Take One of These

by Kynrael - Competition Entry

EDIT : Using dropbox now; added source and exe for windows

It is still quite buggy and a lot of the features I wanted implemented aren't... You might have to restart sometimes.
Goal is to kill monsters and progress in levels to get a nice rank at the end (death).
Time defeated me in the worst way : it is finished, but not as I wanted.

I do hope you have fun playing though :D

I : Inventory
R : Remove Armor
S : Sheath sword
P : Wait a turn
A : Attack
E : Equip weapon
U : Use item
W : Wear armor
D : When in Inventory, drop an item
SPACE : When SPACE lights up in the bottom right corner, press the Space Bar. It will show you a text description of a game event (ex : putting on armor)
Arrows : Move
Goal : reach red square for new map

Impressive work with the map generation, though I did end up reaching a level where you couldn't reach the exit http://i.imgur.com/zqQdm.png

This is obviously a just-getting-started kind of prototype, but this is a real solid core, and fleshed out with balancing and polish I could see this being an entertaining time sink. Great work for LD, obviously!

Cool little roguelike. It took me a little while to figure out how attacking worked, since there's no feedback, but I worked it out. :D

Couldn't find out my rating though - when I got bored and tried to get killed, the enemies actually increased my health when they hit me. Bug? I was level 11ish or something by that point.

Had that bug twice. Indeed, it still needs a lot of polish, balancing, etc... Might do it if I have some spare time actually :) As the core is indeed globally done, it shouldn't require massive work (apart on the generation bug maybe).

Yeah, probably a bug. The last hours were quite hectic and I cut corners, so I might have missed a bug like that in combat... negative value or something.

Another very bad bug is that with the best armor on, you're invincible. Which kills the fun (so little tip, don't wear ice armor, if you want to enjoy the game!).

Normally, you should get some feedback by pressing SPACE after an attack ? It pops up each time an event occurs (using item, looking at item, combat, etc). I'll update entry description so people don't have to figure this out.

simplistic but i still like it.

I like the level generation and being able to roam around. I seemed to have been forcefully evicted from the game with rank Thief on several occasions. I wanted to keep playing.

Ok, I think I was probably dying. I've got the controls figured out now! Pretty fun =) I think there was one situation where I was surrounded by 4 monsters and kept hitting space and my HP actually was going up. I thought that was odd!

More than anything, I kept wanting to find awesome new weapons/armor I hadn't seen before.

Thanks for the comment ! Yes, indeed, you were dying. That was the last 10 minute brush up so it's not very explicative.

The giving HP bug seems to be quite recurrent too, probably with ice armor on and against goblins/orcs.

I would have loved to put loads of items in, it is something that's kind of missing in the original rogue. As people seem to enjoy playing it, I'll probably take the time to really polish this !

Confusing! When it started I had no idea what was going on or where the player was.

Sometimes when I'm next to an enemy it will tell me to press space, sometimes it won't. No idea why.

No in-game instructions = bad.

Looking at instructions again, it is very odd to me that pressing space does not actually do anything, just tells you what has already happened. You could just automatically display that status text!

Yeah. Didn't have time to make a help section :(

Well, when a event happens, it might not be the only one : say you're attacked by three gobelins. This way you can go through the three messages, that's the use of Space.

There is indeed a "bug", more something I didn't have time to correct. So you'll have most of the time a empty first message (that's why it doesn't show anything at first).

Thanks for commenting ! I know where I have to correct things now :)

Haha, it was quite odd getting the ice armour right at the start. Health never dropped. Anyway, nice prototype, it's enjoyable.

I think that I ran into the bug where my health never went down as well. I just needed to reload the game a few times and then it was smooth sailing through every level. Cool roguelike though, I don't have a ton of experience with the genre outside of desktop dungeons, but this seems like the way I expect a rogue like to work :)

Definitely needs a bit more polish. In game key-bindings list and such. One big thing is that attacking does not update your health (I don't think) so if you're duking it our with a troll and getting hit, say, you don't know what your health actually is until you wait of move.
Also, I managed to reach a blank map when I was around level 5.

Yeah, i runned out of "polish time", sorry about that.

i think pressing A to attack isn't necessary. more intuitive is to just press in the direction of enemy. pretty complex game for 48h. good job! :)

Thanks !
Yeah, I should definitively do that. Don't know why I didn't, actually !

Quite nice! I often seemed to die suddenly, even when I thought I still had enough HP left.
The controls are a bad weird (having played Nethack I expected running into monster to work as attacking).
Still, very good entry.

I seem to get stuck in the popups if I go to equip anything and can't continue the game.

Just to be sure, you have to press the same key again to close it, after having opened it (and maybe equipped something).
If it's another problem, I have no idea what it is :(
