Alone in the Crane

A, D - move crane

A long time ago in galaxy far, far away there was very pretty princess who lived in big, big magic crane tower.
She was there alone and nobody cared to visit her.
Every day she was looking from the top of her tower for handsome prince, who will save her and provide entertainment.
Will you be her Prince Charming?

Kinda fun, but, to be honest - nothing special - and the whole idea of tetris-like construction of a ladder was already used in earlier Ludum Dare. Still, above-than-average entry.

I think it's a pretty creative idea to use Tetris mechanics to build stairs, so I gave you some points for that. Unfortunately it didn't end up being all that fun. The character graphics are pretty good, but the lighting/background was very annoying. Overall, not too bad, but not too good either. I liked the music and silly voices.

It took me a few tries before I understood what I was supposed to do. The game has neat music but it's hard to get past the distracting visuals. I think it could have been polished into a very neat game, given enough time.

I liked the overall presentation, looks solid and the music is very cool. But didn't enjoy the controls and the lighting.

Great little game. I thought the mechanic was really smart. I know kibertoad said it's been done before, but seriously there are hundreds of games every LD, it's not like we can expect everyone to play all of them.

The graphics are solid, the lighting is a bit weird but it's not a big deal. Really liked the textures on the blocks and the screen shake when they dropped, gave them a lot of weight. I think there's a lot more polish here than most people are seeing.

Ouch, I'm glad I didn't get such a sour first post... At least hit him with some constructive criticism.

For those complaining about this not being innovative or comparing it to an earlier LD entry from this year. Check out Tuper Tario Tros. from 2009. It's an awesome Tetris/Platformer experiment, goes beyond just using the Tetrominos as platforms, and includes Tetris gameplay! It was also a precursor to Blocks That Matter.

I'm really curious as to where this will fall for innovation in the ranking...

As far as this game goes...

The graphics might look great, but the changes you make to the lighting make the game ugly. Visually, something is off about the colour scheme, maybe someone more artsy than I, can put their finger on it.

Controls are awkward and involved, maybe consider doing something similar to Tuper Tario Tros. and swap between game modes. That might also help with the awkward camera once the tower gets too tall.

Would have loved to see a post-mortem on this. Technically it's a fully realized idea, but everything "off" just enough to sap the game of it's "fun".

Awesome little jam game with a bit of flair, humour, and a nice spin on platformer genre. With some polish and a few more features this would be a fun little time waster.
