April 20th-23rd 2012 :: 10 Year Anniversary! :: Theme: Tiny World
Narrow -
You're a black box. You love to travel around world enjoying land. However the world is not big enough. Let's walk as much as possible and score points before this place be filled.
Control: Arrow Keys only.
HowTo: Move to score points, diagonal one will gain lot. Population growth shows interval between arrival of boxes. Box frame act as indicator before real box come.
Note: on applet sometimes you need to reload twice, or it takes long time to load. I made it roughly from desktop one so please don't press exit on applet.

This has a very nice charm to it, controls and mechanics are easy to understand :)
Nice idea, although my score never seemed to go up. Having some positive areas or powerups to get to would probably give it more replayability.
Not bad! Good idea.
Maybe make the screen area bigger?
Cheers and congratulations!
PS.-To play I had to play a game and refresh the explorer (Chrome, in Firefox didn't work) because the right key to start didn't make anything.
Sorry for late reply, the browser keeping cache too long after site crashed. Thank you all for trying.
@Transmit @orgarus
The applet one has small problem. It runs, but on diff browser keyListener doesn't respond. On other case you need to wait looong time before it loads. Thanks for your info.
@schizofunky @MrDanH
Thanks! it encourages me to improve next version. To gain score, you need to move. Diagonal move gains big points.
Pretty cool idea, but I think it lacked a bit. Mainly I was just sitting there most of the time until I was inevitably screwed. I think you did an excellent job making an intuitive game that works well - just adding some more to it would be good.
@demonpants
Thanks! glad to see more people like this simple concept. I admit that it's to hard, color blocks take long time to disappear and you only score on diagonal move. I'll reduce the growth rate and make it easier.
I love pixelated square games, but I still am to to sure how to work this one...I found out that if you mash the arrow keys randomly you will get a very high score...My best is 1200
Ah, took me a bit to figure out what was going on - maybe you want to add instructions. I don't really understand the population growth label - what does it mean? Some variation in gameplay could make this interesting!
For all commenters above this comment, I have played and rated yours. Thanks again for trying ;D
@Rabbits
I love pixelated art so I make this. Yes, when you mashed it sure it did diagonal move, which turn to big gain.
@johnfn
I'll edit this page for some instruction. Thanks for the advice. That growth shows how fast new population will come. So if it shows more than 60%, we're f**ked ;)
Thanks Kitch. I managed to pust sound in last hour. Somebody find it kinda annoying :P Have to improve it.
Man, this game ran really really slow on my system (Ubuntu on a Pentium M). I had to literally hold down the arrow keys for two seconds to move between menu choices. One in-game things seemed a bit better, though there was still a good deal of latency on movement. As for the actual game -- the music was great. The colors of the enemy boxes were nice. The hero was kind of boring looking. The game of avoidance was fun, especially when you could just narrowly dodge the transition of a wireframe to a solid. Things I didn't understand include what the boxes had to do with population growth, if there was any pattern to how the colored squares grew or if there was any other strategy than madly run around. Overall, not a bad Qix-like.
Thanks for your info. Yes I made it pixelated so everything are box. It's quide odd runs slow on linux. Wireframe is an indicator for one second before the real solid box (that you should avoid) comes. Population growth is scala how fast interval between box arrival.

Yeah unfortunately :( I couldn't find the root of evil now, need to fix it. However it works well on Firefox. Thanks for coming though.
good idea, but it lacks something which makes me want to play more than 2 times. The audio is a bit annoying. It gives me good sensations, but also I feel like something is missing, maybe a goal.
7633 :DD
Acctually fun game, and never ever seen Gameplay-Idea :D like it :)
Althrough it crashes sometimes.
I agree with a previous comment about mainly just sitting still until you have to move and by then you have nowhere to go. Nice concept though, pretty orinigal and works well with the theme. 436 steps here.
Thanks for trying, I gave visit to your page :)
@Monkey Armada: sorry I lack of art skill. need to find someone to fix this ;D
@matheus23: wow awesome, I only score 2k on testing :D
@danblack: yeah but you can't score if you stay still ;)
Since I can only do web games for now, and because the web version doesn't work, I can't rate this currently. I'm commenting here so that this shows up in my rated games section so that I can come back later and play when I can do downloads.
@Pierrec: thanks! great to hear someone like it. I really want to make post-compo version now :D
@thristhart: that's ok. I'll wait for it :) sorry for the trouble.
@Th3dz
Ouw that's not good. I hope you want to use the jar version :| thanks for trying.
Interesting. I oddly liked the music it had, I think because it fit the game.
Couldn't get it to work without downloading it, but it was well worth the download. This is a nice, fast-paced arcade game where the environment is constantly changing - fast reflexes are the key to survival as the world shifts and shrinks around you. The music won't win awards, but it fits the graphical style of the game nicely: I'd call it the "Flatland Theme" if it doesn't have a name already.
The only issue I have is that the scoring doesn't make much sense. I think time-based rather than movement-based would be more appropriate.
Thank you, Ryusui!
You really shouldn't award the music. I created it in 20 seconds without sense of art. Yeah I think time is better. I thought it would be fun to force player to move around o.O
I liked it. I would put some sounds and make the black square move faster (there are time in which it's only luck what allows you to survive).
Web link didn't work for me, but jar did.
Pretty cool for such a simple game. It would be cool if there was also something on the field that you got bonus points for colliding with.
The applet is naughty, I want to fix it soon. Thanks for trying :)
Interesting idea... I would like to see it using mouse or touch controls.
I think there should be a game over screen with a pause. I think I got up over 2000 points, but I was moving when I died and then I was at the title screen.
This is one of those games where the idea is original and works really well, so the simple graphics work too. Also, the increase in the generation rate works in increasing the difficulty and increasing the tension.
You could develop this more, add pickups, who knows. Anyway, way to actually produce an original game! I appreciate it.
Oh yeah...procedurally generated music?! Random blippiness works for this game. Cool.
@Hume
Really glad to hear that. I'll remember your (and others) advice to make a better version. Thank you very much!
A little buggy (I got stuck at the main menu a couple times) but very nice interpretation of the theme. Fun, cool little game. Needs music!

Couldnt get the web link to work on firefox. Downloaded the game and got two lives in before it crashed for me. It was good for those couple of turns though.
