No Mother Alone

by brodavi - 48 Hour Compo Entry

I was learning Javascript and Canvas as I was making this, my first game ever. Uh. So the code is terrible, and I've only tested it with chrome. And it works OK with chrome. Not great, but OK. I don't know if Firefox will work. Sorry.

So yeah, thanks. This was fun. Oh I never had a github account either, so if something is wrong with that, I'm sorry again.

[EDIT3]
Oops. I misunderstood the rules. I thought public domain/creative commons sound effects/music were usable. I withdraw my entry. I'll be sure to follow the rules next go around :P

[EDIT2]

Figured out how to host via github. Neat!

[EDIT]

Instructions and more about the game:

"Your Mother was shopping. She said wait here, she had to go get some crackers. That was a long time ago. Go look for her."

You are a small child. You feel as though you are lost and alone, and must go look for your mother.

Hit SPACE to look up.
Hit X to call to mommy.
Use LEFT and RIGHT to walk down aisle.
When you find an intersection, use UP or DOWN to switch aisles.

Hitting SPACE to look up doesn't really do anything gameplay-wise. I originally wanted there to be many adults and you had to find your mother among them.

Hitting X will cry for your mother. If she is on that isle, she will respond. If not, you will get a message telling you as much.

At an intersection between aisles, hitting UP or DOWN will traverse aisles.

You only have 60 seconds (or else the world ends), and you can only cry once every 10 seconds or so.

I'll admit it's not much of a game. I've never made a game before. I also never wrote to Canvas before, and only barely played with Javascript before. I'll do better next time :) Sorry I don't have hosting. But it's just an unzip and pointing your browser at index.html.

I like the theme, but there is not too much game.

And I think you should link to it in a way so the game starts after using the link.

nice interpretation for this theme. You have a lot of supermarket products :) The navigation for changing supermarket aisle is not easy to handle, I tried 2-3 times before understanding...

You should change your web link to actually go to the game not your github page.

Thanks for the comments, guys! :)

@andrebeton : yes, not much game at all. I had originally wanted other adults, and the whole point of 'looking up' was to look at their faces to find your mother amongst them. But, you know. 2 days and all. :P I actually had it set up where it was starting as soon as you load the page, but it was having some problems, so I changed it to a start button. Did I mention I have no idea what I'm doing?

@Benjamin : Thanks. Yes, I wanted to add a 'transition animation', but didn't have time, and I didn't know how to do that anyway.

@kato9 : I would love to, but I have never hosted anything before. I couldn't find any free hosting that let me serve up a javascript game.

Can't figure out how to play.

I quite liked this :) Nice interpretation of the theme, with the added creepiness of a lost child and the death of a universe amidst plaintiff cries of "mama".

Did you do the music yourself? If so, awesome! If not, you might want to be aware that you aren't allowed to use music you didn't do in compo games.

No, I didn't make the music. I thought we could use sound effects/music if they were public domain. Oops. Thanks for pointing this out!

I love this game, despite not really getting anywhere with it. I couldn't seem to get the aisle changing working.
All of your links link to the web game, which is weird.

Love the concept! :)
