April 20th-23rd 2012 :: 10 Year Anniversary! :: Theme: Tiny World
Objective of the game is to destroy the 'Tiny World'!
Game is an old-school arcade style action/score
game, when you have to try and do as much destruction
to the planet as possible before the timer runs out.
Complete with old-school start menu and score screen.
Special powers are:
* Comet storm : Unleash a deadly storm of comets.
* Vaporize : Melt away the different layers of the world
You can use the W,A,S,D keys to accelerate and rotate the
camera, but it is not essential to the gameplay.

Hi kylerhoades, thanks for letting me know.
I tracked down the problem and found that it is caused if you try to run my game on a device that doesn't have vertex or pixel shader support.
I have created a non-shader version of my entry here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28506369/When%20Worlds%20Collide%20-%20NO%20SHADERS.rar
This version won't look at nice as the original one though, since my lighting model is based on vertex and pixel shaders.
Enjoy :)
The Vaporize power doesn't seem to reload after the first game. (works the first time you play, but when you restart the level it will never be available)
Other than that it worked good, and played well. It looks really nice, but not a lot going for it in gameplay. I got 90 some percent of the planet destroyed once.
Thanks AG, that did the trick. Cool game. The destruction was fun and looked good. Smashing stuff is always fun!
Awesome Game. Love the way the planet reloads.
Your own OpenGL Engine? If so very well done
Really cool idea. I don't know if it's just the low specs on my computer but every few seconds the game would freeze and take up about 8 seconds on my timer which made it impossible to destroy more than 30%. But the game looks beautiful and is a really cool idea.
The best entry I played so far! I like the flow of the game, but 2 things would make it perfect:
* Audio
* Just one more power
I really like the game, just managed to destroy the planet 100% with an entire 9 seconds to spare, Score was 1237951. The game player well for me (but this is a newer computer that can play most AA games on the highest setting)
Breaking things is cool!
Also, the regeneration animation is awesome.
Neat effect, especially when the planet regenerates. I get the feeling this game is secretly here to give us all repetitive stress injuries though. ;)
Fair to say that graphics works well but I had the feeling to see a technical demo. I played until the end but still don't know how to master my score, or to try different combos. In the end, destroying stuff still feels kind of good
Nice :) I also noticed the second play-through didn't allow me to vaporize. But absolutely, smashing stuff is cool. And it looks great - could just do with some satisfying sounds.
Runs a little slowly on my PC, (Window 7 x64) especially during a comet storm but it runs.
Awesome to play, but very limited. Still, this is a game I would love to keep on my hard drive for years, so I can always smash a planet when I feel like it :P
Audio would have made it even better.
Nice job with the voxel engine, I particularly liked the Death Star style explosion when you destroy the world.
Seems like you could build something really nice around this with a bit more time.
Thanks for all the comments guys... yeah really a shame about the lack of audio or music... I did have plans to implement sound but it just wasn't within my time deadline...
If I had a bit more time I would have tried to put some audio in, but time wasn't my friend. This is my first LD entry btw.
Awesome game! I ran into the vaporize bug too, where I couldn't use it after the run-through.
Really well done, kept me quite entertained. Nice job.
Neat idea; I like the way the planet looks and the lighting is nice, always fun to blow stuff up. =)
I didn't win, but my score was 111156. Simple fun, if a bit difficult without using vaporize a lot. :)
Nice simple gameplay, executed excellently! Some sound would really do wonders for this game i think.
The rebuilding of the world when playing again was pretty awesome
Clicky clicky clicky clicky clicky. 2,753,031. Working on Windows 7 64bit Home Premium edition!
Nice graphics, definitely has the Minecraft thing going on. There isn't really much of a game - I didn't really have any choices to make, just keep clicking "Comet Storm" over and over.
Love the destroy-features, it's fun!
It could use some easing in though, right now it's not really clear what you can/should do, or even that the mouse-button does things. The skill differ too, while the meteorites are click-targeted, the vaporize is automatically global.
works fine for me, need more gameplay: maybe some people on planet? :D
Cool game! Loved the graphics, particularly the rebuilding the world when you play it a second time. Would have liked to have a bit more strategy to it, felt a bit like a clickfest, but overall cool stuff :D
Your thumbnail is eye-catching. This looks like a lot of fun, but I'm on a mac. :(
Looks awesome, blowing up the planet entirely IS satisfying, but feel like it needs some extra challenge or something
I had loads of fun blowing up this planet. It's a good de-stresser. Too bad there was no audio at all!
1 sec left o_o http://i.imgur.com/6r0zi.png
Enjoyable! :D
It reminds me of my earlier days... Mwuahaha! >:D
Couldn't start it. "vector expression out of range"
Tried on Win7 64, i5, Intel HD3000
It's a pity cause it looks so great.
Very cool bit of tech, don't really see it as much of a game, but very interesting to say the least!
ha, clicky awesomeness :D the vaporise is ridiculously overpowered tho
Very nice game and as many others statet the regenerating is really decently done : )
Not the best game I played because of the limited gameplay but very near to the top ; )
Unfortunately, I had to play the non-shader version as well, although it still looked pretty good.
