though. It's fun.

I agree with what most everyone else has said: slick UI, great tutorial.
But I didn't get the connection with flowers for warriors, mushrooms for spys etc. That made it a little hard to remember the combos.

Nice work. Impressively designed card game for 48 hours.
One thing I might suggest is giving the player the option to discard more than one card in order to recover from a bad situation faster. Right now the game seems to favour the player in the better position which could be frustrating when the computer was in the lead and made games end very quickly if the player got off to a strong start.

The tutorial lead me to think that this game is too complicated and I couldn't possibly remember all that, but after a couple times playing against the computer (and won!) I didn't feel it was that hard.

The music created a very good atmosphere and I love the idea that I don't really need the computer to play this game at all, provided I make the cards and find someone else to play with.

A really well-made card game! I didn't know something this level of complexity could be so easily made in Ren'Py. You did a great job of not only designing and coding a game in the allotted 48 hours but also keeping an admirable production all around- the art of the character types is really adorable and the music is all pretty great. I love how it randomly flicks between the pieces of soundtrack.

You also seem to have a talent for music! I really enjoyed the folky feel of all of it and it really complimented the game's green aesthetic.

It was a lot of fun and satisfying to sabotage the other player!

Man, lots of potential here. The mechanics seem pretty deep and like they were close to really working, but I had one big issue. Needing to spend the same resource to off an opponent as it cost me to make them meant the entire game nobody had no builders and it just kept going forever. We both spent all our crystal making a builder then another would kill it. There needs to be some kind of protector or something to trump warriors and spies, I think, or it goes on forever. Also the music gets painful quickly.

haha, this was pretty fun. and don't let the detractors get to you - the flute playing was perfect. it's exactly how little gnomes would have played it and i chuckled thinking about that the whole time. 5-starring that audio!

When I ran the game, I thought 'meh, some card game'. After seeing the tutorial and playing my first game, I can say now that I'm REALLY impressed! First, it's done in Ren'py. Wow! I didn't know that so much mechanic can be put in game using this tool. Great, innovative application! Secondly, I was *sure* that the game will be stupid and that there will be some silly move that will make the mechanic broken - but I was wrong! I mean, there's an issue when both players would use warriors all the time (see @demonpants), but this can probably be easily fixed.
The game is actually very fun to play, and there's also deck building - wow... Great work!
Aside from great gameplay, I appreciate making music on your own. Flute doesn't hold the tempo, but I'd imagine that's indeed kinda gnomish. Sounds pretty nice, anyway. Awesome entry.

Awesome. The gameplay is solid, innovative. The realization is very good ! The tutorial is very polished, the game is easy to pick up but probably hard to play efficiently.
Now like the others, I wish there where some real cards to play the game with my friends :)
Are you going to developp this game further ?

Very well done for a 48 hour entry. I've seen a few card games over the past several LDs, but this one was the first I actually tried to play. This is pretty cool, and the tutorial is a very nice touch.
A couple of things:
1) I think you should add some more color to the cards.
2) During the tutorial, when you are changing the cards around, I think this should be done faster or at lease let the user press space so I don't have to wait for each individual card to disappear.

Overall a very nice job!
