Curse Of Grimwood

by digital_sorceress - 48 Hour Compo Entry

This is for WINDOWS only. It is unlikely to run through WINE.
================================

This is a multi-character Action-RPG with a top-down view, reminiscent of games like Diablo.

My interpretation of the theme was that the game would take place on a small fabled island, like Atlantis or something. But I'll be the first to admit that Grimwood Isle doesn't feel all that small when playing. :/

With four heros (a Warrior, a Thief, a Wizard, and a Priest), your objective is to kill all the undead monsters. All heroes must survive.

Each hero has unique strengths and weaknesses, whether it be speed, armor, damage, or range. Each hero also has a special ability, and using these abilities wisely is crucial to victory.

Control with keyboard and mouse:
================================
Cursor Keys+CTRL -- Control lead character (can do this with mouse)
F/S/W -- Change ally behaviour (can do this with mouse)
1234 -- Set Hero as Leader (can do this with mouse)
X - Use Special Ability
Escape -- Return to Title Screen, or Exit.

This game uses opengl, so you can use FRAPS to make gameplay videos should you wish to.

Fun! Neat graphics, although the controls took a bit getting used to. Good job!

Great graphics and atmosphere! Definitely takes getting used to but after that it's alright!

Couldn't ever get mouse movement to work though, I feel like that would have been a good experience!

I couldn't run it on win7 x64, it give me a runtime error 11, division by zero. I played it on a win xp virtual machine. I really like the mood of the game, very diablo-y. I liked how character abilities allow for different strats, that's break the usual monotony you could have in action - rpg.

Sorry, I'm on Linux. I'm only posting because your entry shows up when I search for Linux and I want to get it off my queue. :) Screenshot looks great though!

I distinctly remember the art style from your last entry, and thought it was really neat. I think you've done even better this time. The game is pretty good but at the same time I felt like I didn't know how to make the fighter and the thief actually attack when I was controlling them. Yes, I had the space bar but that depleted their "mana" power quickly.

dr_soda: I'd forgotten to write in the description that the CTRL key is attack. Thank-you all for your comments. ^_^

Looks really REALLY cool! but i'm on linux :C

The graphics were phenomenal! Would have been nice to know I had limited mana XD. There I was spamming away on space, realising about 30 undead through I was out of healing. oops!

Loved the graphics and the general idea. It was really fun to run around with the small band healing and using the area spells, although getting your allies stuck in corners and having to babysit them out of those was kinda annoying.
A game over screen was sorely missed, but other than that, great game :-)

The gameplay can get a bit samey eventually, but overall this is a really solid entry. I like that you have a bit of an economy limited by the party's mana resources. Good job!

Awesome graphics! I like how you can switch between the members. Yeah, the theme is not really there, but the mood is! :)

Lovely game, the graphics and sound create a very nice atmosphere! I wasn't too sure what the commands did in the bottom right, maybe need some text rollovers for those?

My kind of game! I really liked the premise of switching between the characters, setting their behaviour, and using their abilities wisely.

This shone through in the game whether I was sending the priest and wizard ahead to attack things from range, tanking with the warrior, or keeping the priest back to heal the others. With more abilities, and more useful AI/choices of behaviour (e.g. aggressive/defensive) you could have the basis for a good, old, dungeon-crawler on your hands.

Alas, a few things weren't communicated such as the limited mana, or even what the special abilities actually did. And the map was a bit maze-like because it didn't have much in the way of monuments or markers for me to orientate myself. I could get enemies from range without them closing me down and my party also got in my way from time to time, but these things aside, I enjoyed what was on show.

Completed RPG in 48 hours? This is neat!
There was a minor bugs, but nothing critical.

Really well made for being done in 48 hours, I would love to see the source and a timelapse/livestream for it.
That being said the collisions need work, the way they made your party members all but useless unless you micromanage them all, including the way they like to get stuck in each other or you.

Amazing job! Loved the graphics and the music. The gameplay was pretty fun, but it wasn't enough to make me want to hunt down all 100 enemies, so I don't know what happens at the end of the game. The pathfinding of the team mates was pretty good too, but they would often get stuck on corners and things like that. But, you did a really great job, especially for only 48 hours!

Really good entry! The graphics is simple, but effective (so is the music). Finding and killing all the undeads gets boring after a while, but it's a base for an interesting game!

Where is the source code? There is a folder in the zip file named "sources" but it is empty.

It's a RPG extrrrrravaganza!

Nice work. It's fun and moody, and could be xtended beautifully.

I've always hated games with limited mana. It's like games with limited continues. If you get this far spending this much, you might as well give up and start over. It's also like... is this an ability, or a cheap trick from the mana store? Anyway, goes without saying I didn't try again after I ran out of priest mana and died. Maybe the wizard should steal mana from enemies. Anything that makes it so you aren't running on batteries.

The game could've felt more cooperative if you could push your allies out of the way when you hit them (like the difference between Starcraft 1 and 2). Right now it feels like your AI buddies are these guys:

(watch for about a minute)

Everything else was pretty awesome. Impressive for a 48 hour compo game.

May 8, 2012 @ 5:20am

Wow nice achievement for 48h.
The only really annoying thing was that your party member sometimes like to get stuck. ;)

This is pretty cool! I like the graphical style, and the music gives it a good sense of atmosphere. It's fun to explore, and the combat is tactical. I still haven't managed to complete it though...

Simple graphics worked well. A lot of features in this game to implement in 48 hours, nice work.