It did seem more like a toy than a full game, but I kept going back to try out new strategies so the core mechanic is definitely fun!
I really liked the little touches, like how restarting causes the world to reform and how vaporize starts with the water. I wasn't sure what allowed me to use my abilities. Time, perhaps? It would have added a bit more strategy if different types of blocks regenerated different abilities (water = comet, magma = vaporize for example).
Great job! I'd like to see what you can do with it now that the LD is over!
I couldn't get the game to run but I did watch the gameplay video you linked and this looks like great fun.
PLayed it a few times, finally got the planet to blow before time. Great fun.
Excellent job on the destruction and restart animation.
The restart anim is pretty slick aaaand I almost broke a finger getting to 94% destruction. Nice work!
Nice tech! Need some creatures on/inside the planet to ultimate fun.
I love the game idea! And I like how good the earth looks and how I can bring it down to the core.
However I think you can develop the idea a bit more. Cuz right now, there is no challenge. You just click as hard as you can. Maybe the planet is firing back? Or maybe it gets "health packs" or whatever and whenever those touch the earth, they bring back your progress, so you need to keep hitting the earth and watch out for those as well etc..
Great concept, i believe would be a fantastic game if polished.
Thanks for playing my game people and all the comments and feedback! Much appreciated :)
I totally get that my game didn't have the most extensive gameplay available, in fact I wrote about that very fact in my post mortem: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/author/alwaysgeeky/
I spent almost all of the first day just getting the voxel engine written and properly rendered, so I didn't leave myself enough time to actually do much gameplay programming. I realized that 48 hours isn't really that long once you get down to work.. haha
Anyway thanks again :)
Very cool! :) Loved the visuals and good fun overall. But yea ultimately it does need some extra game mechanics.
Been on another computer and it worked (the original version).
Pretty interesting but also a little pointless. Engine works well.
Destroyed the planet on my first try, very easy and short game, but blowing the planet was kind of fun.
Pretty basic gameplay but realisation is very nice.
Great job there.
That was really satisfying to blow up a whole planet :P
That was technically impressive, and had nice presentation!
My final score was: 2201851
I enjoyed this one a lot :) Great work!
very cool graphics and effects. There isn't a whole lot to the game but I played it more than once! nice job
For some reason I had to use the version without shaders, even though I know my machine (a 2011 iMac) supports shaders. Don't worry though, I'm basing my graphical rating mostly on the video and screenshots.
Anyway, the game's graphically impressive, but the gameplay is very limited and there's no sound. Also, it seems that the vaporize power doesn't reload after a restart.
This is a very fun entry if a bit incomplete. I can't add much more than what the others have said so far. I do like the way you tried to balance vaporize by making it take a lot of time and disabling your ability to attack while it occurs.
I feel that perhaps there should be some other extra terrestrial objects or entities out there either as targets or as competitors.
Hit the vaporise bug here too. After restarting the game and using the camera controls... Boom!
Awesome game! I could only run no shader version, but it was pretty impressive. My only complaint (super super small) is the scores got added up a bit slow and audio would've been nice. Everything else is done really well though!
Done with 11 seconds to spare. At first I was thinking, what makes it a 'tiny world'? And then it hit me, of course - the comets! :D
Had to play without shaders but I still thought it looked pretty good. The gameplay is pretty simple, all you do is mash the mouse buttons as much as you can ... but the destruction of the world made it really fun to look at; I think some sound effects would have benefited this game greatly.
Either way, I enjoyed it for what it is. Nicely done :)
Cool, really liked the voxely style. Makes me want to experiment with voxel engines and minecraft cubes. Had that debug assertion error on the regular version - I have a DX11-capable card so assume I have shaders :) But the no-shader version looked pretty cool too.
This is surely one of the greatest technical feats in LD I've seen so far! As you said yourself in the postmorten, it's lacking maybe a little deeper gameplay, but I can definitely see this becoming an interesting game with some time invested! Are you considering expanding it? Would love to see! Cheers, Gabriel (ps. Tks for your review in Tiny Shard!)
I was playing the pixel shader version and i think is awesome! My vaporizer worked just fine even after restarts. ;)
Loved the score multiplier with 1sec:100%bonus ratio. In my first attempt i didn't manage to destroy the world and i got a lame 130k point while my second try gave me more than 2.340k points and made me happy. :)
Not much to it as far as game play, but I love the voxel work. Nice job :)
Nice! I'm really impressed by the technical effort that must have gone into this. I think the gameplay concept actually has some real promises! I'm imagining a game where you play as an evil god bent on destroying earth, meanwhile foiling the people's attempt att resurrecting the Champion of Mankind or something like that. (Maybe that sounds a bit weird)
Anyways, really good job! Don't know what else there is to mention, worked flawlessly for me.
Graphically, this is simply amazing (and very complete feeling)! ...it's also exactly what I'd imagine the world would look like if it were in Minecraft :P Restart animation was fabulous and a nice touch. I think it'd be interesting to have additional planets, and perhaps longer time and/or the ability for the world to regenerate maybe? All in all, a quick entertaining little game!
