by 0x17 - 48 Hour Compo Entry

Okay so this is it. My first Ludum Dare Entry. I used the theme as game name throughout development and now I'm too lazy to change that so I just called it Tiny World with my username as prefix.

- Left&Right for horizontal movement and Up/Space for jumping.
- Escape to go back to world overview or quit game.
- Return to enter selected world in world overview screen.

On Android tap on the left/right border of the screen to run left/right and tap both left&right borders at the same time for jumping. Press the back button on your device to return to the world overview.

Easy -> small inertia, no spikes
Normal, Hard, Impossible -> growing inertia, with spikes.

The jar should run fine on all desktops (Win/Mac/Linux) with a Java VM installed.

Web&Android ports were done after the compo. The web version should run on recent versions of Firefox and Chrome. Android version was only tested on my HTC Desire so far. Hopefully works more or less on other devices.

Since I couldn't come up with a great idea to fit the theme I just used a small planet as a level/world overview as rationale/excuse. The game itself is quite hard (maybe not in a good way) and the controls are erratic to say the least.

I also put the source on bitbucket: https://bitbucket.org/0x17/tinyworld

Not sure if I'll write a postmortem. :-D

Yep, that game is pretty hard, even at easy. It feels like its running too fast. Besides to that, well done.

i agree, it feels like the game is running in fast forward, getting past spikes was pretty much pure luck as it was generally moving faster than i could see.

I like the way you get into a "flow" and don't need to worry too much about dying.. just keep trying again and again. Love how the little green bits of fluff(?) end up everywhere. Nice offbeat feel (music helps this as well)

controls makes the game quite unplayable

Nice little details like the starfield and jump particles. The platforming is managable but definitely on the hard side - even in easy mode - and mostly because of the way the control mechanics work, making it easy to bounce off a wall into a sawblade. And it all seems only vaguely related to being a tiny world...

The game seems fun but is hard to control on my phone. Also the game only uses 1/4 of my screen.

Really fun game. Some of the levels are really hard. I love the controlled chaos of it all.

i'm not sure i understand how it fits the theme.

That was a lot of fun. The controls felt a little sloppy sometimes but once I got the hang of the auto-wall jump it was fun finishing all the levels (but I couldn't get all the coins)

Argh! I hated this! Sorry! The music was annoying as hell, the sounds were annoying as hell, the movement was annoying as hell! Oh, and I'm not sure how this fits the theme... However, reading the other comments it seems like I'm a minority, so don't pass on this just because of my comments... I'm probably just a weirdo!

@Nocturne no problem man. Not everyone has the same taste. Thx for being honest though. :-)

Wow, that's hard! I couldn't get past the first or second obstacle on any of the levels I tried.

The music wasn't really to my taste but suited the feel of the game. In fact, the whole things feels pretty polished - nice job!

@Thinkofdeath the Android version should now scale to the entire screen size independent of the actual resolution.

For me it wasn't soo much the speed that was the problem but the amount you bounced away from walls that made this just too awkward to really enjoy. Good effort though and IMO with a little more tweaking could be really fun. I also liked the level selection screen.

didn't expect a MeatBoy style game in this compo :) nicely done tho

The player moves too fast for me; it was impossible to even finish the first level. Even the music creates a tension of speed, which is good, but made things more complicated for me.

This does indeed remind me of MeatBoy. The controls could use a bit of fine tuning though as the little guy moves a bit too fast.

I consider myself pretty good at platformers, but the sliding nature of this one made it really difficult. Also there was a lot going on - stars flying the back and the brightly colored blocks made it difficult to tell what to focus on. I can't believe you made all that music and sounds though - nice work.

Great job on completing your first LD! It's a great accomplishment!

The overworld felt great. The forced wall-jumping and the small-corrdiors made advancing completely arbitrary, though.

Reminds me of Super Meat Boy. The gravity didn't feel ok to me, an acceleration instead of constant fall down would be better, I think. The controls were a bit dodgy especially when running towards a wall.
