December 16th-19th 2011 :: Theme: Alone
**** USE ARROW KEYS TO MOVE AND SPACE TO SHOOT ****
It's kinda lame ;) I ran out of time to add more enemies, levels and so on.. But I did something.
Tested on Linux and Windows. A Mac friend could not run the java applet, can someone with a Mac give me some feedback on either the applet or from the zip file. So I know for future projects. Thanks
The source is a last minute mess but feel free ;)
!UPDATE: The web entry has been repacked and went from 24MB to ~1MB ;)
And the others is a zip file that contains a jar. Double click on it or in a terminal/console: java -jar LSM_Run.jar

It was fun. I wasn't able to beat the boss, despite making it through the entire level without dying once on the first try. Can't say I see how this fits more with the theme 'alone' than any simple platformer in general, though.
It's quite fun, but I actually got to the boss without shooting once, I thought you had to jump them :D
Killing the boss was rather difficult without shooting, if not impossible haha.
The enemy is way to easy and I feel bad that I ran out of time to add more.. and the boss, well I made it when it was 30mins to go of the time so it sucks ;)
@Sko, I had some trouble to come up with an idea for the "alone" theme, so your right about that.
@Nibelung, thanks for that feedback, that means I should inform my players of the controls before they start playing. I have a menu if you press escape, but the menu should be before the game starts or something.
Btw, I'm going to use some of the ideas I came up with during this competition and everyone’s feedback to make a "real" balanced game. Like Contra ;)
It wasn't very challenging until the boss, which is too hard compared to the rest of the enemies. I can't seem to see the alone theme here besides that the player is the only human, is that what you were after? The music and the sound effects are OK.
@summaky, it was kinda what I had in my mind but as I did not finish the "intro", the plot is missing.
And for the music/effects I used autotracker-bottomup and sfxr, so I can not take any credit for that.
Not sure what's wrong, but it immediately tells me that I've died, and to press the action key to continue. After some random key mashing, hitting the space bar makes it go black, then fade to red and tell me I've died again. It doesn't really stop...
Ubuntu. Oracle JRE, not OpenJDK.
Thanks
@Mjiig, sorry for the lack of information on what key to use ;/ and I can not figure out why that is happening to you, I use openSUSE with Oracles JRE 1.6 and it is also tested on Ubuntu..
cool but a bit easy, the boss especialy (though when he showed up it totally surprised me, he shot me in the face immediately before i even knew he was there). after looking at his bullet pattern for a second though...just stand on the floor, he can't hit you there, and jump and shoot as he goes up, he comes back down just in time to get hit and you're back on the ground safe by the time he fires :D Love the music.
Thank you for playing Raptor85 and nice observations on the "boss" ;)
It controls well, but it lacks pretty much the rest. The music was nice. I reached the boss and I didn't understand if I was killed or if I beat it. I don't recall getting hit. I loved the moving platform jump sound bug. :D
Animation is charming, and the music is cool. Not much to do in it! But at least the basics work.
Thanks for playing people! As I have said before, this game is rather lame and can improve in many ways!
@Make A Game, haha yeah the moving platform bug is just really bad collision detection by me ;) And it is not just only for the moving platforms, if you try to move against a wall and quickly move the other way, you will go through the wall :p
@Stargoat, I spent a little bit to much time on the animation on the dude because it was really fun and I have not done such animation in a long time, so thanks for that ;D
PS. Drunk comment so errors may occur... lol
I know it probably wasn't intended, but I was thoroughly amused by the fact that by holding both arrow keys your character does the walking animation in place.
Not a bad attempt, but some quick easy gameplay changes would have made it more enjoyable, for example making movement faster and jumping less "floaty".
The audio is nice, and the walk animation for the player looks surprisingly good and smooth for a stick figure. I didn't really like the basic concept though, since it's been tried so many times before.
I like it; controls are tight and responsive.
Had no trouble actually getting through the level. Died to the boss and got 5301 points. Having the enemies throughout the level do damage, and having little health pickups would probably be a nice addition to keep it interesting.
@Drebin, actually you get hurt by the enemy when they hit you and overtime you will regenerate your health. But because the game is extremely unbalanced the people who play the game will not notice this. I have analyzed my friends when they play the game and they did not notice that.
The character does also turn to red the more hits it takes ;p

Simple game, lacked depth.
