Cloud Realm

by Hempuli - 48 Hour Compo Entry

Cloud Realm is a very small game where you play as a young boy, fighting against a huge robotic sky serpent, one which siblings have been tormenting previously peaceful areas. The game may be very hard or very easy depending on how quickly one handles the controls.

A & D - move around
W, SPACE & Left mouse - jump when not flying
ESC - skip the first part of the game (in case you want to get to the action quickly)

Left mouse - shoot while flying
Right mouse or E - leave a bomb while hanging from a surface
Space - cling to a surface and jump off it, more about this in the in-game instructions

In the game you're controlling a glider-ish vehicle, so horizontal momentum matters a lot - you glide when your horizontal momentum is high, but start losing altitude when you slow down. However, diving a bit and then accelerating makes you gain height. This may need some trying but you have infinite retries!!

All this is also explained in the in-game instruction screen. Shouldn't be too weird.
The game should work on Wine.

Pretty easy to get the hang of it and pretty fun. The damage noises got a bit annoying, but really fun

Just told you on irc, but this game deserves a comment as well. I LOVE the story and style, the detail of the graphics and the movement mechanic of the second part feels so fresh. I had lots of fun even thou I didn't win. But I'm missing some more sounds to build up athmosphere (even more) and music would have been nice. please make a post-compo version of this even if the length of the game stays the same. Best regards! (I'd vote if I could but I didn't submit)

I love the epic feel of this hole game. Truly greatly done.

I've never liked gliding mechanics in games, even in Super Mario World, so that part naturally turned me off a bit. But the rest of it is so wonderful - great job dude!

One small concern is that it only kinda fits the theme. Maybe the story explains how it fits the theme better though. I skipped the intro.

I almost freakin' hate you for those beautiful graphics! Had a lot of fun playing this one, although I'm not a fan of gliding - just can't seem to be able to get it. Nevertheless, an awesome entry. Love it.

Feels really complete. I couldn't really get a hang of the flying - there's no static reference points so it's hard to tell how fast you're moving.

I completely agree. I couldn't figure out a good way to show your movement speed that would've seemed logical given the setting.

I got a very Shadow of the Colossus feel from this! I love the deep swooshy noise that you hear when the serpent is nearby, and it was fun, tense, and awesome dogfighting against its missiles and bombing its surface.

I wish there was some indicator of how high you are. Without that, it was hard to tell how much diving mattered or how close I was to the serpent.

Loved the graphics, especially the character portraits! I found it a little hard to control the gliding, as someone else mentioned, it was difficult to gauge my speed and direction. Some static reference points (like far away parallax mountains) would have definitely helped.

Overally, amazing work! Really nice fun polished game :)

A lot of fun! Reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus. Pretty graphics and good audio, and bonus points for the effort put into the interactive cutscene at the start. It adds a lot.

I had an issue whenever the robo-serpent wasn't on screen. Since the background doesnt' scroll, I had nothing to compare my position too. Therefore, I could never know if I was actually getting any height or not, and that made me feel like I couldn't figure out how to control the damn thing.

Also, no mouse lock means I clicked outside of the window several times, which also didn't pause the game - that caused quite a bit of frustration when it happened.

I really like this game, I haven't managed to kill the sky serpent yet, but I'll have another go. I did manage to bomb him one. The controls are quite tricky, I had to read it a couple of times to work out what I needed to do. This game oozes atmosphere and has a strong contrast in scale!

It's pretty difficult to get the hang of...I spent the first couple of games bouncing off the bottom until I died. Then I figured out I have to hold W down the whole time...I think? It's impossible to tell when your guy is going to dive or not.

My guy kept dive bombing and I don't know why. First few goes were good, and restarting the game seemed to help somewhat for whatever reason. Either way, after bombing the big dragon guy a few times I got too frustrated with constantly dying for no real reason.

I love the look and feel of the game. The art is amazing, and the audio was great as well. For whatever reason I could not get the hang of flying, no matter how much I tried using A/D/W it seemed like my character really just wanted to fall from the sky. Then again, I'm on Windows 8, so I guess anything is possible.

In any event, nice work!

Extremely epic and pretty. Love the enormous boss battle. Would be great if there were more details in the sky so I could better judge how high up I am!

It took me a while to figure out the controls, especially since there isn't much feedback of whether you're rising or going down. But when you get the hang of it, controlling the character becomees really satisfying!

I like the pixel art a lot!

Love the atmosphere. The combat was fun but it did take a long time to get the hang of gliding. Played it until I beat the damned mechanical beast. Very enjoyable game.

Interesting little game. Bit complex with all the controls however, and I dont think I ever got the hang of the gliding part.
You can see a ton of work has gone into this game though, so well done, graphics are quite nice and the battle is pretty cool

The game is hard, and controls a bit weird (why not WS to cling and drop bombs ?) but this is one of the most enjoying gameplay I've seen so far. It reminds me Nitrome's Sky Serpent, which is good!
