Nanonaut - an ambitions 72-hour jam entry for Ludum Dare #23.

* Stargates
* Randomly generated planets
* 5 different monsters

We are quite proud of what we have accomplished in such a short time, but there were a few features that couldn't make it into the game before the deadline. Most notably, an end-goal and persistent worlds. However, we do plan to continue working on this game and fleshing out all of its intended features in a post-dare version. For now, enjoy what we've completed in the past 72 hours of sleepless nights and no showers!

(controls and game notes are on the bottom of the game's webpage.)

There isn't a preloader so make sure you give it sometime to load first.

The monsters seem a bit overpowered and I'm not sure if there's any way to heal up/improve weapons.

The game page has pictures on how to heal. =]

I'm blown away by the music and the concept - the graphics aren't to shabby either

this is a great little game - although it definitely could be improved (more features(weapons?) & better balance)

overall very well done

All I can really say is "wow."
The mood was excellent, the aesthetic is consistent, the music was brilliant, and I love the general concept. Excellent work!

This was cool, can't wait to see what you do with it post-ludum. I kinda wish I didn't have to go back to my ship after every planet to heal (maybe I just suck though), especially when the music was just starting to take off. But I'm sure that will be better once you get more time to balance it.

Good work! A good start, but as you said without a goal it's hard to find motivation to keep playing. The combat is a bit too difficult, especially since the controls aren't super responsive. Still, lots of good stuff here, very promising.

@Zemmi I'm quite terrible at making things balanced the first time around so things usually end up quite difficult. Mainly because I worry about it being to easy. Hah!

Excellent audio, fitting art, creating nice mood. I could easily imagine how good this could be...
Sadly since in current state all you can do is randomly wander dimensions (I've tried about ten or more, never found any data) and you can't do much more then fight with monsters and enjoy mood.... If the actual combat would be better (clunky controls, shooting possible only while standing, making it really hard to kill some of the monsters and in not very challenging way) I'd probably stay at it more.
Nevertheless, I'm really looking forward to postcompo version.

To everyone - my name's Chris and I made the music and audio for this game. I'm glad you guys are enjoying it, and I appreciate your comments on the audio! You can download the songs here for free if you wish: http://jitterbones.bandcamp.com/album/nanonaut-soundtrack

Hopefully we will have more music in the fully fleshed out post-compo version. I am excited about this game!

Charming graphics, nice music, very cool concept. The combat felt a bit clunky however and there was a bug after I died the first time where my UI went missing. Also, the game could really use some driving goals behind it. Other than that this was quite fun and I love what you guys acomplished in the time you had!

Nice pixel art and great audio. Controls drove me a little nuts though. Can't fire while moving and when turning, he always takes a step forward so you can't turn in place.

This is pretty awesome. A lot of high-quality content, here. Naturally, here are a few pieces now but an interesting game could easily emerge from here.

I agree with the others that the controls can be a little clunky, but I know how easy it is to run out of time to tweak stuff like that. ;)

I think it's mostly because the character is limited to moving one square at a time (is this for a technical reason?), but during the time he's moving to the next square, you're "disabled" from moving in other directions or shooting.

You guys should join forces with me so I have some gameplay for planetary landings. ;)

Keep it up! (I'm also a sucker for space games, of course.)

Lovely little game, especially the music. But what am I supposed to do on the planets except shooting stuff?

This was really exciting to play! I absolutely loved dialling a random stargate. Each encounter kinda felt like the Fallout encounters. Loved the different enemy types as well.

My main issues were with the character controls (too slow & sluggish) and not really understanding what I was supposed to do on each planet that I visited.

Overall great stuff guys :)

Music was wonderful, the idea of warping to planets was nice and the few planets I went to had a lot of visual variety. The combat felt a little robotic though, I wasn't sure what to do besides spam lasers. I didn't realize you procedurally generated the worlds until after I played, that's pretty wacky. If you work on the game feel for combat and add more of an objective this could be pretty neat.

Good looking game and excellent sound. About the game play is difficult to kill the enemies (relatively fast and tough)if only the laser can be fired when standing, but it isn't nothing can't be improved and balanced.

I liked the concept! If guys could put some objetives and power ups it would be an amazing game.

The concept and graphics are nice but the controls to move around and shoot seem a bit stiff

Stargates!!! You got me here. Best game ever! :) Really liked the idea and everything audio/visual/theme etc. The only thing I thought was not so fun was the fighting, because I had no way to not get hit when fighting enemies. I really hope you move this game further then the LD version. Simon

Only one thing to say: when do I actually play the final version? This was super fun you guys! Thank you!
