The graphical style was really nice and the gameplay, while it was easy and simple, was fun to play. Would had liked a circle of lightning around your player since most of the times i had troubles checking my surrounding, especially on corridor-like spots.
Another thing i could mention is that its a little short, and you have no indication that the game has an end (looked like a survive till the end game to me, but with no score).
I love the graphical style, but it's too bad that there's no story or context, otherwise it would have been awesome !
hey stargoat, cool game. i really like the graphics/lighting, though i was thinking the same thing as jilius about having the light circle. too bad the sound didn't work, as i think that could have added a lot. i still am a bit confused about what causes it to end. the first time i played it stopped abruptly and i only ever saw a few mobs. second time i got swarmed a bunch and it felt more exciting, but then it ended suddenly again. third time the cave generator just gave me a little one-room cave in the center. :p would definitely love to see this as a realtime roguelike with some more stuff in it.
btw, i added a strategy guide on my game's entry page. you should check it out.
Haha, yeah I agree with all of this. I had intended to have a small light circle around the player... not sure why it didn't get in.
The cave generation is kind of dodgy. A lot of quick fixes to make it work *most of the time*, but there's a small chance that it'll only generate a small cave. The weird enemy spawning is based on a few things... firstly, if you're in a small area, the closest valid area for a monster to spawn could actually be quite long in walk distance. Monsters have timed life, since the next wave won't spawn unless there are no monsters, and the number of them in a wave is based on the total number that you've killed (to a maximum of 20). The length of the game is based on the game's timer instead of number of waves fought (in retrospect this was a terrible idea).
All of these together make a kind of inconsistent experience!
Wheeeeeee.
I love the lighting so much, I just gotta say. It was also cool how the monsters were glowing eyes in the darkness before you turned to look at them. Blasting apart those monsters was a good time, and the darkness helped enhance the feeling of being alone in a cavern. Not sure I liked the choice of yellow for the cave walls, though.
Who need flashy graphics when you have cave art ascii? Brilliant art style :D
I liked this one, it was fun and simple.
I like the graphics, because especially it's on old style, and the lighting. The mood is also well done - there're something with red eyes hunting you around. Fun game!
Very moody game, nice use of simple graphics. I missed some basic sound effects, and I didn't like that it just exits when the game is over.
Very interesting roguelike. I could swear the cave changed a few times while I was walking around. Maybe it was because of the darkness and limited lit areas. The bat-like things going after you really boosts the whole mood factor. One thing though, please no 768 pixels tall windows. They are really problematic.
Loved the style, absolutely no idea what I was meant to do though.
I got nommed by bats :/
Works well under WINE, tried to compile a linux build but it's missing a dep in the source, libtcod.h
oh right, you'll need http://doryen.eptalys.net/libtcod/ if you want to compile it.
The lighting is cool, the graphical style is cool, the random generation is cool... Basically, everything about this game is really cool. It's a shame about the lack of sound.
I really like the dynamic light effect. If the level scrolled when the player moved then the torch beam would not keep changing angle though, might be a nice change to make.
Great game! Good work. ... I didn't realise I could shoot the first time I played! :p
Like a few others have said it, it could have been better if you'd had time to get the sound working and maybe add a small circle of light all around the player and perhaps have the map scroll or the pointer position update as you move so that walking around the map doesn't cause your aim to change. But overall a great entry :)

I really like the graphical style, I must say :-). Something about overhead line of sight is very aesthetically pleasing.
