Nihil

by vibgyor - Jam Entry

You wander lost in a decaying world of abandonment where your worst nightmares lurk. . .

Primarily inspired by horror author, Thomas Ligotti, this is a survival horror roguelike and my first game. Much of the code is based on the libtcod tutorial by Jotaf located on Roguebasin.

There is no particular goal, but that's because I didn't have enough time add one to the game.

The tools I used were Python, libtcod, Pygame (for sound), and py2exe.

There is a bug where when you close the game an error pops up that says "See the logfile 'C:\path\to\game\Nihil.exe.log' for details." Ignore that. It doesn't affect the game. I'm sure how to fix that. Sorry.

Heh, sorry about the large wav. Due to my own ignorance, I couldn't seem to figure out out to get the music to queue up, so I put them all in one file. :P There were originally three songs.

This is probably the first roguelike I've ever played. Before
I died the first time it was somewhat immersive (sound is
nice). Then the items just repeated too often and dying
became something regular.

This game has probably to most minimal art style, which is
okay with me, but the filesize is almost 200mb. Not too much
of a problem in this day and age but yeah.

185 MB?!?!? How did you managed in 72 hours?

I think this is the first rougelike I've played (if you don't count desktop dungeons). I found the atmosphere and mood pretty powerful, I'm surprised you managed to achieve that with such primitive graphics. I also liked the audio. I found the game pretty confusing (maybe that's part of being a rougelike? or due to my lack of experience with them?) and I think I'd have enjoyed it more with a bit more direction, though that would probably have detracted from the confused, abandoned atmosphere you created here.

Overall - good.

An hour to download... Yeah, how DO you manage 185 MB in 72 hours? Regardless, I'll be back. Roguelikes = <3.

Crashes on start for me. :( No error message, just stops responding when I choose Play.

My only issue is that my screen is only 600 pixels high. Because windows insists on having a title bar, the last line of text was always hidden, so I would never know what the last message was. Awesome sound!

I like the random level generation. The background sound file was unnecessarily large and could have been shrunken much more. Brings back the good ol' memories of ASCII art games! :)

185 MB :O Anyway, gameplay was a bit irritating, I kept dying without knowing why, and had no goal, so there was nothing I could work towards. Nice random leven generation! :D

Good concept, could perhaps be a bit more easily playable but I dig the atmosphere this tries to evoke.

As mentioned, shame on you for including a huge .wav file ;) Also, it would be nice if your background audio was normalized.

The writing and sound make this. Great atmosphere.

It's a shame about the lack of any goal or means to preserve the player's sanity.