Very beautiful game! I couldn't destroy the planet though, found it too hard! (or maybe I didn't know how to make good use of the powers?)
Surprisingly fun as it is, but there's lots of potential here for a post-compo version. More ways to wreck the planet, people trying to defend their home world, maybe even simple physics modeling like detaching fragments.
pretty cool, but would've probably worked better with you defending from the comet storms and such rather than visa versa. The lack of conflict makes it difficult to get invested
I got a score of 3,163,870. Time bonus of 23 seconds. My strategy was to click on the planet's core repeatedly and use vaporize to get rid of everything else.
It's fun, but I didn't find out about firing meteors at the planet by clicking on it until after several plays!
There seems to be some kind of bug there actually...
Sometimes I get left with pieces of core I can't hit with meteors at all, and sometimes the game ends as soon as I vaporize the rock (at 23 seconds left).
Pretty cool! It could use some sound and maybe some hotkeys, but otherwise it's pretty fun! Might need something more for longer term play, though.
Not bad. Hotkeys to perform the "comet storm" and "vaporise" would be nice.
This game is definitely beautiful looking! And I love how powerful I feel as I destroy the world :P
I think the fun factor here is the eye candy of watching the world destroyed bit by bit (which is awesome), but once you get over the initial wow factor, there's really no challenge. You just keep clicking as fast as you can.
I'm not sure if the comets I throw with the mouse get projected where I'm clicking or just get thrown randomly at the earth but it would be **awesome** if they get thrown to where I click, and that all my methods of destruction were more direct (Think rotating the earth in order to destroy the other side).
And as you're destroying, the earth people will be building colonies or laser systems to try and defend themselves, so you'd be trying to quickly take care of those while focusing on destroying the entire planet. Maybe even have bonuses floating around space?
I could definitely see this being an epic game if you work your way up to earth, taking on smaller planets in the galaxies first and upgrading your equipment, and maybe each planet has a different perk etc..
You've got a fun mechanic, just needs a twist and some content and would be a really fun game!
"boom" "boom" "boom" is sorely missed in this game :-D Otherwise, it is quite fun to launch asteroids at the planet and see what happens :-) The stars in the background and the 100% animation are very nice touches.
Glad you provided an alternate non-shader build so I could try it out! I only ever got the 'vaporize' button to work once, so I'm not sure if that was a bug or what? It's quite amusing to try and annihilate the planet, though it feels a bit more like a toy than a game for some reason. I really enjoyed the planet restore effect.
Ok! Now I want comet storms to be implemented in Minecraft! There wasn't much to do but the animations are AWESOME.
Nice game, but here's a bug:
When the window is located on another screen (in this case, a screen left of the primary one) it doesn't fire the comets right.
Nice game idea!
Destroying worlds is even more fun than I thought :-)
More ways to the destroy the world would make it even cooler
Well Done!
Really enjoyed it ^^
Do you have any tips for someone trying to learn Voxels?
Andresh - I am actually doing a lot of videos on making a voxel engine at the moment!
See my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/alwaysgeeky
I am also going to be doing some articles and posting some information on here with regards to my Voxel Engine soon! :)
I like the voxel world and the particle effects and it is fun to destroy the planet. Audio would have been great and gameplay is a bit limited. Powers which strengthen each other or are good against different layers of the planets could have been an option.
Pretty cool! Very satisfying to see it kind of peel apart like that. Unique take on the tiny-world-destruction idea! I think it's too hard, though. (My highscore was 60%, and I played it 6 times. Maybe I'd beat it if I played another 4 times.) I think this game could go far!
Im actually one of the people that are watching those videos ^^ so far they are good but lack some background as of what the thought proces was but im really enjoying them ^^
You using ray-tracing btw?
Pretty satisfying to wreck a planet, just needed some audio to help the mood of destruction! hehe
Also, the regeneration effect is neat.
I played NO SHADERS version on my old notebook. I like voxels! ;) My Final Score: 102378
Great game! I played on linux with Wine and the shaders version ran fine.
Final score: 123256.
I guess I destroyed 89% of the planet.
Good game, but lacks replay factor!
Good work. =)
P.S.: I needed to manually select my NVIDIA driver to run the game, the integrated Intel board wouldn't play it (gave the assert error).
I like that it's fun. I dislike that the actual gameplay is too limited. There's too little control, too much a clickfest. However, I do think that the technology, with a bit more thought, has a lot of potential and could become the ultimate planet smasher [tm]
My score is 52975. Too bad there is no audio besides that very fun game.
looks great but i cant figure out what to do.. everything i fire at the earth just goes over the top of it ;(
This was really fun for how simple it was. It took me reading the readme to realize I could click to launch asteroids, but when I did, it got surprisingly addicting. Great work.
Simple, yet fun game!
I had a little bit of lag with the vaporize power...
Nice voxel based game.
It's really fun to destry the planet.

I just tried to play and it on a 64 bit Windows 7 PC and got the following error:
