Escape from Cube Mountain

by Kharza - 48 Hour Competition Entry

My first time trying this, I created a simple "chase to the border" game. The objective is to make it to the edge of the map.

I used xna game studio 4, paint.net, and sfxr. 3D objects were created by just typing out the coordinates in code as they are all simple primitives. Terrain is random seed based so each level is the same.

I took one peek at some old code for camera axis vector extraction, but other than that it was all done on the fly.

Plays well on netbooks, and controls with either keyboard or 360 gamepad.

REQUIREMENTS:
Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7
XNA Framework Redist: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=20914
.NET Framework 4.0 Redist: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17851

The first level is so confusing, info about powerup could help, but i enjoy it, the game is more and more challenging, nice start.I played with keyboard too lazy to get my joypad.

Really cool. I could see it having some kind of cyberpunk 'Running Man' vibe if you expanded on it.

Could use some more obstacles or higher/lower terrain variations. I was surprised by how the sound makes those cubes so menacing.

It was frequently very to difficult to see myself as a cube would pop up from behind me and due to its size over shadow the player making it hard to see where I am going next.

Also the sound did make the cubes scarier than imaginable.

Loved the sound - really creepy. The map is pretty bland, a bit more variety there could make a real improvement.

Thanks for playing! I had done some fractal terrain that is much better in the past, but I couldn't remember exactly how I did it, so I went with just randomized heights and 2 smoothing passes. They vary per level, but are somewhat similar. I had to be sure things weren't too steep so the camera didn't drift into the ground.

The sound makes this very creepy! Nice gameplay too, I was constantly escaping at the last second. Appreciated the XBox controller support.

I moved last weekend and shut off my net service. Let me know if the links go bad and I'll try to move it elsewhere. And thanks for the feedback!
